Firewatch's PS4 performance is terrible

Cross-posting from OT: am I better off on a mediocre PC (i5-2320 3.0 GHz, 8GB RAM, SSD, and a GT 545 1GB DDR5) and a 360 controller or go for the PS4 version?

Edit: or just waiting?

I have 4/5 trophies so I'm probably almost done. While not unplayable, it hitches constantly likes it's having trouble loading. It also hard crashed once while loading a day. During the last half hour I've also started getting really bad pop-in. I really like the game but the hitching is annoying as fuck.

Also, I immediately turned the auto-saves off so that isn't the problem.

The devs have said they're working on a patch, I just hope they also include some basic camera improvements and settings because for me that's the biggest offender. I could live with just a fluctuating framerate.

I wouldn't expect a patch to really fix things.
One of the dev posted in the OT yesterday and said that they are looking into it and want to fix it.

Basically the gist of the situation was that they need to get Unity Tech and Sony to both work together (which seems to be hard) with them in order to fix issues with Unity engine.

around the time the PS4 was announced, i had someone swear up and down to me that every single PS4 game would be guaranteed to be 1080p/60fps

i ofc explained to him why thats laughable, but he wouldn't listen.

no clue how someone could possibly believe that

I think I'll be fine tonight. I rarely take GAF performance impressions seriously after things like The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 being described as "unplayable" and Bloodborne as having "shit" framerates on here.

I agree.
And for what is worth, i'm having performance issues on PS4 but they are definitely not making the game broken to me, it will be definitely a better game with some patching. Every one has their standards different for these kind of stuff, the game really shouldn't be performing like this, i will admit.

You'll barely manage 25-30fps on low at 720P with that rig if my guess is correct. I'd go with the PS4 version even with the performance issues and the odd crashing.

Can not believe how they don't offer a 30 capped frame rate. It's so damn obvious A LOT of people prefer that option. It's damn simple to implement that. It's jarring really.

It's lax attitudes like this that result in games being released in such a shoddy state. Seems like I've recently played a lot of games near launch where the performance has been shit, and had to wait for several patches before it was actually acceptable, XCOM 2 being the most recent (though that's only just come out, so still waiting on fixes for the shit performance).

I would like Firewatch to be fixed, but acting like Campo Santo, a team consisting of eleven people, shouldn't have even passed certification because "game sometimes runs at lower than 30 fps" is a notion that I have no regrets saying is ridiculous.

Game development is hard, guys! Stop having rose-colored glasses for the olden days. Not having patches didn't make games better at release, it just means games never got fixed.

What a bummer! I've been looking forward to this for months. I guess I can wait another month or two at this point...

Unity isn't super hot on PCs, either, though it fairs better there than on consoles.

Yeah, given your PC you're probably better off waiting for a patch or two to hit on the PS4

Developers are so weird sometimes. They are capable of creating a mindblowing artistic style and an immersive world and great dialogue, but are somehow oblivious to things such as uncapped framerate judder and anisotropic filtering. It's a real mindfuck to think about.

I am pretty sure a dev implied on Steam forum that the game is capped at 30 on PS4.

He said the game is 1080P/30Fps with a mix of medium and high settings with some settings dialed all the way to Max.

campo santo makes dev tools?

Panic, the publisher, has been around for a long time and makes apps for Mac and iOS like Transit (an FTP client) and Coda (for web development). Firewatch is the first game they've published, but the game was made by Campo Santo.

I love how legitimate complaints about a title that due to its size and scope, should have absolutely no fucking issues running on a PS4 are considered "unreasonable" and from what Dark is saying, it's likely not going to be a quick fix.

Another Unity letdown? I have yet to play a game that performs smoothly in Unity on a PS4, but maybe I'm missing some.

I can't believe this game made by like a 6 person team doesn't run as well as COD.
Someone said 11, you said 6..on the same page.
There are plenty of games with small teams that perform well. The Witness runs at 60FPS on a propertiary engine written from scratch by that small team.

The issue with Firewatch has little to do with team's size but at the same time it's not the developer's fault..but rather the engine.

There isn't a single Unity game outside of Ori and the Blind Forest and I think Escape Plan that performs well on consoles.

That's a shame. I was waiting to buy it until after I finished Dying Light, but I might hold back a bit longer now.

I'm no framerate connoisseur, but I can wait on the game a bit.

It's really weird to me how a game like this couldn't run well on the PS4. Its good looks seem to come from its art direction rather than any graphical powerhouse? And how can a linear adventure game with no action have "bad controls?"

Unity is really, really, inefficient from the get-go.

I'm very tolerant of performance issues, but it's the wildly fluctuating framerate that makes this hard to play, currently.

The framerate goes from 50ish to 10-20ish every couple of seconds, or basically every time you use the right stick. If you intend to use the right stick for camera control, it's going to be really bad. As long as you don't move your head, performance is okay. In a first person game however, using the right stick is hard
/impossible
to avoid.

I thought the Witcher, Fallout and especially Bloodborne were perfectly playable in pretty much every state they've been in, but I can't play this without feeling that I'm playing a wildly inferior, handicapped version of the game.

I'm going to hold out playing any further until patches hit. The game looks gorgeous, by the way. Unfortunately, it's not as positive in motion.

Theme's fantastic, though.

So, is the performance better or worse than Everybody's Gone to the Rapture? I had no issues with that game and I just want a ballpark

This is what I feared. I found that, while those games had issues, their performance was "good enough" for me.

I'm really glad I didn't cave and purchase this as soon as it went up on PSN. I was very, very tempted because of that beautiful dynamic theme.

These are my thoughts - I'm currently playing XCOM 2 on PC with the minimum settings and don't give a shit because it's fun as hell, even though the framerate is atrocious and there's all sorts of performance issues thanks to my old-ass PC. I think I'll be okay with whatever issues come up with this as well.

very well said. i'm a 60fps fan but i can enjoy a 30fps destiny or a more janky Bloodborne just fine. But this is something else.

Unplayable? No.

But they were/still are shit. It's cool that you have low standards though.

My indie machine is failing me after 4+ years! Nooooooooo!

I went borderless windowed for Ori and was able to hit a real solid fps, forget what resolution though but I want to say it was higher than 720. Surprised I wouldn't be able to handle this to be honest.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
This combined with the Eldergeek review means I can wait for a sale! It'll be half off in a couple of months and I'll just dip in when the patches fixes this.

Already bought it, but at least I will be a little more prepared for bad framerate now. As long as it doesn't reach Killer is Dead PS3 levels I will be fine.
