because i'm an enormous smash fan, and would have much preferred that the system I bought to play smash bros actually gets all the smash bros.
Wasn't the NX itself announced at an investor meeting? As far as console specifics, nothing more than general stuff like "it's a handheld" "it's a home console" or something in between. I doubt we'd get specific console features, but it's possible.
It's unfortunate, sure, but if this helps out nintendo and paves the way for more smash bros in the future, in the end it's all good. *shrug* I can see how it would suck if you werent interested in the NX, though. My main theory is that we'd get characters not POSSIBLE on 3DS/WiiU for hardware reasons (mainly 3ds), but who knows.
You can always just think of it as a 'new' smash bros? I mean, no one got upset when brawl came out for wii and not gamecube, right? Yeah, shorter time difference, but it'd still be 2 years, which is more time than a lot of games get between releases nowadays.
Also, what if it's offered at an extreme discount, or even free, to people who bought the old versions of smash bros or something?

Best not to expect it seeing as it will replace both handheld and console, and the handheld surely won't be playing Wii U discs.

- The Legend of Zelda (Wii U port with bonus)

It's just, I wouldn't have bought smash bros if I would have known that it was all in service of funding the "real" version of the game on the next system. Shit, I probably wouldn't have bought a wii u. Fuck me, I guess.
I mean, if it was a new smash bros I would be much more forgiving. I'd be incredibly skeptical of the quality of the game, but it wouldn't mean that I just spent $60 + DLC money on a game that is rendered obsolete less than a year after support ended. If it's a definitive edition port of the game with significant differences, then yeah, I'll feel like the money I spent up to this point was generally a waste.

Smash 4 NX complete edition port would make a ton of sense. Use Wii U version as a base, maybe include some content from 3DS, maybe throw in a new character or two, and voila. I know I'd eat that shit up at least.
Speaking of Namco ports, I think Pokkén Tournament is also a likely candidate to be ported to NX, given that it is a multiplayer focused title that is releasing basically on the Wii U's deathbed. And given that TPC wants to support Pokkén going forward with the Pokkén World Championship, leaving it on the Wii U would be detrimental to that game's competitive future, probably not something TPC wants..

eShop includes Wii U, you know. It's not some magically distinct platform, it's just Wii U (and 3DS) games that are being distributed digitally.
