Steam security issue revealed personal info to other users on XMas Day (fixed)

i think we are safe now. they shut down the important stuff. If you didnt get charged anything by now you are probably safe.

Oh God I hope so! I opened my Steam client at what was probably the moment when they started shutting everything down, so hopefully no one was able to see my info. I am pretty sure I didn't have any credit cards saved, but I really don't want my info out there either. So nervous right now!

Its classic valve. They can do what the fuck they want though. Give it 2 days and everyone will be saying how much they hate services they've never used, like origin and uplay and much prefer steam.

Well, tbf, Uplay is terrible. Origin is fine from my experience though, apart from the auto-login never fucking working.

Asking again... I'm away from home. Is everything good as long as I don't log in?

No. The issue was quite likely related to caching due the random nature of account access (at one point the store was in Spanish and "I" had DMC3 in "my" cart). There's no way of knowing how far back the caches extend.

Why? We already know.

I was really lucky to even be aware of this issue. Decided to check gaf real quick before hanging out with the family. Had I not I would have never known about this, and most likely would not have known for several days. Valve has the responsibility to inform their millions of customers when shit like this goes down. I thought that was standard operating procedure for almost all companies, but I guess not. When gaf is the primary source of this news for many people than you know Valve done fucked up in a major way. Just inexcusable.

WTF....

Normally, if random users account is exposed, especially with THIS amount of information exposed, companies should contact every users ASAP.

WTF is Valve doing...

Figuring out the spread of the damage. You're expecting a full write up an hour after the incident?

SteamDB has no affiliation with Valve, they're just guessing at what happened. I don't understand why people keep linking to them...

Because it's helpful in place of Valve's silence. You have to take their information for what it is. They are making it perfectly clear that they are not an official source.

I noticed something was going on when I saw the login button from the website in the top of the steam client, though I was using my account. Also, the region content changed when refreshing the client, so I got the russian, brazilian, italian, etc.. versions (language, prices, etc..)

Paypal screenshots are obviously fake because Steam redirectes you to Paypal and you have to log in and confirm the payment there to finish the purchase.

I have my full bank account coupled to Steam through PayPal. I'm pretty pissed off at this happening.... I *think* there is an option to use express purchases but I don't even know at this point. I can't even begin to imagine the full extend of this disaster.

Updated the information post demonstrating users were able to access full cell phones and address records. Sent the information along to Valve Time so they wouldn't forward false information to a wide audience.

I can tell you right now people on 4chan are posting this same screen, but with various other peoples info - and they aren't blocked out. It's out there, if you saved your credentials you are in trouble and I hope you can cancel/lock/change your details ASAP.

Not really, as you can save Paypal details for quick purchases on Steam with the 'My Paypal Account' option.

When good things far outweigh the bad, I'm sticking with Steam. I won't excuse this, though. There is no amount of damage control from elitist filth that will make me feel any different. I'll be removing my Paypal and credit card information ASAP.

It's Christmas Day. Pretty much the only inconvenient day in the entire year for something like this to happen. I imagine their best IT guys are drunk or on vacation and others are scrambling to get away from their families.

There is no official response so you cant know for sure.
If SteamDB's guess is correct you are probably fine if you haven't accessed any steam related pages while logged in in the past few days.

The digital future is going to be a dangerous one. This is a pretty eye-opening situation.

it's only dangerous because they have a monopoly. valve has been incompetent for years -- at least 3 -- where they half ass literally everything they do. and yet nothing bad comes out of it since they have no real competition as a digital delivery service

the problem is that before, with the console generations, every 5 or so years you would get a reset and anyone who fucked up got whooped (nintendo 64, ps3 etc). but that doesn't happen anymore which allows them to fuck up as much as they want

Well a lot of people did portbeg stuff from consoles

so they ported your info so everyone can see it

joking and i know it's not an account breach whatsoever

Hope they get this fix so I can play stuff ;_;

Yeah this is the final straw, I'm going full on pre-paid cards from here on in and I will be limiting my purchases on Steam to its absolute minimum (thankfully boxed PC games still exist).

I see. Basically woke up from a nap to this mess less than a hour ago and read about it in a text from a friend telling me not to log on to Steam and I was like "well..." since my computer was on. Doesn't seem I got charged anything, I cancelled the Paypal authorization just in case though.

Again, please stop with the holiday excuse. When you open a store for business you take on the risk of something like this happening.

If Valve didn't want to work over Christmas they shouldn't be open for business.

Nope. once you authorized it you only have to login after a few purchases again.

Not always. The PayPal credentials are occasionally unnecessary. I know because I use it.

They are unnecessary only in the case you are already logged into paypal, something another person would obviously won't be in their browsers. You still always have to confirm from paypal.

Origin's great actually if only because of EA's exceptional CS. As a client, it's average. It serves its purpose as a store front. However, you at least know EA will acknowledge something when it happens.

I can't get near a PC until Tuesday!

I hope my account is okay!

I think I'm going to remove my paypal details on Tuesday. I have deleted all of my credit card info from PSN.

The only place I trust is Xbox Live as they have a double authentication system.

I hope all is well

I have plenty of games on steam but I don't think I've ever actually purchased any games on the platform itself. Is it safe for me to log in to check things out or should I stay offline?

Edit: And I haven't logged in for a few weeks either.

Double Edit: Should have read the first post more closely... :P

Sadly even disc based games are dying off.
Got Fallout 4 on disc today.......wtf with the downloads
