I've defended Massive's approach against the shortsighted criticism that is unable to make a gameplay abstraction from the Clancy settings, in extension completely ignoring the variety of Clancy games that exist. I will say time and time again that a Clancy setting does not preclude any type of game mechanics, let alone a loot RPG with damage scaling. You could make a Puzzle Quest type of game with a Clancy setting and it would still be okay.
But if there are zombies (or any sort of implausible adversary) in the main game then that breaks any sort of pretense of this being a Clancy game. While any sort of gameplay compromise is okay as long as it preserves the setting, this would be a direct violation of that spirit.
I personally don't care for people suggesting that type of stuff for the sake of variety or to "spice up" raids or whatever. It literally irks me to see some people salivating at the possibility. The onus is on the developer to develop interesting content while maintaining the integrity of the setting. If they can't at least do that, they fail to prove that they didn't simply use the Clancy name as a cheap flavored condom just to penetrate a market, as they are currently accused of by many detractors.

They had that press event before closed beta in Malmö where youtubers got to record footage. I don't remember which YT personality it was, BUT in his footage you could see what I think was rikers attacking cleaner position in DZ.
Would be cool if they took a part of the city and put it in a DLC with zombies and stuff like Call of Duty have done.
As long they used same DLC to remove "Tom Clancy" from title.
I guess it depends on hat the virus is planned to be. So far people just die.
I would be more than ok with a Read Dead style Zombie DLC. Make it some special DZ that you can go into out of choice, not have it forced upon all the players.
As for Zombies being non-Clancy, I really don't think this game will be good/bad based upon the Clancy name. Its just a marketing tool for Ubi, not a guarantee of a good game with authentic military tactics/storyline etc. I am sure they could have dropped The Clancy part and it open them up to more freedom in the long run.
I don't see why having a separate mode taking the game and its setting balls to the walls is bad as long as its not "connected" with the main game at all. Even for a Clancy game I could see it being possible to justify some sort of mutation, evolving of the virus or something like that.

We do know about their motives and goals.
They got stuck on Manhattan and their leader, Bliss, took the entire group rogue when he got tired of the JTF not accomplishing anything. The group seeks to establish Facist rule and wants to eventually take over the entire US.
One of the Mission 2 results explains this but a ton of that info was played on the Pirate Radio station in the Safe House during the beta.
Yeah, not sure why people are so against it if done right and its damn fun! I would actually like a Zombie outbreak game with high tech weapons, squad tactics etc, even if it was just a side option for end-game.
They could have, but they didn't.
And nobody has argued the Clancy name is a guarantee of a good game. It is a guarantee of a certain and specific narrative conceit, however, in which zombies or implausible antagonists don't fit.
What they actually do with the game will determine if the Clancy name was a cheap marketing pretext or not. So far it doesn't look like it is, but some people in this very thread apparently want it to be.
Saying that a weaponized strain of a virus (smallpox they say) is flawless and with attempts at making a anti-virus or something there couldn't be a mutation of said virus to instead of out right killing people, make them highly aggressive or something?

Before he was banned, Digital Hitmann had stated that Massive had Tom's son Thom out there to take a look at the game and Thom seemed to approve of it. So I would think this suggests that Massive wants to honor the name and not just cash in on it.
If you wanted to try to base this in reality, you should start with rabies or some other modified lyssavirus for that scenario, not smallpox. Even going with a synthetic or modified prion might be better than smallpox, but we don't know much about prions so there would still be a lot of fiction to go along with it.

Quick question. All this talk about the name. Does the game actually use Tom Clancy material/writing or is it its own new story and material using a military like Tom Clancy universe created by Ubisoft?
I don't even think its confirmed smallpox, just that it share the same symptoms. Clean me if I'm wrong. So I can see them being able to do it, with enough tinkering and cleverness. I've always found virus strains interesting, and CDC do have a camp in the game, god knows if they took anything with them *hint hint*
Its based on "Tom Clancy's The Division: New York Collapse" I think. A book.

Really hoping that there's no zombies in the actual main game. As an add-on DLC, no problem as long as it's just optional and has no connection to the main game, it's fine but otherwise, please Ubisoft, don't fuck up The Division.
Honestly I have no idea what it's based on, if anything. But as a microbiologist, I can say the closest thing to zombies would have to come from a lyssavirus. There are a couple things that could be described as having slow non aggressive zombie-like symptoms, but people would actually be pretty sick and not moving much. Rabies/lyssavirus is pretty much the only thing to conceivably make people actually aggressive.
Edit: That said, I think the premise of a virus that just killed people and disrupted society is plenty to stand on, plot wise, for the game.

Not sure I'm up for grinding it hard like the closed since all it seems to be adding is 1 new story mission?
I'll dabble to get my unlock for game release, and do the 1 new story mission, but the rest can wait till release.
I hope OB at least lets us create a full blown character.

The book was written as most big games get a book tie in. When they delayed the game again, they took stuff written just for the book and reincorporated it into the game as a hidden "quest" you have to decipher on your own to find the character talked about in the book/guide.

You know something has me thinking The Division overall at least to me is different than most other rpg's that are out there. In a modern setting with a futuristic tint to it..still draw some similarities from other games like diablo 3. But also the whole atmosphere from NYC has me by the clutches,the loot,the talent tree..letting your base evolve to a fully operational base is going to be awesome. For my feeling i like that is a more modern RPG we have a lot of fantasy and space fantasy rpg like games but this is to me a more a fresh air.
