[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

It was sucking out the suns energy while the heroes were doing their thing. It's why it got dark right before Kylo killed Han.

I know that, but it already fired once -- how did it fire again from the same system?

Did it only drain half the star? Was it a multi-star system? Was it even in the same system or did it drain one star and move to another?

Kind of a shitty weapon, tbh, because you not only destroy the system you just obliterated, but also the one you are currently stationed in because now it has no star and all the system's planets will freeze/die. So it has to be mobile, but I guess I missed that/it wasn't stated.

And if it is mobile, how do you move something on a planetary scale? Do they have to suck up a star just to get enough energy to move to the next?

Starkiller Base is the main thing I straight-up dislike in the movie. They should've been more creative than "a BIGGER Death Star!"

I LOVED Adam Driver in this. He's a phenomenal actor to begin with. Funny all the people who didn't know him before this may not know that. Second, I thought his look was perfect. Very creepy when the mask came off. Goth-ish. Realistic. I could not be a bigger fan of the casting. And since we're being anecdotal, "everyone I know agrees."

My favorite scene in the movie was Rey force pulling and lighting up Luke's lightsaber. It's amazing the power that music has, as that is my favorite mostly because of the music.

I had shivers during that scene. It was definitely the music.

But he literally said the ship is easy to track and that it being online again made it traceable and that they have been looking for it for ages AND even went to Jakku but didn't find it.

Yeaaaaahhhhhh I know...

The whole 'Millenium Falcon on Jakku' just seemed too convenient a setup to introduce Han and Chewie for me, I guess, and it affected my perception of their intro...

guys

your only options re: political exposition are not just the boring ass exposition of the prequels or just explaining next to nothing like this movie

there is a middle ground

I don't really get what they didn't explain? This is episode VII it's not Star Wars: The Reboot the movie treats the audience like most of us have been here before.

What was with Kylo pounding his chest like a gorilla btw?

The man was bleeding heavily, losing tons of blood. He was shot in the side and had to not only stay conscious and on his feet but also engage in physical battle to the death.
He wasn't pounding "his chest" he was hitting himself in/near the wound where he was shot to stop the pain from numbing and using said pain to "wake himself up" and to "stay sharp" while losing tons of blood.

I sometimes feel people have very different ways of understanding movies.

Yeaaaaahhhhhh I know...

It's almost like the Force.....moves in mysterious ways.

DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNNN

J.J. Abrams fucking hates physics. Did you see the Star Trek films? Making sense isn't his thing.

guys

And the middle-ground still involves creating a situation in the movie where it makes sense for the characters to start talking politics. Much better to use the approach they had in this movie.

Can't believe I'm about to do this, buuut....

"1 - Age of the Republic. ANH: "A thousand generations" vs. AOTC: "a thousand years"

Current canon states that the original, core-world Republic and the Galactic Republic are not the same thing. The two together came to be considered "The Old Republic" by the time of ANH, but what was initially considered the Old Republic was created a thousand generations ago by the Core Worlds and only expanded out to encompass the galaxy following the implosion of the Sith and their retreat under the Banite rules 10000 years prior to TPM. The Galactic Republic was then established, but to later people it seemed like a continuation, in the same way that the reconstituted Byzantine Empire under the Palaiologues could be seen as the same or a separate state.

2 - AOTC/ROTS: All stormtroopers are clones of Jango Fett. OT: they have different heights and different voices... none of them sound like Temura Morrison.
Clonetroopers are clones of Jango Fett. Stormtroopers are recruits, with only a few clones.

3 - Size of the Clone Army. AOTC: States 1.2 million "units." By the OT, how can there be enough Stormtroopers to patrol the Galaxy if it takes 10 years to grow them and they age at 2x the normal rate?
Clonetroopers were grown, Stormtroopers are recruited with high enlistment rates as a jobs creation program.

4 - How can Leia remember her real mother (ROTJ), if not only was she born AFTER her twin Luke (ROTS), but Padme died in childbirth?
She remembers it through the Force and has seen Force visions of Padme (see the Princess Leia comic). For whatever reason, Luke is more connected to his father.

5 - When did Obi-Wan Kenobi serve Bail Organa during the Clone Wars? (ANH)

The Clone Wars movie.

6 - Design of the Tantive IV (name not stated in movie, but Captain Antilles's ship), how does it change so radically in 20 years? (ROTS vs. ANH)

The ship in RotS isn't the Tantive IV, it's the Sundered Heart.

7 - Why doesn't R2D2 remember the past 20 years?
He does, he just doesn't say anything to Luke about Yoda.

8 - Why did Ben Kenobi forget about Leia (ESB vs. ROTS)?
He...didn't? He just didn't consider her the one who would be able to restore Vader. If there's a problem here it's due to Leia being retconned into Luke's sister in RotJ, since she wasn't originally his sister in ESB when he tells Yoda that Luke was their last hope. The "other" was supposed to be Luke's sister Nellith who would come in during the next trilogy.

9 - When did Anakin demonstrate that he was "already a great pilot" when Obi-Wan "first knew him"? (ROTJ vs. TPM)
The pod race and the Battle of Naboo.

10 - When did Owen show any disagreement with Anakin, to the extent described by Obi-Wan? (ANH vs. AOTC/ROTS)
Obi-Wan was lying to Luke to get him on his side.

11 - Why does Yoda say that Jedi never use the Force for attack, but only 'knowledge and defense', and why does he disparage war/warriors? (ESB vs. AOTC/ROTS)
He reflected on the follies of the Clone Wars. He grows as a character, having been blinded by Jedi dogma during the PT and having learned under Qui-Gon's tutelage what it means to be a true Jedi.

12 - Why was Luke "hidden" on Anakin's home planet, at the homestead of the family his mother married into and his last name not changed? (ROTS vs. ANH)
The last name thing has been an issue since ESB/RotJ, so that's not a prequel problem. Anyway, Vader hates Tatooine and never wanted to go back. Palpatine specifically sends him as a punishment in the current Star Wars comics.

13 - Why doesn't Chewie react to Han Solo's bad-mouthing of the Jedi and the Force? (ANH vs. ROTS)
You have one so far.

14 - Why doesn't R2D2 ever use his rocket boosters again? (AOTC/ROTS)
He didn't need to. The old EU said they broke down.

15 - Why did the first Death Star take twenty years to build, while the second, larger and more powerful station, was built in 1-3 years? (ROTS vs. ROTJ)
First one had design problems and was never attempted before, supply lines kept getting sabotaged by rebels like Berch Teller (see the Tarkin novel). The second Death Star was already being constructed by the time of ANH (see the Marvel Star Wars comic).

16 - When was it shown that Anakin was a "good man" and a "good friend" before he turned to the Dark Side? (ROTS vs. ANH/ROTJ)
TCW.

17 - Why did Obi-Wan refer to Yoda as "The Jedi Master who instructed me" when he was instructed by Qui Gon Jinn? (TPM vs. ESB)
Yoda instructs all younglings.

18 - Why does Yoda moan about Luke being "too old to begin the training" when Obi-Wan had no problem with it, and supposedly Yoda thought 9 year old Anakin was "too old"? (TPM vs. ANH/ESB)
Because Luke was too old going by the traditional Jedi standards and Obi-Wan just spent 20 years watching the kid and wasn't about to just give up because Yoda said no.

19 - What happened to Jar Jar Binks?
Does it matter?

20 - (Special Editions) Why does anyone on Tatooine care when the Empire falls?
The Empire was increasingly encroaching on Tatooine. We already see this with the Stormtrooper patrols in ANH, and deleted scenes from ANH have Biggs warning Luke that the Empire is nationalizing farms and could come for the Lars homestead next. Also the Star Wars comics have Vader putting Jabba in his place.

21 - Why does Obi-Wan wear his Jedi uniform "in hiding" on Tatooine? (ANH vs. TPM/AOTC/ROTS)
It blends well with what the locals already wear. This has been a problem since RotJ, isn't a prequel issue.

22 - What happened to all the battle droids?
They're around, see all the new canon books and comics.

23 - Why isn't Luke able to stop the Emperor's lightning attack and why doesn't Yoda at least show him how to counter it? (ROTJ vs. AOTC/ROTS)
If you're talking about Yoda doing the Force block thing with his hands, Luke was caught offguard.

24 - If there are only always ever two Sith "no more, no less... a master and an apprentice" (TPM) why does Vader recommend that Luke could be turned into a "powerful ally" and the Emperor agrees he would be a "great asset"? (TPM vs. ESB)
The Sith use dark side acolytes as attack dogs without training them to be full Sith, see the Inquisitors in Rebels. Either way, they're both lying to each other and want Luke as their apprentice.

25 - Why do Obi-Wan, Anakin, Owen and Beru appear so old if only 18-20 years have past since we last saw them? (ANH/ROTJ vs. ROTS)
Twin suns.

26 - Why doesn't Admiral Motti seem aware of the reality of the Force and the power of those who wield it? (PT vs. ANH)
He's aware of it, he just thinks it's a stupid religion. Force users are rare in the galaxy, which as trillions and trillions of beings in it. Imperial propaganda against the Jedi relegates them to terrorists who believed in a strange religion. This isn't unusual and we can see how fast propaganda spreads in the real world.

27 - What happened to the Imperial military in those two decades that they lost nearly all their hardware and technology? (ROTS vs. OT)
It's symbolic of the Empire focusing on brute force and functionalism vs. aesthetics and refinement. Remember, the PT is a "more civilized age". They're trying to pump out a huge military, not the most technologically perfect one.

28 - Why doesn't Obi-Wan recognize the droids? (ANH vs. PT)
Who says he doesn't? All he ever says is that he doesn't remember "owning a droid"

29 - Why doesn't Owen Lars recognize the droids? (ANH vs. AOTC)
Why would he? Do you remember every tool you ever owned? He doesn't think of droids as individuals, just things.

30 - Why don't Luke or Leia ever find out that R2D2 knows everything about their past?
They never asked.

31 - Why doesn't Qui Gon Jinn appear as a spirit at the end of ROTJ? (see AOTC/ROTS)
Why would he? Luke has no idea who he is. Also TCW confirmed that Qui-Gon died before his training was complete so he can only show up as a voice, not a spectral form, unless he's on some crazy Force nexus place like Mortis.

32 - If one has to be "trained" to become a spirit after death, when did Anakin ever learn it? (ROTS vs. ROTJ)
Dave Filioni said that Lucas told him the answer but that he does not want to share it (yet). Most likely it's because he's the Chosen One and the idea was planted in his head on Mortis.

33 - When did Anakin express the desire for his son to have his lightsaber when he was "old enough" (and if the Jedi are trained from birth, does that mean as a toddler? but since the Jedi aren't allowed to have children... then what?)?
Obi-Wan was lying.

34 - How many Wars were there? Why does Yoda refer to it as "the Clone War" instead of the "Clone WarS" (plural)? (AOTC vs. ANH)
Semantics.

35 - Why does Ben refer to Vader as "Darth" if that is a Sith title rather than a personal name? (see ANH)
Because Lucas hadn't formalized the idea of Darth as a title yet.

36 - Was Vader really "but the learner" when he "left" Obi-Wan? (ANH vs. ROTS)
He was not a Master, but a Knight, so he was still under Obi-Wan's rank. The last time he speaks with Obi-Wan on good terms he even tells him "I've been a terrible apprentice."

37 - Did Obi-Wan really stop going by that name (and start going by the name "Ben") "before" Luke was born? (ANH vs. ROTS)"
Source: http://www.chefelf.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6454
Semantics.

Look, I just want to know more about these characters and the worlds the Rebellion freed before they get killed/blown up in Episodes VIII and IX. Them not doing much for decades and then dying feels anti-climactic.

Sure, the Republic was boring in the prequels, but seeing them early on in TFA would've added value to them when they got blown up. Instead, they're just kind of there.
The Republic could have been explained a bit better, but how do you do that within the context of people living in the Republic? How do you bring it into the conversation?

That Aryan guy at the First Order rally managed to get a bit in, though.

Anyway, what we've got going on is a conflict of expectations. Hardcore Star Wars fanboys had dozens of novels and encyclopedias written after the fact to fill in all the gaps in the OT for them. The PT was written with those expectations in mind, explaining everything. Now we have a return to the OT's style of leaving everything out.

Don't agree with this analysis, but I sure hope Driver grows out some facial hair for the sequel and Ren returns a lot more sure of himself, the left pic looks good.

So does Star Wars.

It was an okay fit.
Not to such an extreme. Absorbing the sun you are orbiting? Really? I couldn't suspend my disbelief on that one. It's just too huge.

All I know is Anakin needs to pay a force ghost visit to Kylo and tell his grandson to calm the fuck down with this dark side shit
I think that is exactly what the draw to the light side Kylo feels is, but Snoke has his mind on lock.

The lightsaber should have flown out of Rey's hand as a closer.

I would laugh if the beginning of the next movie shows Luke and Rey still standing towards each other with Rey's lightsaber in hand still stretched out. Then Rey goes like "ok seriously, would you take the lightsaber already? I've been standing here like this for at least a few minutes now."

As for what Rey’s dream sequence doesn’t reveal … Abrams and Kasdan said they knew they had to suggest her backstory, but everyone felt The Force Awakens would be the wrong place to dive too deeply into Rey’s past. “We’re hoping Rian Johnson can figure that out,” Kasdan joked. “We were really stymied!”

Every time I read more of these admissions from the writing team it just makes me disheartened. These guys have no idea what they're doing with the story. It feels like Battlestar Galactica all over again.

I said contradictions, which is exactly what they are. And errors. Idiotic bits like Anakin building C3PO are retcons.
I think we'd better stop now, since you must be tired from all the mental gymnastics.
That's not a retcon at all, it was never explained how C3PO was created

Watching han solo die was the most predictable boring crap I've seen in years.

It was predictable yes. Anyone that fallows Star Wars knew that if solo was in this movie he was a goner.

However to have his kid ( confused by the light and dark side ) cut him down wasn't something I saw coming. I really think it's a good way to give kylo some real hatred

I thought and think Kylo Ren is perfectly cast. He is obviously power hungry and a fan of the sith lore. He has his own style and he is still young in this movie.

The one on the left was literally created in this movie. He even has a scar across his face now.

I love his current appearance. It's a lovely fuck you to the "cool badass dude" look most villains get.

I don't really get what they didn't explain? This is episode VII it's not Star Wars: The Reboot the movie treats the audience like most of us have been here before.

Who is the first order? How big are they? Are they a small group of insurgents who only occupy Starkiller base or are they an actual government and controls planets?

Who is the Republic? How big are they? Do they control the entire galaxy like the old republic/empire or just that one solar system we see destroyed? Why should we care about them? What is their relationship with the Resistance?

These are basic questions that should have been answered and could have been answered without resorting to talk about trade federations.

I love his current appearance. It's a lovely fuck you to the "cool badass dude" look most villains get.

Definitely true. The fact that we and everyone else is talking so much about him shows he already has more depth then any other villain so far. And it means there's room for him to grow into something else going forward.

Not to such an extreme. Absorbing the sun you are orbiting? Really? I couldn't suspend my disbelief on that one. It's just too huge.
Its more realistic to absorb energy from a neighboring Star than it is to stop photons of light exactly 36 inches from an emitter AND make them solid in a 1 inch diameter.

Lightsaber physics beats energy absorption by a million light years.

I disagree because none of those questions have any impact on the story that was told.
Everything you see in the movie can happen the same way whether you know the First Order has 1000 or 1 million Storm Troopers or if the Republic is the entire galaxy or 5 star systems.

It really, REALLY, doesn't impact anything and would be completely useless, padding exposition for the sake of exposition when these kind of only hardcore fan important details can be delivered much better in other material like novels and such.

Everyone saying Solo dying predictable: even though I knew the minute he stepped onto that corridor what was going to happen it did not lessen the emotional impact that it had. I figured Solo would die, but I DID NOT expect his own son to slay him like that. The whole scene carried a feel of tragedy that sucked the oxygen out of the room, and even though I've never been a big Star Wars guy I could feel my heart pumping a bit harder after Kylo finally crossed that point of no return.

I disagree because none of those questions have any impact on the story that was told.

They sure as hell do. Context gives weight to actions. I had no reason to care about the 5-destroyed planets because there was no context given to them, and as such, I didn't give much of a shit of whether the protagonist's succeeded or failed in destroying Death Star v3.

Fake Edit: Although there are several reasons for me feeling that way, but the lack of context absolutely hurt the narrative imo.

Exactly. Is a childish expectation to be honest.

Sadly we have been conditioned to want this

Alright, let's quickly play your "why should I care?" game:

We saw one scene. That scene was in a very large looking city. Probably (by our real world estimates) a city with a couple million people in it,right? And we saw a quick glimpse that showed us "yeah hey there are people here this isn't an empty planet or something". Now, since from your point of view we need to be told or shown things, we will say for the sake of argument that only that city we saw with those people existed. The other planets were all empty.

So the First Order just wiped out a couple million people with one shot. Just like that. Innocent people who had no role in this conflict.
Again, millions of people dead in the blink of an eye.

And you ask "Why should I care?"

You can't see how stopping them from maybe, I don't know, killing some more people could be a thing to root for the protagonists for?

Like, how is this a point of discussion? Why do I even need to fucking write "basic empathy moron" in a post?????

No, the scene where the republic is destroyed would have been so much more meaningful if they actually explained who the republic is and what is going on.

It's the difference between someone making a movie where Switzerland gets destroyed vs a movie where Europe gets destroyed. They are obviously both tragedies but so much more is known by adding context.

on one side you have Star Wars fans who idolized Vader and want everything to be dark and brooding and evil and covered with scars

on the other side you have Star Wars fans who want good movies
