Firewatch's PS4 performance is terrible

how about just 'lower', & leave it at that? i've been playing video/computer games since the '80's, & i've always been willing to cut developers some slack if, despite the technical flaws, i can still manage to have a good time. the fact of the matter is, some of us are just nowhere near as sensitive when it comes to this stuff as others :) ...

That's fair.

I mean i have the platinum in Fallout 4 but i would never ever try to convince someone that the framerate is anything other than terrible.

The devs have said they're working on a patch, I just hope they also include some basic camera improvements and settings because for me that's the biggest offender. I could live with just a fluctuating framerate.

Why didn't they work on this patch and complete it before releasing the game? This is a digital release. There was no deadline to start pressing discs or anything.

Yes because I don't recall being that much bothered by frame drops. And I've only played Firewatch for like an hour or so.

Waaaaaay worse.

I honestly think videos like the one above don't do the current state justice; the lack of control over what's happening onscreen is something that has to be felt while playing. Keep this in mind.

It's really hard to overstate how much the feel of the game is impacted by its performance, in this case.

Did you two think Until Dawn had some frame rate issues?

Is the PS4 Contriller worse than the PC controller implementation, or is the controller implementation overall just not great? It's hard to tell if the complaints are specific to how the PS4 port controls or if it's just controllers in general.

Performance is poor sometimes and a steady 30 fps would be great, but it's definitely playable.
I hope the performance issues are not putting people off....it's an amazing game despite the issues.

I did not play Life is Strange until recently because of the so called bad lipsync issues...tbh, it did not bother me one bit when playing. The great story sucked me in and the same thing happened with Firewatch.

i played a bit on my mates PC and it felt fine in 60 and then i went home to buy the PS4 version and it felt bad.

Bought the theme immediately but yeah I might hold off on buying the game for a bit. Not dying to play this so I'll wait.

People really need to stop buying games that run like shit. Let them fix it and then buy it. The only thing that matters for them is sales. Don't support games that run this badly.

I love games that are butter smooth but its not a deal breaker for me. Crashing my precious and making me unplug it to turn it back on is.

Hope this gets sorted out.

Edit: at above: NOPE. Not even going to think about installing this until that shit gets fixed.

Yeah agree with this, you only have one chance to make a first impression. I can understand an online game having unexpected performance issues on release, but Firewatch's issues must have been widely known by the developers. At least lock it at 30fps.

The video doesn't make it seem too bad. I wasn't actually all that bothered by framerate in Abe's Oddysee on PS4, and that was kind of this way too, being again made in Unity. I'd imagine in a game where there's no action it will be even less of an issue.

Or I'll find out for myself, and if it's unacceptable I'll bitch to customer service and get a refund.

Being an informed consumer is great, but we can't start implying that people are stupid for being excited to play a game day one.

As far as I know, every review called the bad performance on PS4 so, we are guilty too. I don't mind, the game is great, I just wish it'd run better but I'm paying more attention to the story and atmosphere, it's just a bother when it crashes but it's been only twice so far.

the video is capped at 30, the game isn't. it doesn't show you the real picture.

all purchases are final on PSN. they don't have to give you a refund and bitching for hours is not exactly something i'm looking forward too.

Its called pecedence though. If you went to Chipotle after watching the news about the E-coli outbreak, you can't then go on GAF and complain that youre sick. Sure, you're hungry but if something is known to cause you problems its best to wait and verify the product had been fixed, no?

Not at all! Some were bothered by its performance (nothing new there), which is why I was quite clear how much worse this is :)

It's an indie game, and sometimes shit just doesn't go as planned. That said, I don't think they're doing their game justice by releasing it in this form.

It might be 'playable', but only literally.

I've not seen a game run worse on PS4, and I've seen many run poorly.

I'm not one of those types that cares a whole lot about performance 60vs30 etc. but for a game like Firewatch, it's really noticeable.

The stuttering is constant and the frame drops happen randomly and all the time. It's such a massive shame because the game is really engaging until a whole fucking tree pops in from nowhere.

Yeah, I stopped looking around (which is a shame because the game is gorgeous) because the judder just from turning around gave me a headache. I did finish the game and really enjoyed the story, but my experience was definitely marred by the unlocked frame rate and hitching.

What boggles my mind is how the developers clearly PLAYED the game on PS4 and were fully aware of these issues, but didn't bother to spend enough time polishing them out. It's not like Campo Santo is a huge studio with publisher demands and a dedicated, abstracted QA team. My guess is the game was QA'd by the very people who made it, and yet they still release it in this state.

Kind of abhorrent, really. I bought the game anyways, but I will wait until a patch to play it.

Oh why didn't I check NeoGAF before buying it. Should I wait for a patch, or is it not worse than fallout 4 (because I was allright with that)?

Yeah good luck with that. Playstation support is terrible and who knows if you end up getting your profile locked or something like that. It's not easy getting your money back from Sony. I think people are stupid when they are preordering and buying games before they know how they run and especially after. If you buy games that run this bad, then you can't ever bitch about other games that run badly. There is just no excuse for games to run this badly.

It definitely stuttered quite a bit during my play through and crashed once but it honestly did not distract from my enjoyment of the game at all

If performance is the issue then there's not much you can do, since you don't write the engine.

They can only optimize assets or reduce graphic, and then it's a struggle with whatever the art direction wants to deliver.

Yey...a normal person response!

Tbh i had no issues with the way oddworld performed either...or the witcher...or bloodborne....or fallout...i think i'll be fine.

Unity is a great and fantastic engine to work with. However, yes it does have it flaws. I never worked on it on a ps4 so i can't really say much about that.

I do however suspect that the engine is not very well optimized for open world games like this.

But at the same time...it does feel kinda lazy for the developer to just say "Naww its not our fault"
Something is obviously causing this, this doesn't just happen for no apparent reason.

Maybe you render to many trees, particles at the same time? Maybe your draw distance is to big? Too many Update calls? Something with the collision detection?

Im surprised Unity havent made steps at minimising these issues as it doesnt seem to be a new thing with ambitious Unity games on consoles (and PC too really).

Considering how competitive engine pricing has become it wont take long for some devs just to move from Unity to other engines like UE4.
