Can't wait until the ends of all my headphone cords look like this:

Only 2014 Apple kids will get this.

Apple makes the shittiest cables in the world. I haven't had on iPhone cable not do this, including my 6. Garbage materials.

Does this mean the DAC is built into the headphone? If its a lightning connector I imagine its still digital coming out the port.

Don't worry guys, if you can't afford this port-less, Bluetooth, wireless future, there's always Android and these.

Apple doesn't need your business to stay profitable, let alone one of the most successful tech companies of all time. Clearly they have no idea what they're doing.

Oh, fuck off. It's not a matter of "affording" anything, despite your shitty post mocking poor people. People buying thousand dollar headphones sure as shit aren't buying them with Bluetooth.

Jesus, I thought I had seen some terrible posts in my time here but wow.

The wireless future where every song is a radio edit because it cuts out on every verse

"man, bob dylan must be cussing up a storm"

I don't see any point to this outside of "fuck you give me money". There's nothing wrong with the aux port.

Looking at the bottom of my phone, they can gain maybe a few millimetres by removing the headphone jack, not sure who's asking for that few millimetres extra thinness.

I suspected you were an idiot but this posts clearly proves it.

3.5mm jack is a standard for a good reason. Apple is insane if they think that this would help them by taking it out.

I read this as "people buying dollar headphones" and still thought it made sense. Because on the flip side, cheapo headsets from the dollar store are obviously not going to work on an iPhone lol

I'm still using a pair I got at Five Below for like 3 dollars a few years ago. A nice pair to keep at work so I always have headphones around for either my computer or phone.

It sure is convenient to have one connector that works on all devices that output audio released since a century ago. What a novel concept that is, having a standard for a cable so it can be used on multiple devices, even ones that are older than you are.

If we went by the logic of it works well enough now then we shouldn't touch it we will have gone nowhere in life.

right now there aren't many great solutions but Apple will provide a reason for manufacturers to create good shit now and have the entire ios audiophile market to themselves. For everybody else, aka the vast majority of iphone users, the earpods it ships with will do fine using the lightning connector.

time to reveal that i am an old man out of touch with reality

...there are wireless headphones? O_o

I can't tell if you are joking or are seriously this much of an ass.

Remember how the Xbox One controller originally launched without a 3.5mm audio port? You had to buy a stupid adapter that had a lot of issues with quality and it breaking. Then they went back and added the 3.5mm port into the controller later on.

Now they are going to have to remove it again if they want to be cool like Apple.

Lightning connector replacing the old one gave us a significant improvement in transfer rates and convenience.

Removing the optical drive freed up a large amount of internal space in their MacBooks.

Ditching the aux jack gives us... A few millimeters of thinness and... Higher quality audio in a world where streaming data is already expensive as fuck...?

What improvements will this bring exactly for the end user? The only other wildcard is if this allows them to waterproof the device.

This is the first I've EVER heard of 3.5mm being obsolete technology. You guys sound like you wipe your ass with the 3 sea shells.

I still use that! Thank You Android!

If Apple was offering a viable alternative that was superior, that would be fine. But the lightning port is neither a viable alternative nor is it superior.

Bluetooth is already available on the iPhone so it's not as if we're gaining wireless audio compatibility as a trade off.

As previously pointed, you don't even need to do away with the minijack connector to waterproof it. Motorola, Sony and Samsung have been building waterproof devices for a while with standard 3.5mm aux jacks.

I'd love to hear Apple's explanation if this turns out to be real.

lol, what a fucking garbage post.

I want to use my decent, comfortable headphones and not some overpriced wireless ones that I need to charge with worse sound quality

Again, it's not only about thinness. I keep saying this but people seriously need to google the Vivo X5 Max. It's an android phone thinner than the iphone 7 will be (most likely) and it has a 3.5mm jack. The jack also has a lot of depth in the phone so who knows what apple will do with the extra space. They wouldn't do it if they didn't feel there was some sort of benefit from it.

If you don't appreciate the benefit, whatever it is, then that's another story altogether. But to your comment and everyone else about 3.5mm port being fine. Did you honestly think you were going to use that port for your entire life? And for the entire life of the next generation of people? It will have to go one day. Apple is doing the same thing they did with cd drives and flash. They're just trying to kickstart that revolution. If it backfires then whatever. If it doesn't then the hope is that companies will make a lot better shit and we'll all benefit in the long run.

It's a worthwhile risk when you have to consider that MOST iphone users use the earphones that come boxed in. And the ones that come boxed in will likely use a lightning connector. It will make no difference to them which hole it goes in.

I'd love to hear Apple's explanation if this turns out to be real.
they might explain why they did it but assuming they don't, why should they? People are seriously overestimating how much the regular consumer will give a shit about this.

Well, there is a great solution right now... the 3.5mm jack.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who use the included earbuds, and in this case they might have to, but I think there is also a VERY large market of people who wish to use their own buds/IEM/headphones/etc.

Let's focus on problems that need fixing first. The 3.5mm audio connector doesn't need to be fixed.

Why is it good for consumers for Apple to corner the market on high-end audio for their devices? Isn't it enough that they've got the low end (pack-ins) and the mid-level (Beats)?

Apple isn't your friend.

I mean I already use my Jaybird X2 bluetooth earbuds during my commute. But that battery isn't eternal. By the time I get to work I charge it and switch to wired earbuds.

Not a move I support. 3.5mm jack is standard and used heavily. This isn't some barely utilized thing we're talking about.

Fuck thin phones.

Killing the floppy - Pathetically small and slow storage that was more or less useless by standards even at that time.

Killing Serial/Parallel/ADB ports - USB had plug and play while the machine is on, zero configuration, and it was an emerging universal standard.

Killing flash - Buggy, slow, insecure, battery killer, web standards emerging to replace it.

Killing the opitcal drive - Few people were using it anymore, took up a third of the space inside a laptop.

Killing the 3.5mm audio jack - ...thinner?

Stupid, stupid, stupid decision. People use the audio jack every day. There's nothing newer to replace it that doesn't require an external DAC. It's not buggy or insecure. Aside from reclaiming a tiny bit of space inside, there's no good reason to take it out. And I'm all for getting rid of legacy stuff.

So here's the equivalent for all the above:

Killing the floppy - Replacing it with proprietary Apple discs.

Killing Serial/Parallel/ADB ports - Replacing them with FireWire instead of USB.

Killing flash - Replacing it with a proprietary Apple solution.

Killing the opitcal drive - Replacing it with fucking MiniDisc or something.

If we went by the logic of it works well enough now then we shouldn't touch it we will have gone nowhere in life.

The 3.5mm audio standard has been around since the days of the transistor radio.

There are certain things that have been around for so long, and so perfected, that it's a waste of resources and energy to try and produce a new standard. The current audio format doesn't just work "well enough" it works essentially perfectly.

This would've been cool if it was like with USB where we are replacing the regular USB as USB-C is available, but as far as I know there is no successor to aux.

I would be fine with this if bluetooth audio didn't suck donkey balls.

I would also prefer if the weight of my headphones is high quality magnets not batteries...

Since when is apple a company that can only work on one thing at a time? I'm sure they're working on as many hardware improvements that they want to work on as they can. Whether that's thinness/waterproofing/other internal improvements/etc...

I use my S6 OEM earbuds on my S6 and I used the earpods back when I had an iphone. Most people are the same.

They aren't my friend and I'll get on their case on things I think deserve to be hated on. Like the 16gb base model...I think that shit is annoying and stupid. But this...I just don't see it. Also not agreeing with the logic of if it's fine then we shouldn't ever touch it.

I'm not opposed to the jack being replaced by something eventually. My issue is what Apple is offering in exchange for it is (allegedly for now) not a real improvement to anyone who isn't an Apple investor.

I'm not into this for thinness but replace that internal room with more battery and it's worth it, as long as the rumors are correct about adding a DAC to the Lightning port.

You can perfect something and still have something superior come along. This is such a ridiculous train of thought that you think from now until the end of time there can never be anything better because it has been perfected.

And before anyone says well there isn't anything better now! That's because there's no reason for making anything different since that's what people used. Apple likely wants to change that and try to push the market to make better shit. You can not want that, that's fine, but there's nothing crazy about that. It's not really high risk. Most won't care.

You guys are forgetting that audio has to be turned into analog waveforms eventually. There's nothing inherently wrong with metal-metal contact in jack form (look at the music industry). The only real issue I see is that 3.5mm jacks on phones can get gunky after being in pockets/purses. I'm still even sure that causes an audible issue though. But why do we care if the DAC is in the headphones otherwise?

Also, am I still the only one that uses earbuds? I love those 7$ Panasonic earbuds and I can't imagine getting a pair of "Lightning" headphones that cheap.

And yet nothing has come along that sounds anywhere near as good. Bluetooth sounds like shit.

If the whole point of them doing this is supposedly to make it thinner, why wouldn't they just use a 2.5mm jack.

This doesn't super affect me because I can count the number of times I've used headphones with my iPhone since I bought it on one hand with fingers to spare, but it sucks for everyone that does happen to use headphones.

Which is why it's going to bite them in the ass, This is not the thing to concentrate on or change. It's a mistake and you thinking that it's not important and nobody will care shows how clueless you are.

Which is way more people than you ever believe.

I can't believe you actually think this is an good idea.
