Activision gobbles up MLG in $46 million takeover

I wonder if MLG touched the sides as it slid down Activision's capacious gullet? With barely a squeak, the ailing esports firm has become part of the publishing behemoth in a takeover deal worth $46 million cash. Or rather, MLG continues to operate as MLG but Activision has acquired the bulk of its assets and associated liabilities. As part of the deal, CEO Sundance DiGiovanni has been ousted and replaced with former MLG CFO Greg Chisholm.

Minority shareholders are a little upset about the deal—because nobody bothered to consult them. Suspicions are that much of that money will go towards relieving MLG's $6 million debt as opposed to investors' pockets. Esports Observer reported a poignant quote from one such individual: "I got fucked on stock."

In less corporate terms, I see consequences for esports already. MLG's fortunes took their most visible dive when ESL was awarded the Call of Duty World League in preference. But of course, ActiBlizzard owns Call of Duty, as it owns Starcraft and Overwatch. It's hard to imagine them on show anywhere other than Activision's new-grown, $46-million esports arm.

STEAM | 01/2016 - Out of cash, out of cache is one of the most on point thread titles we had. Does it mean that morningus is back to being himself again?

in other news, thanks to valve screwing card trading I didn't get to lvl 200 after all, so close yet so far. *profound sadness*

the first game I've finished this year is SquareCells, no surprise here, it was OK, nice take on nonograms with a twist. Will wait for SquareCells plus now.
What I don't get, why Matthew keeps insisting on no cards policy, those games being somewhat popular would bring him extra money and not that little, very strange.

anyone ;^;

FF7 surely, especially if you haven't played it. Although I'd go with both, even flawed as it is FF8 is a damn good game.

If you haven't played a FF game I wouldn't exactly recommend the PS1 ones. The animations are excessive, making the games really slow. Maybe if there was a FF VII PC Fast forward mod like the PS4 version.

No discount on REmake yet huh? What's taking so long

It was 25% off in the halloween and summer sale, no clue why they didn't discount it this time. Maybe they thought people would pick it up at full price along with RE0 or something.

Also, Commander Keen 1-5 was a single game. No +5 for me :/

I was looking for someone to sell me or turn me off Armello

It looks really cool, and I love board games. I couldn't wait until I posted this question let alone wait for a response, but then I noticed that it's barely mentioned in this thread and could do with some exposure (although not from me since I've yet to finish downloading it). So if it looks interesting check out this caffeinated review I found

If you're into euro-style board games, Armello unfortunately falls short. I backed it on Kickstarter, and was left a tad disappointed because there are too many random elements and rolls that come to play. Sure, luck is a factor in many board games, I just felt that it was a tad too much in this case. I prefer strategy to the major factor in winning, but Armello seems to be a toss up.

Umm I did play FF7. That and FF8 are the only 2 mainline FFs i've played other than XIII series.

wait a bloody second, and after that you said Dissidia is better...

I can't forgive this, I just can't.

FF8 is terrible.

nah, it has a nice world, great sidequests, a lot of secrets, interesting enemies, etc.
double story with two sets of main characters is an amazing idea too
I no way it's terrible as a whole. It is a flawed game, but let's not get on that hyperbole train for no reason.

More importantly, Wrex or NotWrex?
Also, did you fry Liara's brain?

Garrus and Wrex for approximately 95% of the game. The only time I switched out was for Liara to kill her mother and Tali to get Geth data stuff. Never used A/K after Eden Prime. Otherwise, I went full goody-goody.

The jank in ME1 is a real chore at times.

FF8 is terrible.

FF8 is terrible.

No, the game is actually good, and the fact you can complete it with level six characters or so it's very interesting, a thing you don't experiment in other FF games. You can power-up characters simply by using junction system and the right spells, plus weapons (you can get Lion Heart for Squall in the beginning of CD 2 if I remember correctly). This means avoiding totally random fights, since the boss level scales with your character (ie fighting the Omega Weapon on level six is totally different from fighting the same enemy on level 100, you can kill the Omega in a couple of minutes on level six, on level 100 the fight is brutal and it can take hours).

I really like the story, the fact it is non-linear and open to interpretations, the optional quests like the stones one or the UFO one, hidden summons, the soundtrack is amazing.

On the other side, I just hated FFXII, I found it boring, with total uninteresting characters except a couple of them, I didn't like the mmorpg structure and it's the only FF I completed by doing the main quest only, and this forcing me.

Ff8 is hot garbage. The defense force for that game blows my mind.

Umh, no, it isn't. You can or can't like the game, and that's up to you, but the game improved a lot of things from FFVII (for the graphics at least).
Label it as "hot garbage" is simply unfair, just say you don't like it and that's it.

I usually agree with you, but not this time, bad story has nothing to do with a game being good or bad, it's gameplay that has to do everything with that, and gameplay system is not broken, it's combat that is somewhat broken, but yet again FF8 has so much to offer besides combat that even this conclusion is not true at all. And even brokedness of combat can be lived with, because you can kinda ignore it, many people do just that.

Umh, no. If I think the story in a game is crappy, that counts for me to decide if the game is bad or not. Expecially in story focused games like FF.
And I don't think the combat is broken, there are simply ways to power-up characters very fast, but it's up to you discover them, I think it's a gameplay feature. I honestly prefer this instead of grinding 300 hours in order to reach level 99 and destroy everything.

(It's basically Final Fantasy the cRPG, though you'd appreciate that)
How did you ever even arrive at that comparison?

The reason I think 8 is one of the worst FFs I've played (and I played most of them) is that the story is terrible even by FF standards and its major gameplay system is completely broken.

Just like in most of cRPGs. QED

Seriously though, it's a system-based game taken to the extreme. That's not something many jRPGs do, the only other ones I can think of are Akitoshi Kawazu games, and they always stroke me as something very close to a cRPG (when I was playing Romancing SaGa 3, I just couldn't shake the feeling that this is a Might & Magic game in disguise).

I'm interested in playing a Ys game but I don't know which one to go for...

I'm picking between these three:

Origin
Oath in Felghana
Ark of Napishtim

Won't be home from work in time to try the demo of Origin before the sale ends

Any suggestions?

I think Oath is a pretty good starting place. Origin is technically my favorite of the two. Skip Ark for now.

I was very impressed with Ys I&II once I sat down with them and didn't just mess around for 5 minutes. Though I liked 1 more so. II got a bit too maze like.

IMHO I recommend Origin and Oath, but play Oath first.
If you end up getting all 3, I recommend playing them as 6>3 (Oath)>Origin
In order to see how the gameplay improved from 6 unto Origin.

If you care about the game timeline, Origin is the first one, if not, pick Oath, Origin is too brutal for being the first one to play (it was my first :P).

My favorite game of all time, indisputably, by a huge green country mile, is Planescape: Torment.

So what I'm saying is "no".

OK... it's your choice.
I still don't get how story that is literally not a game but a story can make a game bad or horrible. (VNs excluded, of course)
Oh well

No wait why buy a Final Fantasy game when you can just buy Trails in the Sky with that money!

That's a very good point actually!
