Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Steam pre-order is LIVE

Do you only do the monster climbing stuff if you're playing a Warrior? Or can, say, the magic classes, climb also?

For people who have played this before...what is the most fun to play? How do the play styles differ? How easy is it to switch vocations?
Everyone can climb.

Though as a mage you'll likely want to be at a distance.

Everyone can climb but it's rarely worth it for mage vocations since they can throw spells from a distance. The best climbing classes are the dagger-using ones, since they can use Hundred Kisses (high-DPS dagger spam) on weak points.

It's very easy to switch vocation. You do it at the inn as soon as you reach the big city (early in the game), just gotta re-equip and re-memorize your skills and that's it. It's encouraged to switch vocation every now and then so you can learn Augments (passive skills) from every class and balance your stats growth (so even if you're playing a mage, switching to a warrior for a while to get some HP and defense boost can be helpful). So don't worry about having to focus on one vocation, the game is meant to encourage experimentation.

Monster climbing is generally meh if you don't use daggers. Every class can do it, but all of them are limited to basic light attacks while doing so(mages can use heavy attack but it bounces them off the monster, useful to dismount while doing damage then float away). Daggers however have a few skills that can be used while mounted, specifically Hundred Kisses(and it's variants). Assassins can also use a sword skill while mounted but Fighters don't get that skill.

Climbing still has some advantages, such as baiting the monster into certain moves(like trying to swat you off its head or jumping on its back to the ground to try to squash you) which let the rest of your team do damage. It's also useful due to the targetted nature of the attacks. While for some classes this isn't useful(say Sorceror, who use massive aoe skills anyway), if the target has weak spots it can do more damage than doing normal skills in other parts(easy example, light attacks in the eye of a cyclops do more than skills in its feet).

In my opinion, the most fun are Strider based classes. That is, Strider(duh), Ranger, Magick Archer and Assassin. Mostly because I think dagger fighting is the most fun, due to the climbing stuff and the fast speed, move cancel, dodge rolls, double jumps and so on. Note that Ranger in that list is way way more focused on using the long bow than daggers, so I'd say it's at the bottom of the list for me.

The casters are cool to play for a bit but I tend to find hem boring very quickly since most of the gameplay involves charging up big spells then releasing to kill everything at once. The feeling of bombarding a pack of stupid wolves with meteors is definitely great the first few times, but later on it's kinda like, eh.

Fighter based classes(that is other than assassin) can be fun, but I find them less rewarding than the Strider based classes. Mystic Knight is unique enough though that it's definitely worth trying.

In the end however it's all a matter of taste. Oh and switching is super easy, just talk to a NPC to switch, then you need to switch your gear but takes like 10secs most of the time.

All can climb. Strider/assassin class dealt most damage climbing, since they had a skill called "kisses" for concentrated high damage at a specific point (which also worked when climbing). Sorcerers where the worst for climbing damage iirc since most skills cannot be performed when climbing.

You get to choose 3 classes until later, or by reaching Bitterblack Isle as soon as you can.

Most fun?

For Bitterblack DLC: Magic Archer, followed by Sorcerer and Mystic Knight. You need to reach a certain level before being able to choose advanced classes.

For the rest of the game: Assassin followed by Sorcerer.

Ranger is the least fun because his/her melee isn't as versatile as magic archer or assassin/strider and his/her unique skills don't make up for it since they get real boring real fast. You can buy blast arrows and spam a certain skill to stunlock death, but even that got boring tbh.

It's so great seeing people play this game. I remember playing it back in 2012 launch day and feeling bummed out that this may be a cult hit. And here we are near 2016 and people are still playing it.

How much better is this than the PS3 version to those who have played it,
did they add anything new ?

It's not actually out for a few more weeks. My understanding though is that it has all of the content released for the PS3/360, except for some armor based on the series "Berserk", plus 4k support and better FPS.

The PS3 version is the worst version of Dragon's Dogma. The resolution and framerate alone justify the purchase of the PC version. But no, nothing new. And there's no Beserk Armor nor Japanese audio due to licensing.

4K Support! 60 FPS! All DLC! 30 Bucks!

Fucking sold.

just sold my ps3 copy for 5€, i'm inclined to put it towards this pc version. didn't really appreciate it much on the ps3, muddy visuals and headache inducing frame-rate.

Been looking forward to this for a long time! Glad to see it coming to PC!

Is there any chance we might get games like Shadow of the Damned soon? There is a whole other bunch of 360/PS3 Japanese third-person games I haven't played. Like Vanquish. Would love to buy that. Would probably buy an Xbox One Elite controller for that game alone!

As for difficulty, unless you play on hardmode, a lot of DD can be facerolled by mashing one button over and over, especially if you build your pawns correctly...

On hard mode, more finesse is required due to getting hit like a truck by about everything, ...

Guess I'll be starting Hard then.

Jesus, that processor minspec seems a bit steep for a last gen port.

Anyone think an FX6300 will do fine here or am I going to need to OC?

Yeah definitely go with Hard Mode if you want a challenge, be prepared to deal with some crazy stamina drain when using skills though...

Wait seriously?
I can't wait. This is too much for me.
Yep, it's on the front page of his website. He does also say something else though, which I THINK he means it may not happen if the port is complete shit to work with.

I'm really glad it's held interest for so many people this long. My favorite game of all time, and I'm so pumped to play it all over again on the PC.

I'm (probably) not getting Witcher 3 during this Steam sale because I know I can't beat it before this game arrives. And I've beaten it thoroughly three times.

2 weeks, 1 day and 13 hours to go.

Yup, learned that the hard way (hated being a sorcerer for 20 hours, just to have a decent Magic Archer, and it turns out i wasn't that better in stats afterall).
Totally not worth it, just select a class you enjoy and have fun.
The game is easy anyway.

Easy? Compared to what? While it's not Dark Souls, it's at times definitely one of the harder action RPGs I remember playing.

Of course you can kill all difficulty by having dozens of spring water bottles.

The game is only hard for the inexperienced.

The game is easy once you know the enemies and strategies, includng all bosses and I only exclusively played on hard difficulty from day1. You can make it artificially hard for yourself by trying on monsters at lower levels, but you can't respec so you only can do that per save. And you always hear people harp on about "don't worry about stats", "play as you want" because the game is that forgiving.

The DLC area was designed for farming materials and purifying (and optionally dragonforging) loops, so it makes sense that people could "farm boss" or whatevers and not break a sweat. Only one or two instances of the Rotundra of Dread type infinite arena battles could spawn an enemy combination that would take some thinking to defeat, like two drakes or something, depending on what class your playing as. Sorcy could cheese most of those situations, just take longer.

Huh. Got more answers on my min/maxing than I expected lol. Yeah I've already played the game once on Xbox 360 without min maxing and got fucking rekt in the original post-game boss battle (you know the one) because apparently the class wasn't optimal or I was too low level.

This time I'll play an assassin but I want to min max at least to what folks recommend the perfect level to change was (warrior at level 10 to Assassin).

If the game has console commands though I'll likely just start as a strider/Ranger and then fix the stats to be if I started as a warrior though. I just really like daggers yo

If it doesn't have commands though I might just play as a strider again but this time switch to Assassin unlike last time.

This is such a weird thing to say. It's an action RPG with enemies that have weaknesses, of course it'll be much easier when you get to know your enemies. I also have an easy time with the game nowadays, but I wouldn't call it an easy game, cause I certainly had problems here and there on my first playthrough.

I'm kind of interested in this game, especially after they said that it'll run great on a 750Ti. How fast is the combat? I can't stand anything resembling the Dark Souls games since they're much too slow paced and methodical for my tastes. Also, what's the best deal on this at the moment? I get paid tomorrow and was thinking of picking it up if I could find some high level gameplay of it so that I could see what I'd be in for.

Compared to the times I risked failing or dying, during the game? There are some difficulty spikes here and there, but all in all, it's pretty chill.

it's dependent on the weapons you chose, but overall I would say it's much faster. not exactly bloodborne-fast, but definitely more faster and more hack'n'slashy than demons souls and dark souls.

Strider's class is faster than Bloodborne, BB is "fast" in relation to Dark Souls, but in and out of itself it's relatively slow and deliberate, still.

I am starting to ignore minimum cpu specs, they often are Bullshit. I still use an i7 870, which was below minimum for games like unity and Witcher 3, but those games ran fine on high settings.
