2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Okay, thanks K.Jack.

A couple more things real quick, because I'm on the verge of getting something.

About the 800 Dell you suggested. I saw a video review that started out like 'if you want something for photography, this isn't it', before talking about how good it is with battlefield 4 on ultra.. I'm a little confused. How is 8gigs of ram (plus space for up to 16) not good enough for photography. I'll be doing digital painting and I just want to be certain it's a good choice for me... But if this isn't, then what exactly is? I saw that, and I'm thinking, isn't this laptop still leagues ahead of anything else design wise than anything 2 or 3 years before it that have been around for designers? What's the deal. You'd say it's sufficient right?

About the MSI and the battery difference to the dell. Is that battery life the estimation while gaming? I'm sure digital painting wouldn't drain as much battery as heavy gaming.. I think anyway. Why is the batteyr estimation so much lower than the dell, I wonder. Also, maybe unlikely is the MSI battery upgradeable? Or could I even get a second battery that I could keep charged and swap out if I needed?

Well, thanks again for all your help. I certainly need it.

I bet it's referring to the screen quality. The color gamut and accuracy is ok at best.
Also I think the Dell has a huge battery compared to other laptops, but I haven't checked in a while

Yeah they cut costs by using a less than premium IPS display.

Battery estimation is usually casual use. Neither would push past an hour of gaming.

So guys, I just bought a Yoga 900 as my laptop to play some casual games on the go (i have a big gaming desktop).

But I just saw this on slickdeals and it seems like an insanely good deal, and basically the same price as I paid for the Yoga.

http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-...5b59a66a8e48408ad0001&ven3=870901947265576058

I know alienware is usually over priced, but that's a crazy deal no?

Price is nice, but the screen is advertised as 220-nit, which seems way too dim.

I'd probably still take a GE62 instead, because of that.

Well, I'm thinking about getting it.

Would you be able to tell me how it compares to a BenQ monitor GW2750 (which I'm currently using)?

edit: Also, any recommendations for a blue tooth mouse? Never used bluetooth mouse, but I imagine it would be nice to have a free USB port on the laptop.
Having trouble finding an overwhelmingly positively reviewed one though.

edit: Found a few more people talking about the screen quality lacking in this laptop... But I need the battery life.
I feel like I'm going in circles and am back at square one. I want something with a screen decent enough to do art on with accurate color reproduction, with specs on par with this Dell Inspiron i7559-763BLK.. If the screen wasn't sub par, it would be perfect for me.. And it's a damn shame that the MSI doesn't have a bigger battery on it. 2 hours just doesn't cut it. I need something that promises closer to 4 or more..

Sigh.. I'm hopeless.

It doesn't compare, frankly.

The Acer V15 clocks in between 4-5 hours, Wi-Fi surfing.

Fine. As soon as I can.

Which is still a number of months. €1,500 to go.

After this number of months, Pascal may have been announced.

True. I'll keep the yoga I think. I can play cheap indie games on it no problem (FTL, Ys, etc), and have my desktop for bigger games.

I will say though, that thing alienware has to be able to use desktop gfx cards? That's amazing, and basically means you can use a gaming laptop for a long time.

After this number of months, Pascal may have been announced.
And how long will it take until we get a full fledged GPU of Pascal's equivalent in laptops? Afterall, we only got 980's in laptops starting in October, and how long was the desktop version already out? About a year?

Decided on the inspiron. After this was recommended to me, I recommended it to a friend of mine, and he bought it earlier. I saw the screen in action and it wasn't as bad as I had expected. It's a little muted, upping saturation helps, but it's not terrible, and the rest of the computer I'm sold on.

So I went into it, and went ahead and got an extra 8 gig of ram and another ssd for the spare slot. If I was going to spend another 300 on a computer to get a better screen, I may as well just get this, and if it's a problem, later get a 300 dollar portable monitor of great quality.

I might even check back alleys for experts who might hack in another screen, but for now, I think I'm going to be content.

Thanks for the help fellas.

edit: Picked up a blue tooth mouse, but is there anything else I ought to have? What kind of cases would you recommend? Backpack?

I bought XPS 15. While its not entirely for gaming, I think I should be able to play recent games on High-Mid setting.

Anyways any site to get awesome 4k wallpapers?

Man this fucking screen. Best shit I have bought in years.

But pascal will be so much better! It's a way bigger deal for laptops than desktops. That die shrink should help a lot with heat and power use, which is a huge limiting factor with laptops right now. If you're close, wait.

Okay so it looks like the expensive £1000 gaming laptop might have to wait a month or so. However I desperately need to upgrade to something right now as cheaply as possible as this current machine I'm using is kind of on its last legs.

My budget is £300 (strapped for cash at the moment). I found this one which with the cashback included looks like a steal at £240:

HP 255 G4 Laptop
AMD Quad-Core A8-7410 2.5 GHz
AMD Radeon R5 Graphics
4GB RAM + 1TB HDD

It's here: http://www.ebuyer.com/723847-hp-255-g4-laptop-p5t27es-abu

It's nothing amazing due to my budget being so low but it's a decent upgrade on what I have (now a three year old machine that's not even supported by ATI anymore since the Crimson driver update). You guys think this is decent for the price? Or could I get something better?

Alright, I'll try and be patient. I don't want to wind up disappointed if the initial launch for laptops are only "M" cards.

Pascal will probably drop in 6 months, next Summer.

It's a working laptop, that's my only opinion.

The GTX 980 was a one-off special, don't expect non-M cards again.

Picked up a new MSI GE62 2QF Apache 413. Found some at the local MicroCenter. $1200 for a 970m. Pretty much the cheapest I could find. So far so good. Cannot wait to use it some more.

Going to be a secondary gaming machine and development machine.

Nope, won't run modern games 720p let alone 4k, lol. Here's some benchmarks:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-R7-M270.139590.0.html
As you can see it's only moderately better than integrated intel video.
The processor is modern, but also of the U series. My 4 year old i7-2670QM performs better on benchmarks than it.
That said, not sure how good the price is. Just that it won't do wonders for gaming.

Just what i needed.
passing and going for my first build after all.

Got my XPS15 9550 just before the new year, and it was supposed to be delivered late this month! Guess Dell got a new batch produced, lucky me.

So far it is working great with a fresh W10 Pro install, which i am glad because i read there were plenty of early adopter's' issues(Apple FTW!). Besides a tiny ghosting on the UHD and the not so good battery life(~5.5 hours ime) due to NVME sleep bug, it is performing well for me.

I also used Intel XTU utility to adaptively down-volt my CPU voltages, set it once and forget about it. Helps with load temps by 10 degree Celsius, so yay, those with laptops do consider to use this handy utility.

A phone cam look of the UHD screen, finally Win laptops are in the same league as mobile phones for high ppi text!

Love the punchy colors and contrasty blacks it can produce.

Stumbled across this website - similar info as OP, but another resource nonetheless.

Tips for buying notebook with decent graphics

The more resources the better. I like the simplicity of their Firestrike chart.

BAH!

But the prices should drop after Pascal releases, right? I'm not sure if the mobile versions will have super resolution.

Think about it like this: The GTX 980 was originally going to be released as the GTX 990M, but Nvidia went with the desktop name for marketing purposes. It's just like how the 860M/960M are the desktop GTX 750 Ti. There's a section in the OP that breaks down what cards are what desktop cards:

But exactly what are the mobile cards, anyway?
I know a lot of perspective buyers of gaming laptop are coming from the desktop scene, and have little to no idea what the mobile GPUs names actually mean. After all, the GTX 670M has absolutely nothing in common or to do with the Desktop GTX 670. Most of these cards are indeed literally desktop chips, which have simply been undervolted and downclocked, to fit them within a viable mobile mobile TDP. So when I say that X = Y, know already that the card does not deliver 100% of its desktop analogue's performance, unless you are able to safely raise the voltage and achieve the reference desktop frequencies.

Nvidia Cards

GT 630M (which is a rebranded GT 540M, which is a rebranded GT 435M) = GT 430
GT 640M, 650M, 660M, 730M, 740M, 750M = GTX 650
GTX 670M (which is a rebranded GTX 570M) = GTX 550 Ti
GTX 675M (which is a rebranded GTX 580M) = GTX 560 Ti
GTX 760M, GTX 765M = GTX 650 Ti Boost
GTX 670MX, GTX 675MX, GTX 770M = GTX 660
GTX 860M, GTX 960M = GTX 750 Ti
GTX 680M = GTX 670
GTX 680MX, GTX 780M, GTX 880M = GTX 680
GTX 970M, GTX 980M = GTX 900 derived
GTX 980 = GTX 980

So, even the 'M' cards will be some desktop chip, regardless of name.

Having a good screen is such a pleasure.

My internet slouthing is telling me that you need to keep v-sync enabled.

Yep, that fixed the issue. Just two more questions.

Is PhysX really that demanding, or is Borderlands 2 poorly optimized? I'm playing with this settings:

Fullscreen
Vsync ON
Capped 72 FPS
1920x1080
Ambient Occlusion OFF
Depth of Field ON
Anisotropic Filtering 4x
Bullet Decals High
Foliage Distance Far
Texture Quality High
Game Detail High
View Distance Medium
Physx Effects Low
FXAA ON

I did some research, and draw distance and physx are the more demanding settings. I have around 60 fps, with drops to 40's. When there is a lot of fire it can drop to even 30's. The lowest I remember in some very demanding areas it dropped to like 25.
I'm playing on GT72S, these are my specs, game is installed on my HDD.

Should I change something in my Nvidia settings, or is just the game/physx effects?

Are there any way to connect a HDD with usb 3.1? I'm not talking about these "external" HDD. I'm talking about buying and HDD that you would use on your desktop, but connecting it to my laptop with usb 3.1

A 980m should be pretty similar to a desktop 780 in performance right? I have a 780 and remember borderlands 2 dropping a lot too with a lot going on. Draw distance was one of those things that hurt my framerate but I think I also disabled physx

Is the Geforce GTX 960M graphics card good enough for modern gaming or is the 970M a significant enough upgrade to justify a $100-300 price increase? I can't find a good deal for the 970M between $1000-1200

I run BL2 with everything maxed, PhysX on medium. When the elemental shots are splashing everywhere, the fps can tank hard. But outside of that, it's normally a locked 60fps.

1. The GTX 960M is a GTX 750 Ti, with slightly differing clocks. Literally.

2. The GTX 970M is a significant upgrade, nearly 2x as fast. If you can afford it, you take it.

Guy in post #4264 said he found the MSI GE62 at Microcenter for $1200, might want to check there as well. I went to the website, and sure enough, they still have that SKU in stock Jump on it!

Other options if that doesn't pan out:

MSI GE72 @ $1299

Gigabyte P55 @ $1249

NP8657-S @ $1399 <-- most expensive, but includes Skylake CPU, 16GB DDR4, and 120GB Samsung 850 EVO. Can be had as low as $1319, if you already have an OS, and $1,279.43 if you take the 3% cash discount.

Anyone here, from Canada, buy a dell xps 15 and manage to upgrade the ram? I'm thinking of getting the 1080p version but can't figure out how to get one with 16gb ram. Their website doesn't allow the option.

Unless Dell Canada does things differently, all 8gb XPS15 comes with 1 stick of ram, you will have an open ram slot to add your own 8gb stick to make it 2x8gb. Although it will involve unscrewing a number of tiny screws to access the back panel.

CES should bring some new laptops or at least skylake updates.

Gigabyte and Aorus are probably going to update their product line.

I really want to see MSI update the GS70 with a better screen.

So a gaming laptop which I can use for everyday browsing, etc has been on my mind for a LONG time. I'm finally in a place career wise and financially where I can drop $2k on one and I've really narrowed it down to the ASUS G752VY-RH71. I really don't think over $2k is worth it, so that's kind of my hard cap.

Below are the specs, and this includes the IPS displays with G-Sync

Intel® Core™ i7-6700HQ Processor
· NVIDIA® GTX 980M 4GB GDDR5
· 16GB DDR4 RAM

My question for GAF is...does anyone have one of these? All of the reviews I've seen say it's amazing and the vapor cooling is top notch. I'd also most likely buy myself a docking station and display it onto my 2 monitors (although that then voids the G-Sync aspect). I've seen all benchmarks for the 980M and it seems pretty solid, like I would be well off for years to come.

Here's a link to where I would buy it, it includes 3% cash back: http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-g752vyrh71-eta-nov-2015-p-8768.html

I have all 3 gaming consoles and do in fact need/want a laptop but I work in tech and just can't get a bare bones piece of trash, so I'm looking at a minmum of $800 for decent specs, but have convinced myself that at that price point I may as well pony up more and get something I've always wanted. I have a decent gaming PC (overclocked i5-2500k, 2xGTX570's in SLI, 16gb memory) but feel like this could satisfy all of my needs.

I do wonder about longevity; would using this every other day as a regular PC (i.e. if I decide on docking station or just to carry around) kill it slowly? Have never delved too far into purchasing one.

Hello LaptopGAF, I'm in dire need of a new laptop, since I feel like it's time to finally upgrade as my current 4-year old university one is on its last legs, and I sure could use some help from some knowledgeable folks.

Country: Portugal
Budget: 500-750 euro
Max size: I have no specific requirements
Planned Usage: Maybe I'm asking too much for the budget I have in mind, but I would like to be able to play Dark Souls 3 and AC: Syndicate in 1366x768 (30fps). Maybe SW:Battlefront too, if possible at all? (I'm guessing not). Either way, according to the previous games minimum system requirements it seems like 8GB Ram is a must.

Links: FNAC, WORTEN. I could only find two major technology focused retailers with a decent website. However, specific laptop suggestions that aren't present in either link are also welcomed.

Well bought an MSI GT72 2QD and already have an issue. I installed dota 2 and it is almost unplayable due to random ms spikes, the usual ms is 75 but during gameplay and especially combat it jumps to 200 there is also a 10-20% loss, the game freezes a bit for around 2-5 seconds, the game becomes practically unplayable. It is definately not the ISP or valve's servers because after 2-3 games with this issue I used my brother's laptop and the game run just fine internet was really stable with same router, same ISP different laptops though. I also have to say the fps remains stable always no drops. Anyone has any clue what that may be or can help?

Thanks. Are you able to just have dell do it for you? Can't see the option on there website.

Maybe you fine people can help. Im downsizing so I am getting rid of my gaming laptop but I dont know what a good price to sell it at is. I am hoping you guys can help.

Here are the specs:

yeah uh are you sure you really need a gaming laptop? A gaming desktop and a proper laptop is a much better use of that budget. Check the OP for more details.

Got the dell Inspiron.
Did a fresh install of windows.

Great battery life. Had it cycling YouTube videos for maybe 3 hours while I updated drivers and downloaded programs, and it still had 65 percent battery at the end of the night.

After attempting to install new ram and ssd, I had a boot screen mentioning memory had changed.. Clumsily went to diagnostic where it was beeping extremely loud and flashing colors. I thought I killed it.

Then I hard reset it, it did some strange system update and had fans at max.

Now I'm the proud owner of a bouncing baby boy! Er, laptop!

Colors are definitely off from my other monitor, the purples aren't as deep. That said, it seems whiter than my other monitor which appears blue in comparison. It's not bad. It'll do fine.

One surprising feature is that while in steam, I saw that I could play any of the steam games installed on my other PC, through streaming. It worked reeaally well, with a hickup here or there. Didn't know about this.. So as long as my PC is on at home, no matter where I am, I should be able to stream games from it. Neato. Just not sure how I can make sure my PC isn't sleeping at home when I want to play. Hm.

Bluetooth mouse works really well. Happy about that.

Yaaaay.

MSI GT72S is just a better laptop. I'd at least consider this one. The extra gets you a 980M with 8GB VRAM, and an unlocked, overclockable CPU.

I'd honestly consider taking this deal.

Always a good way to start, is to reinstall/update your Nvidia and Intel drivers, including the chipset driver.

Maybe you fine people can help. Im downsizing so I am getting rid of my gaming laptop but I dont know what a good price to sell it at is. I am hoping you guys can help.

Any help would be appreciated!

What laptop is it, and is there still any warranty left?

Yaaaay.

Nice. Keep us updated with your ongoing impressions.

Yeah don't worry I figured out what was wrong. It was the router for some reason, I tried my super old router and boom internet was like normal. Dunno what caused the laptop to not work well with my router though.

Well my old Clevo finally died! 4.5 years of very hard labour, not a bad innings. It was a Horize P150HMA (same model as the Sager NP8150). I have a great desktop rig now, so I'm after something a little lighter on the laptop side this time. I've pretty much settled on this, which I can get a great deal on through work:

http://www.metabox.com.au/store/b186/Metabox-Alpha-N150RF-Laptop

- 15.6" FHD IPS Matte
- Nvidia GeForce 965M Ver:GR
- Core i7-6700HQ

So I don't need technical advice, but I do have questions for people who have owned Clevos in the past few years. My greatest complaint with the P150 was the keyboard. It had really poor action (shallow movement with hard landing) making it painful to type on for any length of time. I've heard that this has improved with each generation. But I've just read this review of the Schenker N150SD, and with what they say about the keyboard, case finish and many other small details, they could easily be describing my old P150...

Is there anyone who has owned more than one Clevo in the past four years, who can comment on how the design has evolved?

Guys I'm getting excited about the next gen of mobile graphics cards. I was reading about amd's new offerings and it sounds incredible for normal sized laptops that won't run out of battery in an hour or heat up to the temperature of the sun. This could be a huge game changer.

Found an Alienware 17 with a GTX 970M, FHD screen, and 8GB RAM at a local pawn shop for $1000 (includes tax), wondering if it's a good buy?

EDIT: Has a manufacture date of October 2015

That sounds like a good deal? Any cosmetic damage? What processor is onboard.

Spelling for myself, I'd bite if the same model was more expensive directly from Dell.

I think it's the base model for the 17

And no cosmetic damage, looks pretty much new lol. I have it on layaway.
