Desert Vista High School students spell out racial slur on t-shirts

Why do people feel the need to cuddle racists from their actions?

There's a big fat line between "cuddling" and "internet mob justice". It shouldn't be that hard to decipher.

They should be shamed for their actions. I'm fine with that. But it's not up to random dudes on the internet to dole out punishment. It should be painfully obvious why.

As long as we don't throw every racist teen into the wood chipper for their racism then I think we can find a middle ground between "destroying their future lives" and "making excuses for them".

There's zero utility to blowing up their entire lives, it will only drive them further into their hatred.

Of course, I've always said that the onus is on their white peers and adults to guide their education. It can't but up to the oppressed to educate their oppressors.

Did I say anything about them being thrown in the wood chipper?
I didn't say shit about destroying their futures, you on the other hand seem to be hand waving their actions with whole "stupid kids" nonsense that keeps popping up in here.

You didn't answer my question. Do you think they didn't know what the word meant.

That's a pretty hateful pic to be smiling and laughing about.

Tough one - I'm fine with them being called out on it, but the wrath of the internet is too great a punishment, especially with their names now being known.

On the flipside, I find it funny that people get riled up when somebody points out their stupidity. Guess what? If you didn't do stupid, hateful things like this, nobody would be posting your stupidity on the internet.

How can you get mad at someone for something YOU did? It's not like lies are being told about you.
To add to this, they were obviously going to put it online. They thought it was funny. They wanted to have a laugh. They wanted the attention..

They got it.

Growing up in Arizona and knowing the area that they grew up in, which is predominately white, I find it very likely they did not know the true meaning of that word.

Haha, anybody that thinks this is bad must've lived a very sheltered life. This is fucking childs play compared to the shit I've seen. As a white guy that grew up in a poor, mostly black neighborhood I've seen some shit. Black, white, and hispanic people constantly being racist to each other but never really in a violent way (at least not usually). Just a bunch of trash talking that obviously included a bunch of racial slurs of all varieties and ended with jokes and just fun times all around.

Point is, who the fuck cares? Who looks at these dumb teenage girls spelling out a word that they don't even understand why it could be seen as offensive by the dumb dumbs? Literally every black person I know would just laugh at this shit and more importantly the people being offended by it. Then again, I don't really know many people from the suburbs or high class neighborhoods. My understanding is those people are more often easily offended and also secretly racist.

Ahhh we finally got the black folk and other minorities are the real racists post

I wonder if these girls will be making one of those sorority videos next year? Oh wait they probably aren't getting into colleges now. Well done you stupid kids.

Man oh Man am I glad social media didn't exist when I was in High School. if it did, half of my school would have probably been suspended.

First off, there were plenty of people in this state who were against that dumb law.

Secondly, that law was nothing more than a political statement to get the Federal Government to pay attention to the horrible conditions of the border at that time. And it worked.

Clearly not enough people in positions of power were against the law. Tea Party presence is strong in the state as well. This isn't exactly Southern California or Washington state as far as progressive ideology goes. I went to the rallies against SB 1070 and it was basically 90% Mexican descendants and Native American tribes and 9% cops. The latter which, if you keep up with local news in this state, were the thugs who instigated violent action against protesters and members of press on the ground.

Also, your ends justify the means hand waving of the severity of the issue is bull-fucking-shit. Our uppity shit head Sheriff and other state offices were detaining people for no goddamn reason. The shit was in progress.

what does Arpaio have to do with drafting legislation?

It paints a picture of the state of racial affairs in AZ. Joe is one part of it.

So two thoughts:

One:
Can't wait for Jon Ronson to pick this up and add it to a new edition of his book and turn these racist girls into the "actual victims". It'll probably end up as example 15 of 17 of PC/Outrage Culture Run Amok

Two:

Today on Gaf I've learned that at 14 you're old enough to be responsible for luring men in for sex but not old enough at 17 to be racist.

It was not ends justifying the means, it was more you are overselling the amount of racists in this state which I take serious issue with.

I have not hand waived their actions in the slightest, nor have I excused them by claiming they're 'stupid kids'.

Of course they know what the word means. If the word were innocuous to them they wouldn't have done what they did.

I'm just against this idea of "they're beyond education". That is all.

i grew up IN that area. attended THAT high school. i sure as shit knew what that word meant before senior year.

agreed, i just thought it was a little out of left field as people tend to dogpile on AZ as if it's this giant non-stop klan rally.

That's possible sure. If they don't watch tv, news, movies, internet in general, or get on social media...

I don't care how white it is where you live, you know not to say that word. Period.

Now we can argue they didn't know just how serious using that word is, sure. Even that is a stretch though because of tv, news, movies, internet in general and social media.

It's a fucking photo. I'm not going to let this photo define the character of the people involved in the same way I don't allow a photo of a black teen throwing a gang sign define them.

Stupid kids. People made "funny" words with their senior shirts at my old high school as well but nothing racist. Them uploading it was fucking dumb though.

Today on Gaf I've learned that at 14 you're old enough to responsible for luring men in for sex but not old enough at 17 to be racist.

i said damn

Because arguing that the word is just slang is so ignorant it borders on racism on its own

He's probably talking about "nigga" being used casually.

Because arguing that the word is just slang is so ignorant it borders on racism on its own

...But it really is just slang now, for the most part? I'm referring all of this to the post I responded to, which was white people saying nigga. Obviously nigger is more often used for derogatory purposes, but I'm just talking about the use of the first one.

how exactly is a gang sign (which most of the time is really just a middle finger or some other innocuous hand gesture) remotely comparable to racism? to go another step, one can easily attest the predominance of black youths IN gangs as a byproduct of institutionalized racism keeping black communities in poverty.

Ah I misunderstood your intentions. Earlier in the thread I had already said Arizona isn't as bad as people make it out to be. There is a lot to like about this state, but there would be a lot more to like about it if it went blue. Maybe some year soon.

But then I'm not a minority and I'll admit I have a completely different perspective.

That's why my initial point was that Southern AZ is very different from central and northern

still sucks though

Yeah I plan to move to North Arizona. It's the only way to live here as far as I'm concerned. But ideally I'd like around Seattle. I love the rain.

What are you talking about?! Nigger is only used for derogatory purposes, unless the word is being discussed. People who aren't black shouldn't be saying nigga either.

You threw out the same "stupid kids" argument that a whole lot of people have done.

You wrote:
Educate them on the meaning of the word and have them apologize.
So you clearly thought they didn't know the meaning of the word.

Still racist...

You got all kinds of people telling you it's not okay. There isn't some equilibrium to reach here when you push back and say 'well my white friends say ninja as a hilarious substitute for nigger, that's just wacky slang, right?' It pays to listen to actual black people in this case, and you got plenty in this thread shaking their heads so hard it's drying your hair.

Oh fucking please they're getting what they so deserve. I hope they live miserable lives for now on.

I can't co-sign this. I mean, punishment yeah, but miserable forever? Come on man. I was a completely different person is so many ways when I was in high school, so perhaps chill a bit.

i suspect the first time AZ goes blue there will be a strong backlash against it (read: more vague racism at brown people) and it'll go right back to red in the following major election.

literally

When I was a kid it was "that's so gay" or "you're such a jew" that were incredibly common. No, they're not "just slang." No, white people don't get to say it just because black people have reclaimed it and reappropriated as a greeting amongst themselves in order to take away some of its power as a racial slur, because whites were the ones who made it so in the first place.

Do you think the more you say the word or the more common it is, the less offensive and barbed it becomes? Do you think that "ignorance" is really an excuse when we all know exactly where it comes from and how hateful its origins are?

?

Weather aside Tucson is the bluest part of the state, and Northern AZ has quite a bit of conservative Mormon creep from its proximity to Utah. Love the weather in Flagstaff, tho.

Sorry wasn't talking about politically. I just can't stand the desert period. Northern Arizona is too beautiful.

Growing up in Arizona and knowing the area that they grew up in, which is predominately white, I find it very likely they did not know the true meaning of that word.

I posted this earlier.

I believe this school is in the southeast valley here in AZ. I used to attend HS further East and I can tell you I definitely faced racism. It's Mormon/Christian land in many of those parts. I've seen confederate flags every so often. Some people in school would call me Jose (my name is not Jose). They'd ask me when I could go do some landscaping for them. A couple goofs would laugh at me just for speaking... They said I had an accent... I have no accent. I had a better grasp of English than most white kids. But they laughed.

These girls... Racist? Yeah, I'd say so
.

It's all good; I think I was just confused because the guy you were responding to was talking about Southern AZ (Tucson, lbr) being politically different from Central (Phoenix + suburbs) and Northern (Flagstaff + southern Utah).

I can't stand the weather down there either. Sooooo glad I only visit once a year, and usually in December. :p

Yeah kind of went off topic there. My point was there is a lot to like about the state, but probably not so much when it comes to politics. The scenery being one of them.

I've got the reverse situation here where I usually make it up North once a year just to see the snow!

It's a fucking photo. I'm not going to let this photo define the character of the people involved in the same way I don't allow a photo of a black teen throwing a gang sign define them.
May God bless you and yours, special child. Celebrate him, brothers and sisters. Do not shun him. He needs our combined strength to pull him through this time of darkness..or idiocy. Meh..
