The biggest lesson of 2015 box office that the super hero genre is not the king of the blockbuster, the Lucas/Spielberg style blockbusters from Lucasfilm and Amblin still are the king and have much much wider appeal as they have been since the one-two punch of Jaws in '75 and Star Wars in '77.

The basically non-existent drop on Sunday is a solid early indicator this is could play out like a movie that opens like a blockbuster but with legs like a December release. Summer blockbusters do not have those crazy low drops on their opening Sunday typically.

Your posts sounds like someone who just wants Avatar to have a way to cling-on to the #1 domestic side. Not to mention "original and creative" is not an objective criteria at all like you claim lol. Who is to say Avatar is original and creative? That's pure opinion.

Saw it at 7pm Sunday night (non 3D) and waited outside for 30mins for good seats. Showing before was sold out and my theater was probably sold out too. When I got to the theater at 4pm trying to get tickets for the 4:45 showing, IMAX 3d showings were sold out until 11pm. It was insanity there.

Oh is is still up there even if he falls to #2. No question. He is part of that trio, anyone who says otherwise is crazy. Clearly the kings of the 80's/early 90's blockbusters with Spielberg's Amblin, Lucas's Lucasfilm, and Cameron still have much wider appeal than any super hero franchise could ever hope to achieve.

It was only a year ago people were declaring no one gave a shit about Spielberg/Lucas franchises, the kids only want Avengers. In all honesty I sort of believed it too, I thought Gambit was crazy in his Star Wars #1 & Jurassic World #2 for the year prediction.

i really liked the anti-military plot and having the lead be a paralyzed person. could have done without the aliens looking so fugly tho.

I am really curious to see how Ghostbusters does. People complain about "ewwww girls" nonsense but a trailer with the Ray Parker Jr. theme playing? That's going to hit the nostalgia button of a lot of people.

Both Gremlins and Bill & Ted are in development hell and have been for years, I wouldn't expect them anytime soon if ever until they actually are in pre-production.

Such a strong opening, and a well deserved one due to the quality of the movie. It will certainly be interesting to see how the openings of Episodes 8 & 9 compare when we get a new Star Wars film every year (and of course how the spinoffs do compaired to the main films).

There were no avatar toys prior to avatar, surely we should account for this pent up demand and marketing in the reception of a film (like with the MCU for another example). There is only one avatar, which makes its performance all the more exemplary of how quality can cross demographics worldwide.

Yeah, it's not the greatest movie ever (not even close) and Cameron has shown he can clearly do better but it's a fine enough movie and was absolutely worth the price of admission to see in IMAX 3D.

I always find it weird how Avatar seems to be the movie that receives all the salt regarding its box office performance while Titanic is more or less left alone. I LOVED Titanic but as I understand it that movie wasn't received nearly as well in hindsight.

Titanic is half a great movie. The first half is garbage, but once the ship starts sinking I enjoyed it.

Titanic got a similar amount of hate when it came out from a certain contingent of people. A nerdy contingent of people, that is. All based entirely on the fact that it was just too successful. Titanic has actually climbed a full point on imdb since it came out, if I'm remembering things correctly.

It borrows elements from the whole OT, but it's pretty much ANH. I'm posting this again cuz I just like it that much.

The movie opens on Not Tattooine. A droid, Not R2-D2, is given information that is vital to the Not Rebellion. The Not Empire is searching for this droid, led by Not Darth Vader (an apprentice of Not The Emperor). The actual Millennium Falcon is used by Not Luke Skywalker to escape Not Tattooine.

Not Luke Skywalker needs to find the leaders of Not The Rebellion, which leads her to look for underworld contacts in a cantina, Not Mos Eisley. Not Luke Skywalker discovers that she is Force sensitive and begins to discover her powers.

Eventually some of our heroes find their way to Not The Rebellion's hideout on the forest planet of Not Yavin 4. Here they learn about Not The Empire's new superweapon the Not Death Star. In a demonstration of Not The Death Star's power it is used to destroy the civilian planet of Not Alderaan.

During a daring escape from Not The Empire Not Luke Skywalker watches helplessly as a wise old man she has come to see as a father figure, Not Obi-Wan, is cut down by Not Darth Vader.

Meanwhile, a group of X-Wing pilots perform a Not Trench Run in order to blow up Not The Death Star by exploiting a design flaw.

Yeah those posts are low key making me want Star Wars to be unable to win the best selling of all time. Just to see the tears. While this movie is fantastic, it sure as hell isn't some creative or groundbreaking movie. Avatar pushed movies forward with what it did with 3D, far more than the new Star Wars.
