The Fighting Game Noob Thread: From Scrub to Master

BTW, if anyone ever wants to send me links to videos for critique, I'm happy to do that stuff on my stream/YT channel. I don't check neogaf that often so twitter is probably your best bet (@pattheflip).

Go-to games are pretty much any Capcom stuff, Rising Thunder, and Guilty Gear.

These won't be done in matches? A lot of I-No's are pretty practical. And many teach how you to play the character and take advantage of normals. Honestly, XRD has one of the best challenge modes I've seen in a fighting game.

I'm not talking GG in general. I'm talking the mission modes in all fighters.

I get up to:

zfMmRol.jpg

And then my brain is like "Yeah... no. BYE! *takes off for the Bahamas*"

The only reason I'm not up to that one yet is because I'm struggling at getting wall-climb or whatever on #11

For fighters, sure. But they're still good for practicing execution even if they're impractical, and in the case of GG the challenges in my experience aren't impractical so far. Although I haven't done Chipp's yet.

Fantastic post. Continuing from that line of discussion, since it's in the same family, let's talk about mentalities surrounding info gathering:

How does everyone here do it and what are techniques to increase you skill with it?
I try something that I know is escapable/punishable over and over again until they adapt. If they can figure out that what i'm doing isn't that good then I'll try more and more.

On defense, I see how they approach and what they do on my wakeup. Try to see what patterns they fall into as well.

I couldn't do the last few of chipp's trials when I first tried at launch, but after awhile and getting a feel for the character in matches I finished then up with no trouble. Sometimes getting a feel for how a character plays in matches can help. Doing combos before that is difficult for me. Especially in GG.

You're gonna have fun with the jump installs (I'm stuck at challenge 31). Chipp is hard ;_;

Just found the Steam GAF group. Also, I'm thinking about getting Xrd on Steam. I know Revelator is around the corner. Anyone recommend the Steam version?

It's a good port, there are also a lot of new players playing right now. Revelator doesn't have any character changes so most things you learn will apply.

I started playing Potemkin yesterday and going through all the missions and combo challenges, i'm having a great time with him. I must block and try to figure out what to do next with him. I'm getting my ass kicked online though but i win sometimes. I try not to do super hard combos with him and i try to get his anti air grab to land as much as i can. Anyone in EU who wants to fight? I have a imported copy so i am on version. 1.04.

Also.@Oneida what day can we play some VF5FS? I'm free all weekend :)

I can't even figure out the Wall Cling or whatever mode in #11.

"While near wall 46"

"Okay, that's simple enough. *jump and 46*"
NOPE. NADA.

"On the ground? But that doesn't make sense.gif!"

If you want to stick to the Wall on the right i think it is forward and then really fast backwards.

I just mashed 4646464, then I tried to do it a little more cleanly every time until I was good.

That did it. It's really funky timing. It's literally 864 if you throw Sol in that mission. I couldn't figure out how to do it on the left/player-facing-right side. But I guess that isn't a hard-wall for the game to consider?

Analyze/criticize my scrubby performance please (PS4 - DoA Rachel):

To preface this: I definitely know I need to learn more of Rachel's BnB combos, stop dropping combos, hitting the wrong buttons, and stop being so predictable/mix things up.

1) Vs. Ein - I won this match but I've faced this person twice earlier in the same night and finally got a W (Barely, at that). Even though I won this one I'd like some feed back.

2) Vs. Mila - I can't remember the last time I fought a Mila so I'm very unfamiliar with this match up.

3) Vs. Hayabusa - This one is literally my worst match up, along with Sarah, and I never know what to do/how to react to his teleport stuff other than block. I was able to avoid his teleport grab by crouching, but that would leave me open for his teleport overhead, no? (At least I think I saw one in this replay. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

You did not do too bad and your punishes and combos are pretty much what you need to do.

1. Ein's game plan is punishing and knocking you back. That is his game plan, as a result you throwing out our ranged attacks was the right tact, also if he whiffs get a launch if you can and always poke him out, you used that kick properly and you played it as well as a beginner Rachel could.

2. Mila is very fast and has her parries therefore you do the midrange game with her and get your juggles and keep poking with that kick. Use your ranged and your lows to open her up then do combos that keeps her away and keep her out.

3. Tommy is a funny thing, for the teleports, side step them he will leave himself open then you OPEN him up. You can crouch some but you are best served side stepping them they don't track and leave him open. When you know when that dumb shit is coming you can actually knock his ass out the air. With Lady Kstoute I can air grab him out of it , with Ayane I can kick him out of it. For Rachel just sidestep and punish him with a launch into her throw.

Tonight for some reason I'm feeling I hate pad out of nowhere.

I'm playing GGXrd and I find pad uncomfortable all of a sudden. Tonight it just feels unnatural how I have to grip the handle but do intricate motions with my thumb. I played stick last week at my local and while it was rough at first, certain motions just felt right and natural using my entire wrist/hand/arm rather than just my thumb.

I'm just really frustrated tonight. It especially doesn't help I didn't get the stick I wanted. I dled Xrd costume packs and for some reason despite closing my game and ejecting my disc multiple times they don't show up. I'm just really frustrated. It's times like that when it's best to turn it off while you're ahead.

Stick/pad it's all mental. If you get a psychological hang up because no stick or you feel pad is meh it will effect your play. It's 100% what you prefer. But have to get your mind right. People say this is a mental game.

Thanks for the tips! Good to hear that I somewhat know what I'm doing with Rachel. I'll be putting hours into training mode this weekend though.

I'm assuming the kick you kept referring to was the forward -> forward -> K one?

The very same 66 K use it as a good space tool if you have the right space to keep them out. Also be mindful if they mash counter because you can free cancel and throw punish them and with Rachel it's really damaging.

Watch from round 2 onward look how he holds, look how I throw punish him.

I've picked up on throw punishing as well, which throw in particular are you referring to? I just tap throw immediately as soon as I see them whiff a hold.

I also fall victim to counter holds as well, Alpha's is really punishing with the damage it does, learned that the hard way.

Yeah this is true. I have a love/hate relationship with pad and stick. One day I think I'm sticking with stick the next I feel I should become a full time pad player. But it's really just me blaming my execution errors on my controller of choice then switching back and forth lol.

Anyways, new Chun Li vid.

Please critique and all that.

I have trouble pulling off my ultra outside of a combo. Any time I have my ultra and I have back + mk I'm trying to bait for an ultra. I can only reliably hit my ultra out of two or three combos. How can I use Kikosho in a more free form manner to get some W's?

It would be nice to see input display if you could next time. Near the end of the first round it seemed like you got somewhat flustered. You kept dashing away and probably mashing buttons which ended up getting you knocked down over and over allowing the Gen to land three counter hits in a row into a combo and taking the round. Sometimes the best option is just block. Especially since the Gen was just jumping in and doing cr. LK.

Second round was fine since you use Chun Li's normal and he just walked right into him. A lot of weird walk/dash up grab attempts which ended up getting stuffed by a normal in general but ended up getting you in trouble in the third round where he landed his super and ultra. If you had just blocked after his ultra (instead of trying to dash away) you could've gained your health back and maybe caught him slipping since he'll be on the offensive.

-Practice blocking
-Try not to press buttons if you're on defense
-Be careful randomly throwing out Hazanshu since they're punishable.

Yes, workworkwork.

Out of all the FG's I play MKX is my best skill level wise. I've put in god knows how many hours into practice mode there and it paid off. The sad part of mk is that no matter how good your timing and execution is, in most matchups online the input delay from the ass netcode will scupper your hard work.

MKX just didn't click with me. I play all fighting games but man, MKX I just could not get into. Combos felt off, conversions felt awkward and for some reason, I had crap execution.

I don't play either character but a few things;

1st round you lost because you were pressing too many buttons instead of just blocking which gave him many counter hits. Gen's throw range isn't the greatest so you shouldn't be too worried about him throwing you from such a distance. Also, AA'ing Gen is as hard as it looks, his really short jump arc makes timing AA's especially with Chun really difficult so I can't really fault you there.

At the end of the 2nd round, you tried to do a meaty fireball but threw a heavy one that went right past him. Go into training mode and knockdown the opponent a few times and get a feel for the timing of throwing fireballs on their wakeup.

You hit him with a lot of st.HP's, if you can hit confirm it, you can super right after for extra damage. I think Gen has like 900HP so it goes a long way against him.

Gen is really tricky to block on wakeup because of how ambiguous his jump-ins are, so I can't really fault you for getting hit by a lot of cross ups.

I got toasted in the first round because of the cross up. First one caught me off guard, second one I didn't think he'd do it again, third one is blocked, and he was going to continue an onslaught and I thought I was just blocking but for some reason my defense opened up and I lost.

I have to admire your tenacity to just walk up to people and punch them in the fucking face lol..you hold forward A LOT.

There was one point in I think round 2 where I walk up. I was gonna throw him. But my brain misfired for some reason and I didn't do it and got pushed back.

Hitting back has rarely ever worked out for me. Pushing forward forces people to adapt or die. Plus there's a mind game/psychology element. You have no idea what I'm gonna do. I might walk up and press st HP and punch you in the face. I might take it and instead of that I just walk back and watch you whiff. I might walk up and sweep if I see an opportunity, or I might throw an fb, do a hazenshu. After I condition them to block on my approach, I walk up naked without defense (like an fb) and throw their ass.

Fuck em.

An example (plus rage quitter) is shown here:

http://youtu.be/j0VoO2Kx2A4

I need to work on my offense so I can get that Vivi corner game tho.

I feel there's certain motions that would be easier for me on stick, and vice versa. An example being for Yun it's harder for me to do c.mk to shoulder, because it'd hard for me to do down to dp motion.. I feel this would be easier on stick, while 360s and 720s would be easier on pad..
