The Waggle-Free Nintendo Wii Appreciation/Collectors Thread

I always wondered if anyone collects the shovelware on this system? It has some great games but do people stop there or even collect like IMAGINE games?

There are probably people trying to get complete collections so you might as well call them shovelware collectors.

some shovelware is rare and collectible lol someone mentioned a horse sim earlier in the thread, that i'm sure is a dime a dozen in Japan but it got an NA localization.

Probably. There are some shovelware games that cost more than they should be:

Sing 4: The Hits Edition w/ Microphone
New U: Mind, Body, Yoga, and Pilates Workout (Funnily enough, it's not on the Wii U and it's published by Deep Silver.)
Fritz Chess (Deep Silver again.)
Literally any horse games for the Wii

And of course, the final sports games from 2K and EA which might as well be shovelware since almost no effort was put into them.

-NBA 2K13
-MLB 2K12
-WWE 13 (Originally from THQ but 2K has the license now.)
-Madden 13
-FIFA 15 (Strangely, there is no FIFA 14 for Wii.)

Why not? People collect for the Virtual Boy & N-Gage. Albeit the libraries are significantly smaller. Shovelware needs a home to you know.

I've been collecting for the Wii for a while now and while I'd like to say I have a top-notch collection if I see a game that I haven't tried for $0.89 (with PowerUp Rewards) from GameStop, it's hard for me to pass up.

What is the general consensus about Disaster: Day of Crisis?
It's more or less like No More Heroes: technically you could trash it very easily, but the game uses Wii controls perfectly, and does crazy things while not taking itself too seriously. It's an amazing experience if you get into it.

Also, the OP is really bad: it's titled "waggle free" but names tons of very good games using waggle (including Super Mario Galaxy), there is no talk at all about the amazing Bit. Trip Series, and there is the usual anti Other M hysteria.

I know I can google this, but there tend to be so many different answers, so Im just asking here.

I now own both a Pal and an NTSC Wii. Is there any differences on them, or is it really redundant to keep both when I could just softmodd one of them to play all regions. Or is this once again the case of the ntsc-machine being better for outputting 60hz/full image etc. Keep in mind I will use the machine mostly for Gamecube-games (since the Wii ones are being played one the Wii U.)

Well you naturally get the benefit if not having to go through Gecko or whatever region unlock tool you'd use on a PAL Wii to play your NTSC GCN games and should you want to buy some NA VC games that will never appear on Wii U VC due to the platforms not being supported, you get the 60Hz guarantee there.

Video quality wise I have heard nothing about differences, though.

Ok, so its not like with older consoles (nes-n64 at least), were the Pal-system sucks compared to the ntsc-system? Or is the difference now built into the games themselves somehow?

IMO a complete library of any system is a silly proposition.
Half the fun to be a collector is deciding your ideal collection for a system and get it (if prices are acceptable) and also learning the history of a console.
The other half of the fun is actually playing the games :-)

Agreed with this.

Complete library collecting isn't for everyone, but it can be very rewarding. People think it's as easy as throwing money out the window and games appear on your shelf, but you'd be surprised how difficult it might be even in today's world to get everything. Collecting is a separate hobby from gaming. You can play the good ones and still collect them all.

And it's all part of the console's history and legacy, both the good and the bad games. It would be a shame if only good games survived, preserving the bad ones are part of our culture.

100% this.

I understand your perspective and I respect it.
I am aware of the importance of preserving videogame legacy or else I wouldn't have lend my contribution to Unseen64.
At the same I live my VG collecting hobby as a fusion between collecting physical games and playing them.
To me there is no difference in playing Sega Rally on Saturn or playing Mario Kart 8 on WiiU just because one is a older product compared the other one.
What matter to me is if my limited free time is well spent on playing a VG (instead of doing other things).
That's why it makes little sense for me to get everything (or many games I have no interest into aside to add another entry in my collection).
It's not upon me to preserve commercial games but to dedicated associations/museums.

As an aside I do actually have a hobby with a little stint of preservating something, so again I can relate to the feeling.
Difference is most of that stuff I collect is undocumented, even by specialists (while I do believe every Wii games is already "ripped" digitally).
I'm rasor focused on a specific niche thus I'm still managing a few hundreds "items", the "items" aren't for the most part available commercially and most of them began life on analogic medium (thus destined to get wasted ...) instead of digital medium.

Just entered an old Wii-game (NPC Pikmin 2) into my Wii U, and it looks and plays fine, except for this line of coloured pixels at the bottom of the screen. Has anybody encountered this problem before? I just completed NPC Pikmin without this issue btw.

I've only played NPC Pikmin 2 on my actual Wii so I can't say if I had the problem. Do more Wii games have the same problem outside of this? It might just be a artifact from the overscan that they never bothered removing.

Its the first game I have seen having it. I did fix it by moving the image a pixel down, so its no big deal, but just very strange that there would be such a bug in a 2009-game.

Edit: DId anybody play the Alien Syndrome reboot on the Wii?

Anyone play Gunbird LA & NY? If so, would you recommended it?

Sure, bought it near mint for cheap from GameStop, love it. Both are pure '90s Sega arcade rail shooter goodness, even if they don't have the name recognition of the HotD or Virtua Cop series. Very accurate translation. No attempts were made that I recall to upgrade the graphics any beyond upscaling to 480p, which scratches my nostalgia itch, but may not be to everyone's tastes.

I rented it once when it was fairly new. Noting that I love the original arcade and NES versions, I thought the Wii remake was muddy, ugly, and pretty mediocre in gameplay. I haven't been in any hurry to pick it up. Definitely of the "make everything gritty and brown!" era of video game visuals.

Thanks! Just what I wanted to hear. I'm looking for a Virtua Cop Plus type game, this seems perfect.

Complete collectors are a wacky breed. They're all over YT and more hardcore communities.

Because of YT more people are becoming complete collectors as well.

Personally, that's not my style. I'm more of a top 20 for each system type of guy.

Im personally more a "all the games I would like to play for each system" type of guy, which in the situation of plattforms like the Nes/Famicom, Snes, Mega Drive, Wii and DS, still takes it into the hundreds easily. But yeah, no complete collections for sure.

All this talk about shovelware , remainded me that no all shovelware is bad , i mean most is but , is there any that could be recomended?

After years of not buying any new Wii games, today I added these three to my 50+ collection:
Batallion Wars 2, Lost in shadows, The Sky Crawlers.

Good choices?

Three great games, all overshadowed by the "motioncontrolz lolz" that ruled the press at the time.

I wouldnt call them hardcore gamers at all, until proven otherwise. Hardcore money spenders, hardcore packrats.

Some of these guys have a billion games then upload vids in stretched 480i and no insight into the actual gameplay.

Notice I just said hardcore only ;)

But you're right. Many aren't huge into playing them lol.
