what i want to know is will they include a new lightning-enabled headphone set in the box? I just hope apple doesn't think it can charge the same price and remove the headphones from the box because it's a really nice thing to have included.

People are confusing the lightning thing. Apple doesn't want you to use a proprietary hook up. They want you to use wireless headphones. They're just giving you lightning as the connected option.

So... should I just chuck my $200 headphones in the bin? Yeah, right.

Other than it being "ancient," what exactly is wrong with having a headphone jack?

I'd rather they not include earphones in the box - I'll always have a replacement on hand for the plasticky, tinny things Apple gives you.

Doesn't the iPhone already hook up to any Bluetooth headsets?

I'm not sure as I don't know many people these days with one, especially the latest ones, but making it bluetooth only could mean that you have to buy Apple bluetooth headsets if they wanted to.

My dog was murdered by a 3.5mm audio port and I will not rest until the standard is dead
Wireless = bluetooth in most cases for headphones, isn't it ?
And wired headphones = aux. Or so everyone thought.

This is just the first step in fixing this problem. Like I said, Bluetooth is awful. Things will get better.

So... should I just chuck my $200 headphones in the bin? Yeah, right.
First, you say $200 like it's a thing. Second, no, some people still use AOL.

Fuck wireless headphones, the Bluetooth in my car is finnicky as hell, why would I want that on my head?

Watch it still have a disgusting camera bulge after all this.

It doesn't hook up to any Bluetooth headset? What?

But wireless headphones are awful. You have to charge them (yeah great another battery to be worrying about) and sync them up each time you want to use them on a different device and the sound quality sucks. Plus they're more expensive.

This is just the first step in fixing this problem. Like I said, Bluetooth is awful. Things will get better.

The first step is to actually make wireless headphones I would rather use than aux, not to shove out a product without the ecosystem around it already established.

3.5mm jacks work for 99% out there, they are omnidirectional and (don't quote me on this one I'm not an expert) since even high-end headphones have 3.5mm plugs they also seem to perform just fine.

I don't see why they would need a replacement.

I mean as long as they package the adapter with the phone, then I suppose this is okay. It's still going to look pretty stupid if you have to have your headphones plugged into another little wire extruding from your phone, and Bluetooth headphones aren't anywhere near the level of quality where a device should be trying to push their usage, so I'm really not sure what Apple are going for here.

Unless they're also going to push the new Beats Wireless, with LIGHTNING Technology, that will also be able to be charged when plugged into the adapter alongside the phone... In fact, I reckon that's exactly what they'll do.

Yeah but in the meantime I have to use "awful" Bluetooth apparently?

I'll stay in the 20th in that case. Thanks.

Honestly though this just seems like some Chinese tech websites trying to get traffic.

Although I also wouldn't be surprised if 3.5mm is delegated to iPhone models with higher storage while lower storage models don't have it. That wouldn't surprise me.

This would be quite entertaining.

As an iPhone user since 2009: this is absolutely crazy and ridiculous, if true.

I get the idea of devices getting thinner and that at some point you need to drop older technology.

But, when it comes to thinness, well, the iPod Touch is 6.1 mm thin and it has an headphone jack. Unless the iPhone 7 is significantly more thinner, it must be possible to include a headphone jack.

And about dropping older technology: that's okay, if there's a new standard. But removing it and replacing it by something proprietary that other manufactures won't even be able to use? That's bad for the customer and competition.

First, you say $200 like it's a thing. Second, no, some people still use AOL.

What do you mean like it's a thing? I literally have a $200 pair of headphones that I've been using for 8 years. I love them to bits. Ironically, Apple products have always had pretty good sound quality and been a solid choice if you care about that in a portable device. I don't even know if it's currently possible to get wireless headphones with comparable sound quality to my headphones.

I'm not against moving away from a 3.5 jack eventually, but at the moment wireless technology doesn't seem adequate for this purpose and there isn't an industry wide push for a new connector. If this was new not Apple exclusive tech I would be more open. As is? Sounds retched. But whatever, this product isn't for me.

Apple absolutely do want you to use a proprietary hookup. They hate Bluetooth (correctly, as a standard it's a mess).

Apple will not invest any effort at all in making Bluetooth better. They will probably just dump it for a proprietary wireless protocol entirely within the next two years.

Apple are absolutely not aiming to sell more bluetooth headsets as part of this. They are aiming to sell Lightning port headphones. Anything else will just make their battery issues worse.

What do you mean like it's a thing? I literally have a $200 pair of headphones that I've been using for 8 years. I don't even know if it's currently possible to get wireless headphones with comparable sound quality.

It's not without a proprietary protocol, no (such as the one in the Sony Z5). Bluetooth's spec caps audio quality quite significantly.

Agreed.

Like sure I've got a lot of shit that uses the jack, but I'm not opposed to replacing it in lieu of a more advanced alternative that gives me similar options.

But the implication we just sort of need to suffer while they figure someone else out (if they ever would) is nuts to portray as a positive.

I'm all down with Apple moving the industry forward yet again, and this will no doubt end up being fine with the majority of people, but my issue is that it means Lightning is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

I can't imagine Apple pushing this if they're only going to phase-out Lightning in favour of USB-C on the iPhone 8. But I guess that was always a pipe-dream as it'll mean Apple giving up on lucrative MFi licensing fees on iOS hardware.

...hate me...
In a nicely packaged phone, must be a nice relief to engineering to get rid of a somewhat spacious jack and all that it involves, wiring and such. Don't forget that the jack is larger than the plug itself.

Makes it easier to waterproof, but also can potentially allow for a larger battery, or better speakers, etc etc.

I want to get some bluetooth buds this year because some classes of devices already require it anyway (like smartwatches).

I'm not gonna lie though, if I had a phone without the jack I'd keep an adapter handy, like on my keychain or something. Just in case. Surely there will be plenty of 1st and 3rd party options for that.

Thank God you will always have to have a powered headphone/earbud around, right.

Wanting the Aux port to go is one of the weirdest things I've seen on the internet. If it had more pro than cons, if be all in for a change, but as it is, having a Aux port is not hurting my phone in any way, as phones are already thin enough.

"The future"... Yes, I see...

I don't understand the fascination with removing choices unless there is a clear advantage.

I know you've championed removing SD cards as well, but personally I'd much rather add 64 or 128 GB at reasonable prices than pay what Apple thinks is reasonable to do so. I understand it's slower, but for media that doesn't much matter.

Unless there is a tangible advantage of removing the headphone port such as waterproofing the device, then why does removing it make your experience better? We can see in this thread that it will make the experience worse for many people. I own wired headphones that I like, bluetooth ones that are passable. I don't want a third type just because Apple decides it wants to wall in the garden even more and charge more.

Soooooo, I have to buy new headphones? Lol. AUX jack is awesome. Love that I can plug my phone into most cars and listen to music through it.

Do people hate good sound quality or something? Why remove the 3.5 jack?
Bluetooth has never been as good as just a standard jack. wtf. Why?

As someone who prefers a thicker phone and puts his iphone in an otter box day 1, making the phone thinner does nothing for me, I'd rather have an aux port.

Complete bullshit. And for what? Making the phone ever so slightly more thin? It's already thin enough!

I suspect Apple has hard numbers on how often the headphone jack is used. Perhaps it's one of those feature you think everyone use, but it's really just a few.

Heck, plenty of folks in this threat say Bluetooth audio is junk, but when I go to a shop Bluetooth speakers is all the rage these days. There has to be people buying them.

Why is this a good thing exactly? I'm guessing the only benefit is a slightly thinner phone, on the other hand you'll need to carry an adapter everywhere or be forced to use wireless headphones with all of their downsides.

What is the point of this? Is there something terrible about the standard 3.5mm headjack that I'm just not seeing? I mean if this was at least all the major electronic companies deciding on a new standard because the old one isn't up to snuff that'd be one thing, but this just screams 'proprietary Apple bullshit'.
Wait what? Who the hell asked for this?

Apple's stockholders.

Anecdotal evidence and all that but I live in a large city and I see mostly people listening to music through wired headphones.

They are the only company with the power to kill obsolete but widespread technologies (see the MacBook not having a normal USB port). Good on them. Headphones should be wireless in 2016, it makes zero sense especially since breaking the cord is the #1 reason why headphones fail so often. Do it Apple, but bundle a Bluetooth set with the phone.

This is a great idea... To help Android phones.

To be clear: I just switched from Android over to an iPhone in the fall and this is something that would have me switch back when it's time to upgrade. Upgrade my car stereo and my headphones? Peace out.

So I have to carry around a small expensive adapter Ithat won't be difficult to lose. FFS.

But your phone will be thinner!

And then the adapter will add back 5 times as much volume that was cut.

And the cases that are completely pointless but literally everyone uses will make the extra thinness impossible to notice anyway.
