I am a big Apple fan but they are not always right. I don't think they are right about this. I'd rather have a headphone jack than a 1mm thinner phone. so no I will not be dragged, I'll just keep my 6S.

Depends on if that stupid half added smaller connector is real. THAT would be the stupid thing especially if it is just a smaller analog port.
BT is cheap as fuck. It's just got a markup cause its "new" so why not try and make extra cash out of people. Switching to cheap BT earpods wouldn't exactly be a huge hit to the bottom line or something. Then Apple could sell the legacy adapter for extra.
I'm not an Apple soothsayer though.

This is honestly some of the most ignorant commentary I've ever seen in an OP.
I often use my iPhone with a Y cable (RCA to 3.5mm) connected to my A/V receiver to listen to music over my 5.1 surround system. I also use a Y cable with my television, when I want to game through 5.1 and have iPhone music come through the TV speakers. Thirdly, I use a male to male 3.5mm cable to play music in my car every single day.
I would lose ALL this functionality if I upgraded to the next iPhone. Don't be an ass, OP.
edit: and of course my $300 headphones wouldn't work with my phone any more.

when are they gonna change out the AC plug for something more MODERN?? the 3 prong config is ANCIENT. I don't care if it's compatible with every wall plug in North America. Apple will drag you kicking and screaming to a plug no one can use without a stupid dongle and you will THANK THEM.
and again, FLAC or ALE would go SO MUCH FURTHER to improving audio quality than this jack / DAC change.. I don't get it.

Apparently people forgot HTC did this first with the Magic/MyTouch 3G in I believe 2008. right down to getting a dongle to plug in their proprietary socket (It came bundled in with the MyTouch in the US). They got so much flack about it they quickly released a version 2 with a built in headphone jack.

It is also a source of issues and headaches for smaller companies due to Bluetooth being a much more complex technology and having to pass certain certifications.
Bluetooth has been ass since day one. It's the goddamned Adobe Flash of the audio world.
I rather have Bluetooth replaced by a new wireless standard that works and works well than replacing minijacks with a subpar alternative.

I might as well glue the adapter onto my earphone jack. But realistically, I just won't upgrade. Iphone 6 is pretty much all I was looking for. A larger iphone screen and damn thin enough.

Somehow I'm doubting that Apple would include BT headphones. That seems like their $49-99 option for "premium headphones" while they'll include some type of wired solution that costs them almost nothing. Wouldn't be shocked if it comes with some sort of adapter to charge your phone, or use headphones.. If you want to do both, that'll be a $29 adapter.
I don't doubt that a $299 set of BT headphones could sound good, what I'm asking for is for you or someone else that's knowledgeable, to post a link to a set of Bluetooth headphones that are in the mainstream consumer's price point that sound great. Seems like it would be a great resource for GAF if we're truly being pushed to use BT going forward.
Mainstream consumers don't use headphones generally with their phones. They use earbuds, of which there's tons of 20 dollar BT variations that sound just as good (or better, or worse) than your standard wired earbuds. I bought the V-moda simply because I needed a pair of headphones that sound great while wired to my PS4/Xbox One for gaming, wired to my Mac for music, and wireless to use on my Apple TV 4 to watch movies/netflix with. The reason they're 300 dollars isn't because they sound great via Bluetooth. It's because they include the same hardware/tech that they use in the wired M-100 version.

Jaybirds. MKB did a review of them. The X2s are newer so they have a markup. You can get the X1s for under $100 though. My local target had them like $75 over the Holidays.

Thank god? Get the hell away from me, is more like it (the phone, not you OP, although...). Yeah, luddite, whatever, this would be an absolute dealbreaker for me (and anyone who's somewhat serious about music and headphones, I'd think). Wireless headphones can be a nice convenience, but no really good IEMs (or similar) are wireless, so you're gonna need an adapter. No thanks.

Instant dealbreaker, and there are very very few things I place into that category... Had been pondering my phone future with all contracts up soon. I thought the move to the lightning connector was bullshit, too, given they could have just gone to Micro USB because of the obvious proprietary cashgrab push, but at least that thing plugs into a traditional USB outlet on the other end. Removing the aux jack is like asking for a different connection on both ends of what would otherwise be a 100% normal connection. This feels similar to the XB1's original "all digital future" vision in that most people are simply in no position for that move yet and was universally panned. It'll get a hundred times more traction Because Apple, though.
This may be a shock to you, but the world isn't automatically and instantly better with fewer wires. WiFi was an easy catch-on because it was added convenience without any drawbacks. This is not that. Bluetooth everything is not necessarily more convenient. Not now. Give it 10 years and we'll talk.

Hell, Apple itself has high-end headphones that use it, but hey they'd love to sell you a new pair of awful headphones to match the new tech! They're not going to be able to get the average person to swap to wireless headphones because they're still ridiculously inconvenient. Even if the ability to use them on the fly becomes 100% fluid and simple it's still a pain in comparison and cost-prohibitive. It's sort of in line with the Apple Watch, I guess. "Hey, how'd you like to use this pain in the ass method that has better technical specs to do stuff that would take 2 seconds to check using your phone?" Yeah, it's a theoretical improvement in convenience, but there's a reason the watches haven't caught on.

It's amazing how Apple can get people to praise them for making dongles necessary. I still laugh every time I'm in a meeting and people with Macbooks need a dongle to connect it to our projector/display. Display Port will replace HDMI any day now, right?

Any adapter would require a relatively large dongle (either fixed to the phone or dangling from a cable) due to the size of the 3.5mm minijack, making it a shitty solution. Lighting connectors are also considerably more fragile due to their geometry.
Then there's also the issue of getting cheap Lighting dongles/headphones since Apple has a thing for blocking unofficial devices, forcing you to pay through the nose.
This is a terrible idea.

Understood it now or should I explain it again? I dont care if Apple offers solutions for certified headphones, certified apple products are always expensive as hell. I just want to use headphones that arent absurd expensive.
And they are going to restrict this, like they did and continue to do with Lightning USB cables.
I found my perfect pair of headphones, they are Sonys, wired and in ear and coast 20.
I see no reason to pay more than 30 for a pair of headphones, especially they are just wireless. Also, Bluetooth sucks battery out of the phone, too.

They've pushed the old port as far as it can go with additional control rings and gaskets to prevent water damage. But even with my 6s, I was simply in the vicinity of sand last week and now my port is completely broken.
Bluetooth headphones aren't perfect, but I bet anything that the AirPods included with the next iPhone will be wired/wireless, and charge via the phone's lightning adapter, just like the Apple Pencil does. And just like the new Magic Keyboard, when it's wired it'll operate without radios, increasing the fidelity and reducing latency.

But isn't it already possible with the current lightning connector? There seems to be this idea that the only way Apple can improve the audio outputs is by removing the headphone jack, but that's not true at all. They can already output digital audio out of the lightning connector. Nothing is going to change in what the lightning connector is capable of outputting.
