FFVII is going for a slightly more realistic look than either Smash or Dissidia, nothing wrong with that. You're going completely, ridiculously overboard with your criticism of FFVIIR Cloud's character design. You can think it's worse than Dissidia Cloud, that's your opinion, but to try to argue that it's some kind of travesty of a character design, that's just utterly ridonculous. It's a pretty faithful recreation of the original FFVII Cloud in a more realistic style. It looks good.

I love turn based RPG's as a genre and it's just dissappointing for me to see them basically disappear nowadays, or being replaced by ARPG combat. Pretty much all I have to look forward to now is Persona 5, a series I recently discovered. I don't hate ARPG gameplay, I like Kingdom Hearts 2 a lot, I just would have liked FFVII to still be turned based witha updated mechanics.

Turn based games have released after 1997 and still release today. There is nothing stopping square from releasing a faithful final fantasy 7 remake. But that wouldn't make enough money because not enough people like the original final fantasy 7, so they changed things so it would hit a larger audience.

The question is whether a turn-based title will have the same marketing power in 2015 as it did in 1997, when FFVII reached 10 million sold. I don't think there's any turn based title nowadays with those numbers aside from Pokémon.

realism and VII is the oxymoron that has plagued the game since Advent Children and precisely why I hate everything about the compilation.

The original game is RIDIC in all the best ways and what eases so much of that starts with the anime styling.

ATB was just a transition phase from total turn-based gameplay to real time, which couldn't be done well yet because of limitations in technology.

I think it's still possible to have strategic elements and things in real-time combat.

You're talking about the slums. Those are another area and they appear after the bombing operation.

It's hard to tell if the new combat will be fun or not from the footage. I see a bar that I assume is the ATB bar, so I'm hoping you still control your entire party, and this is at least still command-driven and not an action game with numbers. Controlling an action game with the left stick while selecting your actions with the dpad a la KH is uncomfortable and would really undermine the experience for me (still day 1 though).

No. I don't think the developers would have opted for direct character control in combat. They might have opted to have the visuals look like a dynamic action scene (rather than the enemies and heroes each standing in rows) while retaining the command-driven gameplay (which I think this might be doing).

I think it's still possible to have strategic elements and things in real-time combat.

Once again, there isn't one type of fan. As this thread is more than enough proof of. It is true the market has changed, and that they are reacting. But they are bring FF7 back because there are fans that have stuck with them. That are excited for XV and KH3. That have enjoyed there experimentation of gameplay.

The fact that the game takes design cues from AC and CC is also not them forgetting about core fans, but it's them remaining consistent to their own work within the franchise.

That's the thing though, there was zero indication turn-based died in the AAA space as far as marketability goes. It was a combination of external factors and not an actual sales decline like every other genre death in existence.

The only argument that could be made that people prefer action over turn-based is "they're more used to it now", which I'd also say is bullshit.

Secret of Mana existed 20 years ago and turn based games exist now. The genres are in no way dependent on technology, they're purely design choices.

Isn't this the upper layer though, where all the rich folk and high-class Shinra workers are? IIRC it was like that, pretty sleak, and way different than the slums which are as you describe.
