For whatever it's worth, I know a staunch Republican who was telling me that they plan on staying home and not voting if Trump or Carson is on the ballot.

People discounting Cruz's intelligence are morons, and are pretty much playing into his hands.
The dude is a fucking snake, but unlike Trump or Carson he's way more dangerous because he's doing all this intentionally to shake the anti-establishment tree a bit and solidify himself as the "head" of the tea party movement, and use that leverage to twist the government to his will and have more power in congress. Dude knows he doesn't stand a chance this time around in a general, but he doesn't really care. This is all just a power move to have leverage over the moderates in congress in the form of an axe that is the freedom caucus over anything that they want to pass so he has more leeway to shift legislation one way or the other to benefit him more.

I think so too, I don't take Trump seriously because he is nothing but a troll despite his horrible words directed at Mexicans, Cruz actually believes the disgusting shit he spews and his supporters are some of the most vile people this country has.

I heard conservative columnist David Brooks on PBS NewsHour talking about Ted Cruz last night and he's probably right. He said something like "Ted Cruz is universally unpopular. In the law firm, at school, when he worked for George W. Bush's campaign. Nobody likes him. If you're running an anti-Washington campaign the fact that everybody that's worked with hates you seems like a plus. The GOP has a problem. They don't want Trump but if the alternative is Cruz, they don't want that either."

Stuff like that only shows why he would get destroyed in the general. I'd be more scared of Trump and Carson beating Hillary than Cruz.
Difference being we'll be dealing with Cruz for the next 3 decades wrecking havoc in the senate while Carson and Trump are one and done laughs.
Cruz is incredibly insincere. He just knows if he talks like a slimeball preacher, some portion of the audience won't catch on.
His NPR interview with Steve Inskeep is a great example of this. Dodged every question. There's no possible way the guy believes what he's saying.

Not long ago Ted Cruz tweeted that Net Neutrality is "Obamacare for the Internet." There's an abundance of ignorance and intellectual incuriosity to unpack in those <140 characters.

Calling it the Obamacare of the Internet is a pretty smart attack actually. Most of his base doesn't know what Obamacare is but they hate it because reasons. Most of them don't know what Net Neutrality is, but comparing it to Obamacare will make them hate it because reasons.

Given that Cruz and Trump have the same kind of supporters, it just goes to show how far gone they are as a collective group.
Cruz is a very smart politician. He basically raised his own profile to the national stage and now fueling his presidential run by pissing off the GOP senate leadership and casting himself as an outsider despite having made his career in Washington/politics. So he is both incredibly smart and incredibly insincere.

Oh god, no, no. Trump's likeliness of winning is low. I won't say impossible, but it's low. Ted Cruz? I mean, it's still probably a loss. But it's less low. And also less entertaining. And realistically, Trump's terrible ideas plus lack of political experience isn't as scary to me as Ted Cruz's slightly better but still terrible ideas with actual political experience.

Cruz is way worse than Trump. Waaaay worse. It's like comparing Nixon to the Moral Majority (J Falwell, Pat Robertson, Pat Buchanan, Billy Graham, etc.). You know you're going to be dealing with assholes and sociopaths, but I'll take Nixon any day over the staunch religious nutjobs.
It's nothing like that. I would be ecstatic if Republicans today were like Nixon. We'd have universal healthcare, better environmental regulations, etc. Would be a much better world.

The problem I have with Cruz being that great and guileful manipulator is that he comes off as incredibly disingenuous (and almost derisive) when presenting his own positions and prospective policies. Most politicians are surrounded by that air of phoniness which maybe comes from repeating the same speech to so many receptive crowds that you start questioning the strength of your own belief. But the closest comparison I can think of for Cruz is Comedy Central era Stephen Colbert. He's always so close to break character, and what's underneath wouldn't be an exacerbated version freeing itself from the constraints of appearing at least somewhat "normal", it's a child and it just can't believe that anyone could fall for this and maybe even: that anyone could sincerely be like this and not hate themselves.
Nixon virtually hated all of that. He was forced to do a lot of things by a still liberal Congress in an environment before racists kicked the Democrats to the curb and, most importantly, before big business rolled the fuck over our political system. First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti
The republican party obviously wouldn't be as right if they were all mini Nixons, but I'd hold the phone on them all of a sudden adopting super liberal progressive legislations like that in the current environment where they are paid to obstruct and stand firm against any and all progress. Nixon was not an altruist.
Never said he was a super liberal progressive. But he was certainly more liberal then they are now, much more of a pragmatist, and much more interested in actually governing.
