Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Chunk 1 (CyberConnect2, UE4) Trailer, "PS4 Console Debut"

If FFVII were made today, it would look and play exactly like what we're getting. Modern production design and gameplay.

Really pleased with how this is going.

Well, FFVII is being made today, in a market that doesn't support turn based games. lol

And what is more "modern" about real time games, or what isn't "modern" about turn based games? what does that even mean?

I don't get this complaint. The entire Midgar sequence is a cinematic, linear affair in the original game. Come on, now.

Yeah I feel people who say that haven't played VII yet, the first half of disc 1 is 100% linear. And Midgar is just a bunch of corridors, essentially.

Again, there is a multitude of turn-based RPGs being released today. There is nothing that makes action based more modern than turn-based (or ATB). It's just a different style.

It looks beautiful but I hope it won't be too action .. so far not a big fan of the VOs but I expected this. I didn't expect the combat to be that different though .. I'm really skeptical but I'll have to play it to know if I like it I guess. I loved Resident Evil 1 remake because it was gorgeous but faithful to the original. Imagine if they would've put a fix camera behind his back, you start with a machine gun with unlimited amo and you can run .. it would suck!! That's what I'm afraid here .. a change of focus can make things worst.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
I love, love, love the small details... Barret is the only person who isn't affected by the explosion. He simply don't give a fuck

Holy SHIT that way exceeded my sky high expectations for a long anticipated remake of my favorite RPG.

Hnnnggggg

Dat frame rate though

I know it's way early to bitch about framerate I'm surprised it's at a 'playable' fps so far and looks so good

digital foundry drop inbound

Hopefully its not another cinematic hallway simulator with the VII brand. Im confident with Nomura, but that Uncharted stuff worries me.

Hopefully it still has full towns and feels like an RPG.

Any hope that the world map will look something like this? The high-end graphics make me fear the world map will be greatly restricted, like FFX.

Damn...Development looks further along than I expected, lol.

That said, I'm pleased with what I see. It's exactly how I imagined the Remake would look like.

That's exactly what I mean. Modern audiences are playing real-time RPGs and action games, and they would expect that kind of gameplay in a big mainstream title like this.

People need to understand the era that this is being made in. It's not about dragging the past into the present, it's about making a game in the present, informed by the past.

Don't worry, there will be towns. You just can't cut out 95% of the game and say it's a remake.

I'm calling KH3 including the demo.

I'm thinking they'll add it to a game they want to sell that might struggle on it's own. KH3 will do amazing on its own.

Soooo... Dissidia PS4? ;)
It would be poetic with the original VII demo releasing with a fighting game back in '96.

Looks amazing, still worried they might water it down and take out a lot of content though. FF7 was absolutely enormous and had a lot of side content with a huge world map. How will they cram that into a high def game?

YO IMAGINE IF THEY'RE DONE WITH THE ENTIRE MIDGAR (PART 1) STORY ARC.

IS THE DEVELOPMENT WORKING ON CALM RIGHT NOW?

IMAGINE FUCKING CALM

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING

I think it's fair to say for this specific instance (FFVII remake), there is some leeway to be given to individuals who have been campaigning for 15+ years to be able to be upset about it if it doesn't match their hopes.

There is a significant amount of emotional investment in this particular game and the demand for a remake. There is scant a similar case for this in the video game industry where fans have been asking for this for so long.

Just telling those people who have been invested for that long to just play the same game they've had isn't good enough.
The first trailer was a warning to expect the same stuff. As much of a fan as I am of classic jrpg's that were turn based, they are a dead attraction these days. The last time I was relevant for me was Lost Odyssey and even that became monotonous to me. Final Fantasy XIII kept me more invested in the way it handled its system. Pure turn based strategy has become a niche field. To expect Nomura of all people o be the one o bring it back was truly not reality.

It sucks for the purist who wanted the straight up turn based gameplay, but they are definitely a minority at this point. Either we embrace this change or just let it go. It's ok regardless.

why is turn based "the past"

turn based games are still releasing

you might as well be saying "profitable" and "unprofitable" instead of "present" and "past" because that's what you seem to be wanting to say

It might be just my imagination, but it looks like there have been subtle changes to Cloud's face here to make him look slightly more gaunt and Sephiroth-esque,as per the stuff with
his relation to the Sephiroth clones at this point.
That is if I'm remembering correctly; if I'm not, playing this will be a good refresher.

It's turn-based combat. How old it is doesn't make it worse. The Persona and SMT games are doing just fine with turn-based combat.

On a positive note, I will say that they really nailed the characters and tone. It really looks great. It just makes the combat change even more painful.

Going by this thread, Persona,SMT and Dragon Quest better get with the times.

It's funny for me that a few years ago, the possibilities for a FF VII Remake Were almost none, and now here we are watching gameplay.
I guess it is time for us to start demanding the Remake of Parasite Eve and Chrono Trigger imo.

Oh yes. Hell yes.

Inject it into my veins. I mean, once they said they were changing the battle system I knew we were getting that brand of ARPG I fucking despise but at this point the fact the game is real, looks polished and looks far along is all I really care about. I'll take it for what it is.

Its not going to look like Xenoblade, cause FF7 aint an open world. The world map is just a linear 3D area to take you to other towns and specific places.

I won't bring it up in threads not related to the combat, just let me vent a bit in this one though :p

Honestly if it turns out great, then that's great. But I've not really enjoyed a FF game since FFX, in large part because of the shift in combat that has happened.

He definitely has a sickly look, and I can't help but feel that's on purpose considering what we know of his past.

It always surprises me how the first part of the world you're introduced in is the most largest and expansive of all.
Edit: Whoops, mistook Midgar for the world itself somehow. But still, it's fairly linear after entering Mythril Caves.

Those gifs really make it seem like either:

A) Each attack is depleting the ATB looking bar.

B) Each attack fills the bar until it goes into cooldown.

Camera cinematically following attacks looks like it would be really irritating if you were controlling his movement as well.

Not adoring Barret's sunglasses nor his (presumably) default weapon. Why would they change his look so much, but keep Cloud the same?

I think the world map will be extremely similar in feel to FFXV. After this trailer, FFVIIr is looking more like a total-conversion mod of FFXV.

Rewatching the trailer, I just love how they captured the character of Cloud from the original so well. He definitely looks like he's motivated and ready to kick some ass while still haveing some of the "indifferent" character trait that I remember from the last playthrough.
