2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Is it a good idea to spend $35 extra for thermal cooling? Also, what's the difference between these two types of screens:

*15.6” FHD 16:9 LED Backlit Wide screen (1920x1080) Super Clear Matte Type Screen

*15.6” FHD 16:9 IPS LED-Backlit Display with Matte Finish w/ G-SYNC Technology (1920x1080)

The second is $80 more.
Uh...G-Sync? It says it right there.

The latter has superior viewing angles (IPS) and Nvidia's adaptive sync technology (G-SYNC). For an extra $80 that's definitely worth it.

I'm just gonna bite on this.

I have no beef with that.
Hi, my friend wants to get a Lenovo laptop/tablet-hybrid thing for university. I only know desktops so am not familiar with what's considered a good price.

She'll be using it for stats packages like SPSS and Stata. The usual pics and film functionality too. Has to be Windows 7. Large HDD space.

her friend is using this one
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00TLMV2J6/

but that looks about £200 too expensive and waaaaaaaaaay underpowered.

edit:

Country where it will be purchased. UK
Maximum budget. £400. £600 at a push
Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight). No lo se. So long as its portable
Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all). Ideally you'll point out what resolution and settings are your standard, based off of what I've laid out in the OP. No gaming. Stats packages and HD films.
Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc. Windows 7 or ability to have it installed afterwards.

I'd just focus on portability and battery life.

1. No

2. $80 is a steal for IPS and G-sync

Hey guys, I'm looking for a new laptop, I play most games on my home PC so I'd be fine with it just running indie titles.

The thing is, my current laptop is an HP and my experience is awful, after 3 years it overheats, the front is falling apart, there's tons of ghosting on the screen, it takes forever to boot... So for my new laptop I'm looking for something quiet, well built, with at least 1080p resolution and 500Gb of space, I know the last one usually ramps up the price so I'd be willing to go down to 256Gb if it's worth it. Something like the new Razer Blade Stealth or the Surface Book looked nice. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Thanks!

Hi all! So I am in the market for a gaming laptop. I currently work as a marketing assistant while also finishing my last semester of college. I've been told that I probably will be travelling often so my Asus G75VW has to go (too heavy). My boss told me that they could either give me a regular 600-800$ laptop or I could bring mine to work, since I am not willing to suffer through an underpowered machine at work.

What would you recommend? I need something relatively low profile for work (nothing garish) but powerful since I also want to buy a monitor, keyboard and mouse for desktop use at home. I saw the 14" Full HD Razer and something like it would make a lot of sense to me.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: 2000 is as far as I go with my budget!

Heya. I'm replacing my laptop of 4+ years. I'll be using it mostly for school work and general use, along with some specific programs, as well as to play mostly indie games. Weight, speed, and the ability to run UE4 are my key wants. I've laid out my specific preferences thusly.

Country where it will be purchased.
Norway

Maximum budget.
7500 NOK / $850

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight). Screen and size is whatever.
Weight needs to be below 2.0, preferably around 1.5-6. The lighter, the better.

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all).
General use, school work, Unreal Engine 4, Unity 5, Adobe Photoshop, Maya, standard music software, Dark Souls 3 (ideally), SOMA, indie titles.

Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc.
Windows 7, ideally a quiet fan, minimum 4-5h battery

I'd love to get some spec details, especially regarding Unreal Engine 4, so I can search some on my own. My brother did some digging for me and suggested Multicom Talisa U731 with the following features, below budget cap:

No operating system
13.3" Full HD LED 1920x1080 16:9 Matt IPS screen
Intel HD Graphics 520, DirectX12 compatible
6. gen Intel Core™ i5-6200U prosessor 2.3GHz ~ 2.8GHz, dual core (onboard)
8GB DDR3 1600MHz SO-DIMM RAM
256GB SSD
Aluminium Ultrabook
7h battery life
1.4 kg w/battery, 18mm

Appreciative of all the help I can get. Cheers.

Both are nice, if not overly expensive. Flip a coin?

I'd go GS60

How CPU bound is your work? That ULV dual core could be a major bottleneck.

Hi
How is the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501 (skylake version) compare to the MSI GS60 in terms of portability and battey life?

Skylake GS60 has 5-6 hours battery life.

Price is insane.

Looks like an unbranded MSI GT70.

They are expensive, I've been thinking about it and that's Macbook Pro price territory, but I can't find anything with a good/premium build quality for under 1500€ that doesn't have any major flaws.

Me? If I had the dough, I'd go Surface Book.

The green font of the Razer would wear on me.

My schoolwork? Not at all. But I will be using Maya, Unity, UE4 and programming software a lot for hobby work, and possibly software development later on, so specs capable of handling all three is necessary. I'm not chained to my brother's recommendation, so anything within budget range is ok. I might be able to push my budget to 10000 NOK / $1000-1100 if the pricing is a bit tight.

Edit: As for me mentioning I want to play Dark Souls 3 on it, never mind that.

It surprised me too. And yeah it looks like one of those chassis that MSI or ASUS use for these types of machines.

I looked up the benchmarks relative to my desktop and this beats mine by a fair bit. I'm tempted.

The programming wok is what I was referencing. Can you find something in your range that has either an i5-6500HQ, or i7-6700HQ? Both quad cores, 4 threads vs 8, respectively.

I'd go with it. A GTX 980M at that price is great.

Ah, I misunderstood then. Not sure, exactly, I'm not a techie kind of person. But not highly intensive.

Okay, need a gaming laptop for work.

I'm in the UK and I'd like something close to the performance of my i7 4770k/GTX 780 Ti/16GB RAM desktop.

This will be my first gaming laptop, so I'm a bit paranoid about overheating, etc. I'll be playing it on a flat surface/desk at work, so the vents underneath will have room.

I only need a 15.6" screen as I'll be sitting quite close to it, though if going to the next size up doesn't add a few £100 then I'll go for that.

I do sit with the light on in my office so I don't want the screen shimmering a light off it.

Other than that, I don't play online, so just want something that can play some games from last year to before in 1080p @ 60FPS.

Finally, I've had too many past general laptops have their HDDs break on me, so I only go SSD on portables now and since I don't mind reinstalling things, 256GB should be plenty.

How much multitasking is a laptop dual core cpu capable of? For example, the 6600u. If I will have a lot of windows open at one time, for example, two mozilla firefox browsers with ten tabs each, and I am conducting a video chat through the web and working on a word document, will a laptop with 8gb ram and 6600u processor be able to handle that work flawlessly, or should I be looking at laptop with quad cores? Price is not a factor here. The problem is battery life. Quad core laptops have terrible battery in comparison to duals. longevity is also an issue. I am looking for a laptop that will last at least 5 years. I have a few laptops decided but this dual and quad core issue really has me stumped.

EDIT: And do Quadro gpus act like another cpu? Will they enhance the cpu?

What laptop(s) are you looking at? Are you looking for gaming or just productivity?
If you want gaming, the Dell Inspiron 7559 is a quad-core laptop with a 960M and 9 hours of battery life. Since you don't have a budget, also consider the Inspiron 7559 with a Core i7 for maximum multitasking at the cost of some battery life.
If just productivity, honestly the 6600u should be fine but again it depends on the laptop(s) you're looking at.

And no the Quadro will not enhance the CPU; it's a GPU after all.

Anyone of you who just got a new laptop have issues with blurry text?
Sounds like you don't like display scaling.
Are you on Windows 10? What's the screen size & resolution?

Right-click the desktop, click "Display Settings".
"Change the size of text, apps, and other items"; For a 1080p screen, set this to 100%. For high density screens, e.g. 1800p or 4K, set this to 200%. All in-between settings will cause blurry text.

I was looking at the lenovo thinkpads because I really like their keyboard and mouse and clickers. Particularly the p50 or the p50s. What does the Quadro do different than a gaming gpu? Again I need it to last at least 5 years with no noticeable slowdown. So a 6600u can handle the scenario I mentioned previously? "If I will have a lot of windows open at one time, for example, two mozilla firefox browsers with ten tabs each, and I am conducting a video chat through the web and working on a word document, will a laptop with 8gb ram and 6600u processor be able to handle that work flawlessly, or should I be looking at laptop with quad cores?"

Edit: Also, I need a number pad because I do a lot of number crunching.

I have a pretty good idea what I want and where to get it from. A company called PC Specialist in the UK. I've ordered 2 desktop PC's in the past and they've been fine so I'm looking at a laptop.

It would be for gaming but I'm not planning on playing the most graphically intensive games. However 60fps would be my goal.
My price range is £1000 - £1300.

So this is what I'm looking at -
Chassis & Display Octane Series: 17.3" Matte Full HD IPS LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i5 Quad Core Processor i5-6600K (3.5GHz) 6MB Cache
Memory (RAM) 8GB HyperX IMPACT 2133MHz SODIMM DDR4 (1 x 8GB)
Graphics Card NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 970M - 6.0GB DDR5 Video RAM
Hard Drive 500GB SEAGATE HYBRID 2.5" SSHD Drive, SATA 6 Gb/s

This would come with Windows 10 (£79) and an LED keyboard.
In total it would be around £1290. If I change from the i5 to an i7 it would be around £35 more.
So how does that look?

Any good laptop out there budget friendly that is capable enough for $300-$350? Not for gaming of course.

All $300 laptops are kinda in the same bracket to my eyes. Go Asus, Lenovo, or Acer.

I have been looking all over the web for answers, but none were found. Can someone give me a good example of how good a 6600u would be in multitasking? I am looking at the lenovo thinkpad t560 currently because of its enormous battery life and awesome keyboard and tracker/touchpad. I just need a laptop able to do a lot of multitasking and do it for at least 5 years adeptly.

Canada

Student, and Minecraft/Photoshop use

Any advice for Canadians, I don't see laptop prices too crazy but my girlfriend is aching for a laptop now. She won't really care for webcams necessarily and a few extra stuff but it seems that is an auto feature at this point.

Any suggestion for a good laptop with a budget of some £600? I need it mostly for gaming, football matches and data science:) Don't really care about portability. London based if that matters.

You'd be better off upping the budget by £100 or so, to get one of these.

People are starting to get their razer blade stealth and people seem to like it.

Thunderbolt 3 in the usb type c connecter is going to be a huge game changer.

One last thing to ask about laptops. The one I'm looking at has an i5 6600k, 16GBDDR4RAM, 970m and 2 HDD (1 SSD and 1 HDD). Thing is there are two options for the power brick - 230w and 330w. Would the 330w be better than the 230w? I'm thinking that the power draw will be fairly high when playing games.

Alright, finally about to bite on a laptop. One FINAL questions, however:

*It's true that I don't need to get 16GB of RAM right? 8GB should be sufficient if I'm getting it for gaming?

Would the 330w be better than the 230w? I'm thinking that the power draw will be fairly high when playing games.

If you're going to overclock (which is the reason to take the unlocked CPU), definitely the 330W brick. That'll give the headroom to oc the 970M too.

Alright, finally about to bite on a laptop. One FINAL questions, however:

*It's true that I don't need to get 16GB of RAM right? 8GB should be sufficient if I'm getting it for gaming?

There are no games which even use 8GB.

Hmm, what I thought.
And with regards to RAM assuming the OS uses 2GB are there games that use 6GB? RAM is pretty cheap, even DDR4. Maybe I'll drop to 8GB but I can afford 16.

The laptop RAM is one of those things that's so easily upgradeable, you can always skimp now, get more later.

So thinking about picking up a gaming laptop to compliment my Macbook pro which SUCKS for gaming.. does anyone know if they even make duel laptop carrying bags?

Hey guys, I need some advice on a notebook. Primarily for work, but also gaming. Location is Germany.

It's a Lenovo Y700-15ISK 80NV00GPGE Notebook
- 15.6" FHD IPS
- Core i5-6300HQ
- 8GB
- 1TB
- GTX 960M 2GB
- Hybrid FreeDOS

These are the detailed specs:

https://www.notebooksbilliger.de/le...2b-5267-42b5-ac10-8fe9df60aaf6?nbb=pn.md#Q4C8

The price is 899 Euro, with a discount it's 764,15 Euro.

My notebook right now is an ASUS N53SN with an i72630, 16GB RAM and a GT550M with 2GB VRAM.

Is it worth changing the hardware?

I purchased a Lenovo Y50 laptop with similar specs (GTX 960m, 15.6 in, etc.) a few months ago and I can vouch for its very solid gaming performance. For example, with Black Ops III (a rather un-optimized game), I was getting 45-50 fps at 1080p & and a combination of High/Ultra settings. It may start throttling after extended gaming sessions, but a basic laptop cooler can help minimize that.

It's also nicely designed and quite slim/lightweight for a gaming laptop, and it wouldn't at all look out of place in an office setting. If you were to compare it to some of the other, far larger gaming laptops, you'll understand what I mean. In any case, it's definitely something I'd recommend to others.

Small sale on the Dell Inspiron i7559. It's going for $799 $899.

I'm considering the i7 version. I could probably sell my Sager P170EM, for $600-$700, pay the difference.

I'm interested in Pascal, could wait. I'm going to see how Xcom 2 performs on the 7970m. If it struggles. I could use the Dell as a quick stop gap.

unless its soldered on to the board

RAM is never soldered on a Clevo.

7970M is equal or slightly greater than the GTX 960M.

Interesting.. Thanks for that.

I tried The Division beta, and it didn't even hit 20FPS on low. I watched some YT videos of the 960M where The Division ran as high as 40 FPS with medium settings. I'm guessing it's a beta issue with AMD cards or something.

The wait continues.... Hopefully, Xcom 2 runs well on my current laptop.

I very well could be way off on that, it's hard to find 7970M benches with the latest drivers.

I do know that the 7970M is a downclocked 7870, while the 960M is almost a full bore GTX 750 Ti. Stock vs Stock the 7870 easily beats a 750 Ti, so overclocking your 7970M to stock 7870 or beyond (it can oc really high) should yield the same result.

Get a custom VBIOS and crank those clocks to the max.
