It weirds me out how those that are on the Dark Side refer to it as the Dark Side. I watched episode 3 again for the first time since it hit theaters this weekend and seeing Palpatine keep saying dark side dark side dark side to Anakin to try and convince him to come over seems like something he should've worked on. It's a hell of a harder sell to tell someone to come over to the Dark Side than it is to tell someone to come to the interesting side or something differently that doesn't immediately sound you sold your soul to the devil or some shit.

They need to hire some consultants, they clearly have a messaging issue

The movie at multiple points makes you think Luke is walking the line towards the Dark Side (including having him dress in all black).

The Emperor tempts Luke towards the Dark Side by saying that Luke will be powerful enough to destroy the Emperor if he goes to the Dark Side. "Strike me down with all of your hate and your journey to the Dark Side will be complete"

From what I remember though what Luke wore in RoTJ was originally supposed to be the Jedi uniform.

I actually like Luke going boss-mode a bit in the early parts of the movie though, it makes him feel a lot more imposing and a more powerful and grown up person compared to where he was in Star Wars and Jedi. It also makes the moment near the end of the movie where he rejects the Dark Side a bit more satisfying.

What's the length of time between Empire and Jedi?

As a kid I assumed it was at least a couple years, since Luke is a straight up boss between Empire and Jedi, but after my rewatch last week I pieced together that: #1. Lando/Chewy immediately left Cloud City to start plans in motion to retrieve Han and #2. Luke doesn't see Yoda after his last scene with him in Empire until post-Jabba's Palace in RotJ. I mean, can we still assume a decent length of time passed?

It's the best part of the movie, for sure, the space battle is far too short to be anything substantial and the battle on Endor feels more like filler than anything else (mainly because Han and Leia are so wasted). The power play between the three men in the Throne Room is amazing and written so well.
 
Jabba the Hutt's reveal is so well done, he's genuinely terrifying and the puppet effect makes him look so real. Shame that that whole sequence gets ruined once they get to the Sarlaac Pit and things stop making sense lol.

The complaint about ROTJ that always makes me scratch my head is when people get upset and say that Ewoks beating Imperial Stormtroopers makes no sense, but then they turn around and say they want the Empire to build the Death Star shield generator on a planet of Wookies.

Emporer's throne room scenes are my favourite in the entire franchise but I'm not sure if VI is my favourite movie, probably goes to V for me.

I like everything that Johnson has done- not only from a script standpoint but from a visual standpoint He has a very strong sense of style and I think that's a great thing to have in a Star Wars movie. I feel the same about Abrams- the dude may ape Spielberg a bit much but there are worse directors to aspire to visually. Hell, I was even impressed with the episodes of Alias he directed and the Lost TV pilot was very strong visually as well.

In both cases I trust the directors as long as the script is there.

Trevorrow, meanwhile, is quite bland visually. I enjoyed JW well enough but I was constantly thinking that almost every setpiece would have been better with someone with a better command of the camera. So that concerns me with regards to Episode 9.

Campbell shoots good action consistently (including Vertical Limit IMO). Even Legend of Zorro was well shot even if it was poor in pretty much all other areas. So I would absolutely trust Campbell provided the script is good.

I kind of feel like Hamill always puts in good work and effort. I was watching some Wing Commander cinematics the other day and he was quite good in them even with the rest of the mid 90 FMV cheese.

I have successfully made it over a year without catching any spoilers. Shit is getting real close now.

I think for me I am excited for a new star wars, but keeping my expectations restrained at the same time.

Looking at the twitter reactions give me some hope that it is going to be good but honestly just having the old crew in it again is exciting enough.

Unless the movie is absolutely and universally terrible which I don't think it will be. Just go in and judge the movie for yourselves. I don't plan on reading any review because because they tend to reveal too many little tidbits imo

I think what keeps the prequel hate truly alive and intense is the fact that Lucas seemed to keep going back and making the original trilogy worse with each re-release. What Lucas did to the climax of ROTJ felt like it was almost spiteful. I think people would be more forgiving of the prequels (a little) if Lucas at least left the other movies alone.
