Looks awesome. I was actually hoping they kept the old battle system but I liked what I saw today. I just wish they'd stop showing "play it first on playstation" and tell us what all systems it will be released for haha. The audio was excellent as well.
Can't wait to see Sephiroth :)

FFVII is my favourite game, ever. And I'm also looking forward to the Remake more than any other game, battle system changes and all.
Good times to be a jrpg fan :D

Look if you're a wanted terrorist and you're moseying in full-tilt to a government-owned infrastructure installation, wouldn't you want a disguise too? The shades help conceal his identity. SHINRA would be on a lookout with a giant man with a gun arm that WASN'T wearing shades.

I admit I laughed. I like his overall design except the sunglasses. Way better than his advent children shit. His original art is my fav though.

I really don't get why people are ditching hope on the game from either side of the fence all over the battle system. I mean the battle system for the original worked, but it wasn't by any means the meat of the experience despite it being where you spend most of your time. The best part of FF7's combat was the materia system which could still be in place. There were RTB JRPG's releasing alongside these games too and they had combat systems that were just fine too IMO so I can't see it being too much of an issue.

My point is, wasn't the main focus of the remake to be reliving that story in a perspective we could have never dreamed of back when it came out? Getting to see everything realized on a scale that makes the locations feel like more than a few handpicked renders? We're still getting to do that.

It does suck that turn based combat is rare these days but is it really worth throwing away any hope of the game over?

Seriously, the battle system back then was serviceable, but it's not the type of thing you would play on its own if it had no story(it mostly served as a progression blocker; see also: grinding). Now it could stand to ALSO be a lot of fun to play in and of itself, not just as something you do so you can see more story.

That was pretty fucking incredible.

I somehow have trouble imagining them pulling off the entirety of FFVII (it is a long game) with this kind of attention to detail. It seems more believable if the game were only the Midgar portion, but everything? This could be a long way off.

Disagree. If ones more faithful to the original it's a much better look.

I'm finding it odd that if you like Cloud you would prefer the model that looks less like him.

Dissidia cloud design is garbage tbh
Not only does that have nothing to do with what you were responding to but I'm also talking about Dissidia Arcade, not Dissidia.

I love that some of the dialog is identical to the original game. I'm sure we'll get some callbacks to the terrible original translation too lol

Looks good. I think the character models can use some work (something seems off with Cloud's hair) to me, but this is going to be a fun game to play.

Man it's more progress than I expected at this point. Maybe they'll pull it off.

I wonder what they will do about the world map.

Not angry about the change but I also can't see the entirety of the materia being relevant in the new system. Materia is pretty important to the story.

FF7 diehards being pissed it's not turn based is puzzling. It's not like the original combat system was some amazing thing. You sit there and wait for a meter to fill and then you hit x. Wow. Then you sit there and wait while the enemy walks up to you and attacks. Scintillating combat.

Honestly, if you want the exact same game that looks better, get the PC version and use mods.

This is a remake. Things should change. Things should be updated.
I've never wanted a remake but it's those same diehards that have been asking for one in in the first place and seeing as how the very best remakes include Resident Evil, Zero Mission, DQ, FF IV, etc all manage to successfully update their sources faithfully without fucking with the formula, there's no reason why this couldn't have followed suit.

Such nonsense. It is possible to like two things at once, you know.

I never said that it wasn't.

But the remake is not targeted to people who enjoyed the vast majority of the gameplay of FFVII. It's targeted at a new audience, who do not want to play a game like the original. Square Enix would not have changed the combat if they thought they'd make more money otherwise.

TBH, I'm glad this design moved away from the original a bit. The doll face he has in Dissidia and Smash would look out of place here, IMO.

That isn't wrong, though. If you liked turn based combat, then this game isn't for you. If you liked FF7 in its original form, this game isn't for you.

What...? I love turn based combat, but that doesn't mean I dislike real-time combat. And I absolutely ADORE FFVII, and this remake has me hyped beyond belief. What do you mean...?

Whoa wasn't expecting this.

Was prepared to be dissappointed by the lack of turn based combat but I have to admit it still looked pretty fucking good. As long as we can still control multiple characters it'll be alright I guess. Didn't expect it to be so far along.

It's been a while since I played it but who is Jessie, i don't remember her, and wasn't Tifa in the beginning in the original?

Or it's targeted at lifelong fans of the original who are flexible and recognize that not everything is going to be exactly like it was in 1997. That's where my feelings are at, anyway.

I'd disagree. Speaking specifically about the artstyle, I don't like how Cloud's hairstyle is the one from Advent Children and not the original, not to mention the colours are more muted. Cloud's original outfit had a purple that, while not bright, wasn't as subdued as the current one.

what a stupid thing to say. people love the original for a reason, including the battle system.

as usual, those fine with the changes didn't care for VII, which whatever, you do you - but don't act as if that's the correct stance on remaking a game that is beloved for what it was originally.
You might not want to speak on others behalf. I played the original FFVII as soon as we got it on Christmas Eve (which was about a month after its release in Europe) and replayed the game about a thousand times when I was a kid. I loved the game. I just don't think its brand of turn-based combat has aged all that well. It's still playable, but it's more of a hindrance with the slow-ish pace & millions of random battles than it is super-enjoyable & something I want to see replicated in a remake in 2017-2019. As such, I have absolutely no problems with them trying something completely different with a REMAKE'S battle system. I'm not so pathetically limited in my taste of JRPG combat systems that I'd resist change. If it's a good system, then it's a good system, regardless of how it is played, turn-based or real-time.

After seeing the battle system in action I'm checked out.

The wait for a remake of Final Fantasy VII starts anew.

For you, the wait for a remake of Final Fantasy VII is over.

Honestly, I think it looks great, and I'm a serious turn-based fan who is not easily impressed.

I guess the one thing that sticks out to me are the difference in faces.

Cloud's face doesn't look very anime-esque, then you look at the other, less important characters, and they do. I'm guessing it's because it's early, but it's weird.

This group isn't the only group that was asking.

Also the creators aren't just trying to appease fans, they are approaching this with their own vision of what they think this remake could be. They are all getting older, and want to do something new. They don't want to retread old ground. It's not like they made FF7 know it would blow up and knew exactly why people would love it. They just poured themselves into it at the time, and they are in a different place creatively, which much more and varied experiences to draw on.

Honestly you're points are devolving into shit posts at this point.

Agree with everything in this post including the fact that I didn't really want a remake but looking at the DQ remakes was exactly the kind I was expecting when this was announced.
