Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

Given the extensive spell list of the original FFVII, I have to wonder if they'll pause the action when you enter the Magic or Summon menus. Would make it more like a Western RPG in that case (or a Tales of game, for that matter).

There's like no backlash in here. Don't tell me I'm the only one incredibly pissed about this?

Modders, does it look possible to mod this back to ATB if it gets a PC release?

Trust me, you're not the only one. I'm probably not as pissed as you, as I had a sinking feeling that it would turn out this way and kept my expectations in check. It's a AAA game so you have to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Looks cool overall. I think I'll enjoy this. Quick thoughts

- Battle system looks like FFXIII with multi-character control. I'm happy about this because the battle system was the main thing XIII had going for it. Combine that with meaningful leveling and customisation options and you've got a meaty, fun game.

- Voice acting stands out as weak. Barrett, especially, sounds bored. I figure this might be just them dubbing over the trailer rather than having an English voice cast set yet because the lip syncing is totally wrong. Hopefully they sort out a decent cast.

- Graphics and style seem pretty spot on. Midgar looks cool! Barrett looks a little skinny, is all! That fella had some beef to him in my memory.

So yeah. Looks like everything is progressing nicely.

If any of you guys think that silly scenes can't be recreated properly with realistic graphics, go play some Yakuza 5 when it comes out next week.

Japanese are masters with that stuff.

The fact that people who play turn based games exclusively think that they are smarter and more refined then everyone else is incredibly tiring.

If a demo is released along FFXV, it'll be this exact scenario. I'm curious about the battle system and how it'll control. I do wonder how the battle with the Guard Scorpion will play since it scans for your position and its attack depended on you attacking while its tail was up.

You mean the game that is getting released digital only and years late?

Square wants to sell to an audience a little bigger than yakuza. :p

I'm curious what people expected, especially after the comments made about them not wanting to make a pretty version of the same game, which to be fair is implied when you think of a "remake". I'm impressed so far with what I've seen, I hope it plays as good as it looks.

Looks amazing. Didn't expect it to be so far along either. Glad they dropped the original combat. If they were going to do turn based again they should have completely revamped it either way. An updated prettier version of the same game would have been boring

Um, not really? Action games and action RPGs sell much more than turn based RPGs. To most people (ie the entire gaming audience) games where you have to sit around and wait for things are very boring.

Just because you enjoy slower paced combat (I do as well), it doesn't make us not a small minority.

That would make sense if S-E's top sellers weren't all ATB or even slower turn based equivalents. "Traditional" FF or DQ games universally outsell SE's ARPG series, but if they want to chase a different demographic, I guess we'll see.

edit: What are people seeing, exactly, where this is reminding them in any way of FF13? FF13 is turn based, are you getting confused by the UI presentation or the spell/particle effects? Based on what we just saw, this will play nothing like FF13.

Final Fantasy 7 wasn't exactly Jagged Alliance or Alpha Centauri. Despite being turn-based, it was in fact aimed at the lowest common demoninator, what with all the spectacle of things like minute-long summoning cutscenes.

You're asking hobbyists not on a salary to virtually rewrite large swathes of the game, then QA all the cases that a turn-based system might break the game (e.g. if anything needed you to physically move to a specific position in whatevs. encounter) and then rebalance the entire game.

Without access to the source code.

That looked great but I'm so tired of waiting for these games. Is that Luminous or UE4? Looks quite a bit like XV. Maybe I need to watch the trailer again.

I hope they offer some camera angle options/control, maybe even an "isometric"-ish option so that you can view the glorious environments FFVII-style. (I understand that last thing may not be feasible, but I can dream)

Guess playing turn based makes you superior huh?

This being reflex based is going to ruin the sheer amount of options you had in battle with materia. It hasn't worked in any KH game and it sure as hell won't work here.

UGHJHHHHH

Doesn't look too bad actually. Why are people complaining about the combat? Its been known for a while. Small nit pick but I really hate the whole shimmy/crawling through environments that action games have. Always felt like it just slowed down the pacing instead of being immersive. At least theres no apparent qte to do so.

The fact that people who play turn based games exclusively think that they are smarter and more refined then everyone else is incredibly tiring.

No person who likes or enjoys turn-based gaming has ever said anything remotely implying what you believe to any level of repetitiveness that would make it "tiring"

I don't see how they are related.

Just saying that Y5 has some crazy stuff and it translates very well to realistic art style too.

Cloud running around with that huge ass sword on his back looks SO DUMB.

This game is going to be ready in 2025... do yall remember how large this game is? It's going to take forever.

My take: this game still isn't real until a release date.

But MAN that combat UI is sooo clean. Makes me wish Xenoblade X could copy that.
