In the last 10 posts; is there an absolute reason that you would need to upgrade to the iPhone 7? If you need the 3.5mm port can't you just buy a phone that has it?

Might end up doing that. Have had an iPhone since the first iteration but this might be the straw.

Apple has made some infuriating hardware decisions the past couple of years.

I don't want to listen to something that sounds like it came out of a Napster download at 120 kph from the 1990's.

Bluetooth audio quality is trash.

I have expensive headphones that would all but be useless with this piece of shit.
Err... surely there's an adaptor they will include that allows you to plug in regular headphones. They're not gonna just ditch every headphone on the planet.

I'm on board if Apple makes the switch to USB-C instead of lightning.

They can fuck off with this if it's over lightning.
Aka fuck off Apple.

If they did bundle in Bluetooth headphones that charged via lightening it would also be compatible with the Apple TV remote.

Maybe by the time their updates make the 5 and 6 phones lose almost all functionality they'll have brought back the adapter for the 8.

I have a pretty big crack/dent on my iPhone 6 and would like to get a new phone eventually.

I like iOS and I have invested a decent amount of change into the software and apps on here.

Ugh. I guess I'll get used to it (if true), but aux connections are everywhere and so convenient. And I certainly don't need these things to be any thinner than they are.

And would this mean you can't charge and listen to headphones at the same time?

So, the people that already bought those ridiculously expensive Beats headphones will now need to shell out extra cash for an adapter or buy new headphones.

That's hilarious. Apple forcing the double dip with propritary connectors. Why is this a good thing for us consumers? Why is OP so excited about this?

People have to realise that the headphone jack is far from being the limiting factor of a phone's thinness. The battery needs space and it's why phone haven't really moved from 6mm-7mm thickness. I really don't understand why some phone makers are chasing after this. A phone thinner than 6mm is not going be to comfortable to hold nor it will have a good battery(unless it's width and height compensate). The 3.5mm headphone jack has been universal standard for decades and Apple could try not including it, but they should rule out me ever getting any of their products.

I'm sure that Apple will cause a giant fucking scene by removing something like the headphone jack without giving any thought at all to the super fucking obvious problem of "how do I charge it and also use my headphones".

Because that's what I want, more ugly cords and cables to lug around with me wherever I go.

Thanks apple for looking out for the consumer and having me buy more shitty adapters.

Maybe dual lightning jacks? Naw, they'll make you buy a $60 dongle.

I mean, their solution to "how do I sync my iPhone with my MacBook and charge my Mac at the same time" is to buy an $80 dongle

"We have a product for people like that, it's called the 6S."

How do you know it won't be included? I'm not cynical enough to think that it won't be. Macbook is bad precedent, though.

But, agreed on the extra cables/dongles stuff. Totally pointless and just more shit to carry/plug in.

On the wireless side - can you even use wireless headphones on flights?

I want to go back to the iPhone because I respect Apple's stance on encryption and user privacy. However they are making it very difficult.

Wireless is the future but we just aren't there yet. Unless Apple has a magical bio-organic battery technology that lasts a very long time.

I was being facetious, heh. Of course they'll have some kind of dongle. They always do. Dongles fucking everywhere. They have an entire section of their store dedicated to making their products compatible with everything else. I have a stupid dongle sticking out of my Macbook Air plugging it into a Cintiq and other people in my office have dongles sticking out of their laptops to they can use ethernet cables.

I didn't say it'll be cheap but it's fucking foolish as hell to think they would remove a universal standard like this without considering some kind of workaround for the millions of people that will need to adapt.

To be fair though you don't need any dongle at all to sync your i-anything to a Mac, you've been able to do that wirelessly for a good several years now.

Jesus the hyperbole is drowning me. Lug around? The adaptor will likely be less than two inches in length and will spend the majority of its time stuck to the bottom of the cable that you're already "lugging around" that's connected to your headphones.

Fuckin 'lug around' give me a break.

The Apple nuthuggers in this thread are baffling. But I guess there's always someone out there to defend any shitty anti consumer practice.

Of course not. People, who were apparently lookin forward to what the iPhone 7 could offer, are simply saying a decision like this would make it no longer an option.

I'm not exactly thrilled at the idea of losing the headphone jack and having to buy another fucking dongle but the hyperbole you're spouting is ridiculous so you shouldn't be alarmed you're getting called out on it.

wow lol. if you really can't handle losing the port then get another phone. the only person making you buy the iphone 7 will be you in the end. otherwise there is nothing to be angry about.

most people here aren't hugging nuts, they're just accepting that Company X is doing Y. woah!

Why are you inserting anger into his post? And there are absolutely people in this thread loving this change.

As an owner of an older car who uses one of the casette adapters, I guess I will be switching from apple to a different phone.

Comparing headphone jacks (which practically no one has a problem with) to Flash (which has always been a slow resource hog) seems a bit absurd.

Unless Apple's alternative can output uncompressed surround sound, I'm skeptical as to what the benefit is.

Have you read anything that Vire has posted? Anger doesn't need to be inserted man it's already there.

Or, you could just wait to see if this rumor is even real, and if it is, what solutions Apple plans to offer to the literally millions of people in the world that own wired headsets. (I'm not trying to sound condescending I've tried rewording this a couple times and it sounds dickish to me but I promise I'm not trying to be a dick!)

Not an Apple "nuthugger" I find the company particularly scummy and I make a point of never buying any of their over priced shite.

I just think it is about time we ditched a fucking connector that has outlived the damn RS232 port. If this was happening on Android (and hopefully it will) I certainly wouldn't have a problem with it. I haven't used the 3.5mm jack on the past two of my phones. To me the 3.5mm jack has had it's day and the sooner it is gone the better.

Yeah but what if I'm already used to the apple ecosystem. I've got loads of purchased music and apps on itunes. It not exactly convenient for people to just be forced to move to android.

well this is where it gets tricky. as someone who uses an iphone but barely uses any apps and buys music through physical (with only some digital purchases)...you come to a crossroad, where you potentially have to leave that stuff behind, or accept the loss of 3.5mm and get some wireless gear. for me this isn't an issue but i understand it is for some. i'll go wherever my needs are gonna be met, which right now equals not upgrading until i absolutely need to.

I'm confused on what the benefit to Apple this is. It seems like a gigantic bet on their part. People who have 3.5mm headphones/earbuds or aux hookups in their car are going to want to keep listening to podcasts and music, aren't they? If Apple outright removes their ability to do that without buying extra shit, then when time comes for them to upgrade from their 6, won't they choose an Android over a 7?

Of course the Apple cult will keep buying and praising everything they put out, but what about the average user? This just seems like Apple willingly ceding more market share to Android phones.

Didn't iTunes remove all DRM years ago? Can't you just jump onto iTunes, download all your purchased music, and then transfer it to your shiny new Android? How long could that possibly take, unless you have literally dozens of gigs of music or more.

for the average consumer, I don't think this would be enough for them to consider switching to android, especially if they are already heavily invested in the eco system. if there is an adapter that is either included or cheap, that will suffice.

obviously if Apple removed this jack they would be confident in that

I suppose we should wait for confirmation before tearing Apple a new one but this thread has gone way past that point lol

I'll also be bailing out, if the rumors are true. I've never been an Apple fan but I recently got a 6S and I do appreciate how well the hardware and software are integrated. That said I also have close to a thousand bucks of audio gear that I regularly use with the phone and if this connector BS is true then my next phone will most decidedly be Android or WP.

A lightning adapter would absolutely fucking suck, it adds bulk plus there's a chance of adding interference into the audio chain. Nope.

Then might we suggest waiting to see how this rumor pans out and what solution Apple will offer to the people who use wired headsets?

It's way too early to make any kind of a choice right now. Jump ship to Android, cry about charging wile listening to music, we don't know anything - we don't even know if this rumor will turn out true. Apple Watch was supposed to have more sensors in it but they dropped them shortly before release because of reasons.

Out of curiosity, how well is the MacBook selling? It basically did the same thing by removing ports for the sake of thinness. You could tell it's an experimental tier. If it doesn't sell well it'll be quietly discontinued or updated with 2 ports next time. Hopefully they don't test the waters with the phone and are using this feedback now to decide early on whether or not to do it. I feel the 6 is thin enough as it is. It really makes no logical sense to drop the port. This isn't some Parallel or SCSI port or an floppy, or rather optical drive. Hopefully this is just a silly rumor started by someone looking for traffic. We won't find out for sure until the real thing starts leaking as September gets closer.

Not a fan of this rumor if it's true. The phone is thin enough as is, I think this would be too restricting. Besides, I want my main pair of headphones to be all-purpose/useable everywhere.

I don't see the point of this from a consumer side of things. I like that I can use pretty much any 3.5 jack headphones, and it hooks easily to the aux port on my car. Going proprietary means losing comparability with the vast majority of all headphones and other applications, all for the sake of selling us yet another adapter.

IF they do this, they need a way of porting all the itunes music to android or other devices, so we can finally leave the apple series behind.

Personally, I wouldn't mind. I generally just carry around one set of headphones, so I would leave whatever adapter hooked up to that at all times.

I don't really need the phone to get any thinner, either, though.

Yeah totally. I think its way to early to overreact just based on a rumor. Personally I've never been happier with a phone as I am with the 6s, So I'm interested in what Apple has planned for the 7.
