The friend I saw this with said to me last night that Star Wars Episode VII was better than Mad Max: Fury Road

I liked Mad Max more but I think it's a pretty valid opinion

It begins principal photography in less than 3 weeks. Scripted is locked. Pre-production complete. Sets built. That whole jazz.

It isn't a movie that is just in planning or just in pre-production at this point.

Episode 8 will be done filming in a matter of months from now.

If they move it they will be sitting on a fully complete movie for over 6 months. This isn't like the Episode VII delay where they scrapped the script and started over and delayed it back then in pre-production before it was even cast or anything.

I dunno

I just got a bad feeling about this

when can we expect those delicious leaks though

Though I like ROTS, this always bums me out because you look at what the character is like in TPM and you go "what the fuck happened here?"

Her dying of a broken heart was the worst offense to the character.

Padme never came across as someone who needed a man. I always imagined she ended up with Anakin because Anakin appealed to her impulse to escape from her political responsibilities, but that doesn't translate to "I can't live without you."

Seriously I think a lot of people aren't really aware how deep into production Episode 8 is. Full principal photography is just a few weeks away, shoots in Jan.

Was there a 1138 reference anywhere? If there was, I didn't catch it. All the other recurring stuff happened (Wilhelm scream/chase scene/monsters/someone falling down a pit/I have a bad feeling about this) but I didn't notice this one.

Not that I can recall, but Finn's ID number, 2187, is a reference to 21-87, a college film that inspired Lucas on a lot of his projects, namely THX-1138 and Star Wars.

I loved Mad Max till the 2nd act. The movie went downhill when they went back. that retroactively destroyed the first 2 acts for me. Force Awakens got better with each act.

Force Awakens is the best Star Wars movie in 30 years.
Fury Road is the best action movie in the last 20 years.

I can't blame your friend for taking that stance, even if I liked Fury Road more.

My thread was closed, whatever for me :

ESB --> ANW > ROTJ--------------------> TFA>ROTS>CW>TPM

I can't agree with anyone who won't rank Clones as the last movie.

My friend says that the only time they use Luke's music from the OT is when Rey is in her trance and opening herself to The Force. Can anyone confirm? He thinks that points directly to her being Luke's kid.

just saw it last night!

Gotta say, JJ did a great job staying true to the whole Star Wars style from the original trilogy. It felt straight up like the next movie after ROTJ. My only serious gripe was there was too much comedy with Han and Chewy when they first showed up. But hey its for kids and it was pretty funny at parts. I just wish it had a more dark tone at parts. Plus the ending battle was way too rushed. It just came together too fast like they needed to end it with a death star style battle but didnt have time to set it up properly.

So MAD that they gave Luke like 2 minutes of screen time and no lines at all. WTF JJ. Atleast he looked awesome as Obi-Luke.

My only complaint is the whole Knights of Ren and the Jedi Massacre backstory. I mean how old is Kylo at this point? He looks way too young. When does he get recruited by them and then where did they all go after?

‘Star Wars’ writers explain everything about Kylo Ren’s turn to the Dark Side

I really want a Knights of Ren KOTOR game from Bioware now instead of Mass Effect asap now.

Finn was also a trained soldier and most likely somewhat experienced in hand-to-hand combat. So it makes sense that he could at least last 30 seconds against a semi-trained, injured sith.

Also, Rey has to be Luke's daughter. First of all, the movies are about the Skywalkers primarily. Then you have the trailer with Luke's voiceover talking about the Force in his family.

Maybe Luke and Leia had a secret child while Han was away, and Leia was shocked at what had happened so she sent Rey away to another planet to hide her and Luke went into hiding in shame over what happened, and now Luke, unaware that Rey is his daughter, will fall in love with her and have a child with her to continue the Skywalker line!

Yes I agree that Rey is Luke's daughter. It's just the simplest explanation, and the lightsaber calling to her and Maz and Solo's reaction suggest it. They won't go for an overly complex explanation, and it provides an easily understandable reason for her force affinity to be stronger than Ren's who is also a Skywalker.

Why? It's not like they are rushing this at all. It's not like they started it only after TFA was done. Rian Johnson was witting this well over a year ago while TFA was filming. All the pre-production work on it was being done while TFA post-production was going on.

I don't have a clue why people think it's being rushed. 7 and 8 were worked on simultaneously by different parts of the production.

What!? That's crazy. I mean, I guess I knew it was releasing in 2 years but I figured it still had a few months of pre-production to go through before filming started.

I have an ominous feeling that Star Wars might lose some of its magic once we're inundated with a new one every year.

Michael Giacchino's credited as Stormtrooper FN-3181 in the credits, which is 1138 jumbled up.

"CW" is Clone Wars, which is the TV show. The movie is AOTC, and it is the worst.

By the way, I totally think Episode VIII is gonna get bumped to Dec. 2017.

I feel like May would be too close for comfort

Nah, it's not like the same creatives are having to turn around from TFA to go straight into another film in another year and a half.

Rian Johnson's probably had more time to put VIII together than Abrams did with TFA. I believe he's been working on his script and pre-production before this film even started shooting. There's no way they won't have time to finish by May. Movies aren't like games, people have figured out how to make films on-time. Delays are exceptionally rare among big films. Oftentimes dates are announced 4 or 5 years in advance and they hit them just fine.

It's out in a year and a half. Rian Johnson wrote the movie last year through part of this year. And pre-production work has been going on since this summer. Already shot a few on location scenes for 8 a month back.

Well, I think we'd be glad to address the problems you stated in that thr--

The perfect Mary Sue, her character is absolutely the reflect of the cinema for the last 5 years now when all the girls have to be more powerful than boys for a reason but she failed as a character where Furiosa on Mad Max succeed.

Not saying your opinion is completely invalid, it's just that you would not believe how many times we've come back to this topic in this thread.

I will say just this, TFA is even better than ANH because it doesn't need any prequel to explain the villain character, it's already perfectly set up within the movie, his origin, his motivation, what drives him and what makes him doubt as well as his no return point.

And not only the villain, but also the other characters are so damn well drawn.

TFA is an ANH with the good parts of the prequels included. Add on top actually good acting except for Fisher which is constant.

That's why TFA is the second best Star Wars after ESB.

SW movies are not characterized by good stories, so being a remake of ANH is not that important in the big scheme of things.

I agree that Mad Max Fury Road is better than TFA. Even though Fury Road is a sequel to the previous films, no previous knowledge was needed to fully understand or enjoy it. OTOH, TFA has so many unanswered questions that either were not answered or require some obscure EU source that IMO makes it insular and hostile to SW newcomers.

Only to SW fans that spend too much time arguing on forums.
