[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

The scene that annoyed me the most is how the heck Rey knows about Jedi Mind Trick all of a sudden when 30 min ago in the movie she was thinking Jedi's were a myth. And now she knows Jedi mind trick? Made no sense to me.

IMO it was the scene when Ren tried to enter her mind. I think it "awoken" something inside of her especially when she "fought" back against him in that scene. I'll be the first to admit it's a bit convenient but I have some theories.

So let down with Kylo. Was expecting a beast, and I kinda blame Disney for setting him up that way in the trailers. Hard for me to take him seriously now. All those awesome promo shots of him in the woods...All gone now knowing he's gonna start pouting at any moment.

She probably heard stories about the Jedi using mind tricks - now that she knows The Force is real why not try it?

It can be explained by the fact that when Kylo Ren penetrated her mind, she was able to push him out. So she knew it was possible to mess with people's head.

I thought the actual scene of her using it on the Stormtrooper was less than good though. I think she should've just been able to do it right away. The "third times a charm" thing was silly.

:(

I really hate everything about the starkiller base. If it were just a large death star then ok its uninspired, but nothing else about it makes a lick of sense, even within the star wars universe. Sipping up suns? Being able to see it from a solar system away on the ground? No one saw that shit getting made? How would it where 5 beams made from a sun go so accurately? Whats the point of even shooting sun beams, once you destroy a sun, the solar system is dead anyway. The death star worked cuz it was just 'a big laser base station' there was nothing complicated about it, the audience will give you a buy on that. A travelling sun destroying planet beam maker? Come on man.

Well one weakness of the Death Star is that it had to be pretty close to the planet they wanted to destroy. This new base being able to target planets in another solar system is several magnitudes more dangerous. They aren't destroying the star of the solar system they are targetting.

I had to google what a Mary Sue actually was.
Some fan fiction shit that's what.

lol

I wish I was a child again and didn't see this nitpicking shit!

Because it's something that Jedis did and was widely known? At that point she knew all the Jedi legends were true because Han Solo told her so and because she had just found out she was strong with the force.

Knowing all of this, she gave it a chance and after a couple attempts it worked out.

[edit]

In Episode I Watto knows about Jedi mind tricks and so does Jabba the Hutt in episode 6. It's not like it's a secret.

Was really wishing the Jedi Temple they went back to @ the end was the one from KOTOR. Have no clue about relevant lore.

So you don't take him seriously because he shows a bit of emotion and conflict?

I really hope Kylo Ren ends up failing to live up to Vader until the end of the new trilogy. It would be great to see him think he's finally lived up to his idol by killing off Snoke and becoming the leader of The New Order while we know he's still a failure.

I wonder what Snoke really looks like. I refuse to believe that CGI mess is what he really looks like, but rather it's just something he uses for intimidation.

His name is Bail Organa though.

HAN SOLO steps out onto the catwalk. Breathes deeply. Exhales. Steels himself.

HAN
Bail!

KYLO REN immediately dives off the side of the catwalk and falls to his doom 3000 feet below. HAN slaps his hands together and allows a satisfied grin to crease his face.

HAN
I love it when a plan comes together

CHEWIE roars from his position above Han.

HAN
Boy, you said it Chewie

The whole scene with the reveal of the Millenium Falcon was just 11 year old giddiness bubbling over the surface.

Yup...probably the second biggest* heart-tug in the film for me, since Han & Chewie boarding the Falcon was spoiled by the trailer (that scene had pacing problems in the film anyway). I didn't at all guess the Falcon was the "garbage" ship Rey was referring to, so it was perfect when they panned over. In retrospect, you'd think the junk dealer wouldn't just keep the landing plank open for anyone to steal his ship though.

* Biggest heart-tug was Han and Leia seeing each other again. Though I found it a bit cynical of Abrams to write them off as separated/divorced.

CALLING IT NOW

Captain Phasma is actually 'Snoke'.

Interesting theory, but I can't imagine Abrams would've cast GoT's Gwendoline Christie as Phasma without eventually revealing her face.

I'll cool it on the "Rey is OP and had no training whatsoever." because they probably spread it across a couple more movies

but one of the best movies this year is about a character that needed training

the training scenes are the best part

are there any good books/other content that is connected with the new movie yet that's worth looking into? I'm interested in finding out more about TFA story and universe that's being set up.

Just came across really weak and corny? Runs around wearing a mask because he wants to be darth vader and gets cry baby when he can't? If he's a master knight, he shoulda been a character that wiped the table with everyone except maybe Luke. And he should have other things going on than just wanting to be Vader

Han is a scoundrel of course he left Leia especially after the failure of his kid. Ontop of that Leia is married to her work. Makes sense to me.

Han/Leia are much more interesting when they are attracted to each other but simultaneously annoy the shit out of each other.

I'm not sure why people keep posting this idea that she was able to do it because she knows Jedi did it. It's not setup like this and it doesn't make any sense. She had actual experience in doing it by pushing Kylo out of her head. She knows it's possible and kind of did it already.

He's not a master knight. That was the entire point.

To think Kylo was beaten by someone so novice using the force, it baffles me. I do believe, however, is he will get a lot stronger in terms of mind and all throughout Ep8, which I do believe will corner resistance forces like Empire Strikes Back did in way back. At least he needs to be super bad ass, considering what he has done on Ep7!!!!

He is being taken in for training so I expect we'll see a big difference in his combat prowess between this movie and Episode IX.

I don't get it. What makes Rey a Mary Sue? Is Luke a Mary Sue?

I never remembered Luke doing anything as ridiculous as the Millennium Falcon scene in Force Awakens with Rey. I like how they attempted to make it seem like she'd have no idea how to fly this old, outdated ship and then 5 seconds later she's hitting trick noscope 420 falcon dives in it.

Luke got his ass kicked initially by the stupid little droid training thing. How does some scavenger who has spent her whole life on Jakku know how to fly some hundred/thousand year old space ship?

I noticed a small detail that was so out of place in the "Star Wars Universe" I'm convinced it was a production error. When they are at the Resistance base you see an X-Wing getting towed in the background with regular Earth aircraft landing gear and rubber tires. There ain't supposed to be tires in Star Wars! Tank treads on Sandcrawlers, wheels on droids, but no tires!

Please fix this in The Force Awakens: Special Edition, J.J.

The mind reading powers are all knew and as far as I'm concerned have nothing to do with Jedi mind tricks.

She used the force to block him from being able to read her mind, you don't need to know how to use the force to block a Jedi from using mind tricks on you.

It feels like it's a completely different power with different rules.

i just want to know where a guy who was part of a pseudo nazi death cult since birth learned all his banter.

You do realize that fucking 1 year olds are capable of excited expressions in a similar manner right?
One time my son (1 yr at the time) responded to his name with an extremely energetic "YEAH!" I have no idea where he even picked it up since he is mostly surrounded by JP speakers as well.

I really don't understand the need to nitpick some of these kinds of things.

He's not a master, Snoke even says he hasn't completed his training he's still an apprentice

I think someone said she spent a lot of time repairing it

if not, it would've made sense though

The actor who played Wedge is the only one alive that hates Star Wars more than Harrison Ford. They tried to get him back for 7.
Really? But he made the Rogue Squadron games... :(

I thought he said he didn't want a minor cameo role

i doubt they'll keep him "evil", especially if he ends up being the only skywalker progeny. though killing your dad would require a pretty hefty repentance.

if he does "turn" i hope it isn't the last minute before he gets killed. though that's the most predictable route to go with that character, wouldn't be surprised

I know. Disney are such half-wits. Lucas did a much better job with Anakin.

Did anyone else notice that in the scene where C-3P0 and leia are seeing han and ren off to the starkiller base C-3PO's feet appear to be in gold spraypainted sneakers?

I definitely noticed it because we were in the very front row and it looked off.

Snoke said something like "You will lead the Knights of Ren"

I mean that's fine. Just the way he was setup in the trailers to be a badass and how he ended up getting punked by just about everyone in the movie was jarring. Gonna have to see more from him in the next movies before I see him as some kind of iconic villain.

This isn't communicated very well. I had no problems following it, but I can definitely see confusion on this point due to the fuzzily apathetic treatment of space and scale.

What?? Where is this coming from how is he pouty??

What the hell.

I find Ren to be a great villain because he is a whiny, wannabe, tantrum throwing child. Because of these things he seems so more personal and real. Not to forget that he's slightly messed in head by praying to a melted helmet. Sure, it's a low point for the character but that gives him room to rise in the future movies.
