Microsoft Releasing Exclusive Games on PC Is Great for Xbox Owners

So I should expect to see a Microsoft published game (that's not minecraft) on a playstation console in the coming years then? Since they want to maximize profit?

I mean, Sony put one of their published games on PC so I don't see how this isn't possible.

It's 100% up to Microsoft and it wouldn't be a bad thing at all.

This post really seems like some sort of "gotcha!" post. What is your point?

I understand the aspect of wanting games to sell well, but there's a fundamental catch to a game being exclusive vs not. I want there to be exclusives (or at least I want 1st-party ones). Exclusives are the gaming version of a sales pitch. "See this game? It's running on our system and only on our system. We made it. Check it out".

Here is the thing. These will still be Xbox exclusives for most people who bought an Xbox One. As most who did, do not have monster rigs sitting in their house because they prefer consoles. Nothing has changed for most of the people buying the Xbox One.

Downside is a struggling platform holder has given people 1 less reason to buy it. I can see why any Xbox One owner would be pissed. A platform that is having sales issues just gave millions of people a reason not to buy it. If sales tank enough support goes bye bye and how is that good for Xbox One owners?
Or you can look at it like more people will support the game and Microsoft could keep bankrolling them so the Xbox One still gets the games we all want. There are still two compelling reasons to buy the XB1 version. You get the windows 10 version free and I know it will run well on my $300-$400 Xbox one. I don't need to worry about system requirements and it runs well on my 65" tv with surround sound. Get over it. We are not losing anything. Long term, we will be gaining. I'm also loving cross buy.

People need to internalize that most of consoles owners are people who don't have gaming PCs and aren't interested in getting one. No point in leaving all the money from a PC version in the hopes that some will buy your console to play the game. You have better chances making more money by releasing a PC version rather than hoping some thousands PC gamers will buy the console for the game.

What's important for the XB1\PS4 is that the game isn't on the rival console because those are the platforms vying for the average console player.

For what this means for future Xbox consoles, it changes nothing. Microsoft will release their living room console box platform and whoever wants to buy it and the game on that machine will continue to do so. Others will buy the W10 version.

PC should be all about options. Release the games on both Steam and Win 10 Store so people can decide where to buy them from.

I feel like everyone who says to release games on Steam fail to acknowledge that Valve gets 30% of every purchase so getting mad at a company for putting it on their own store is unreasonable.

That would require them paying out to PS for every game sold. They still want people in THEIR ecosystem. Unlike iOS and Android in which MS is basically a nonfactor in the mobile space, PS4 is #1 and they are #2. They don't have to go to them. MS isn't becoming a third party. Try to make sense of something before you find the easiest route to negate something. Think before you type.

It’s a good thing. I switched from PC to console over the past few years, it’s easier and more convenient to play and from the comfort of my couch.

The older I get - the less I care about cutting edge / high end graphics and running games at 100 fps. Also years ago, my gaming rig doubled as my internet access point, so considering we have 2 tablets and 2 laptops no need to even fire it up unless I want fire up a Steam game.

I agree with you 100%, but I can still hope.

Rise of the Tomb Raider has weird problems on the Windows Store.

????????????????????

Uhhh, as an owner of all 4 home consoles, I can already tell that Microsoft has completely given up on the Xbone. It's disappointing and I'm absolutely ashamed to have bought this dust collector day 1. What's the point of even owning a console now that all the game have moved to PC!?! Why even buy console when can just build PC?!?

Tears are coming down my face and all over my keyboard writing this. All Microsoft caresa abut is money and not about please their loyal fanbase that has stuck with them since the OG Xbox. If there going to treat us like this I wont stand it!

Tommorow I'm going to go throw my Xbone in the trash and go to CIrcuit City to buy a new 980ti. Just remember that M$ did this to me! Goodbye fellow Xbots, it's been fun, but it's time to move on.

Sooo, what's the point of having a Xbox One now, exactly?

It´s great MS will earn more money and all that, but I don't care, not a stockholder. And sure is great that I will be able to play Quantum Break in my way more powerful PC, and having more people happy to buy it, yay.

But I buy a system to play stuff I only can play in that system. If you remove exclusives, my One is just a expensive paperweight.

If MS wants out of console business and want to sell "Windows Machines", they should say it already.

As a owner of both consoles and a very decent PC I love when they give me the option to select.
While most end up on PC for obvious reasons, some do go to the consoles.

Good on MS i hope they keep it up!

HAHAHA!

I hate the Windows Store. Absolutely hate it. For one thing, you can't pick where games install to.

That said? I think it's a great idea for Microsoft to say "yeah, if you buy this for our console, you can get it across multiple platforms," and I think they should do that with ALL their products. I, as a consumer, would love to be able to cross-buy all my Microsoft games via PC and Xbox. Sometimes I'd want to play on one, sometimes the other.

But, again, Windows Store is terrible.

10/10

And thank you for this

Are all the "release on Steam" people serious? That's not happening.

What are there doing right now is definitely testing waters. Xbox may go from console/hardware to service. All will probably depend on future sales of the console and games on the Win10 store.

It definitely matters to those who chose the X1 on the assumption that it was their only option. It's a good thing for PC gamers. Kinda stings those who bought X1 on that assumption, and kinda reduces the reason to own an X1.

Which, in turn, means lower X1 sales and a lower number of games (which is already the case). Which means fewer games for those that bought the X1.

It's not really a good thing for X1 owners unless you start focusing on very specific examples (like a multiplayer game with cross-play, which is a good thing). From a business standpoint, yeah, good for Microsoft. From a PC gamer standpoint, yeah, good for PC gamers. For the Xbox One owner, I'm still uncertain how this works out in their favor (per the title of this thread).

All that said, I see nothing wrong with you -- you, personally, or any other Xbox One owner -- loving their system and thinking it's a great system. It's not my bag, personally, but it has far too many games to chalk up as a bad system. But we're not talking about preferences. We're not talking about what we think is neat about Xbox One. We're talking about whether formerly-exclusive games coming out for PC is a good thing for Xbox One owners. And I don't think it is. If the best we can say is "well I don't really see how it affects me" then that sort of makes the point for me. We have enough bright minds on here who are aware of the business and mindshare implications.
Saying "oh well we still get some great games! What's the big deal guys?" on NeoGAF where we have access to a ton of sales data and information seems supremely naive. It means less reasons to buy an X1, which means lower potential sales, which means fewer buddies for you to play online with, which means less incentive for devs to put their game on the system.

This. Microsoft is giving me crossbuy and the option to play on the system of my choice. I can't hate this.

This is reminding me of when those Vita games got leaked for PC and people said they felt physically ill over it.

Come on, lol.

Yeah I don't get it, who gives a shit?

It's win-win for everyone, if you have that swanky PC setup now you can sell your Xbox (or just not purchase one), if you don't then you who cares? You can still take advantage of the fact that it's cross buy and now MS/Remedy will get more money to fund more games.

The only reason I could see people being physically ILL is this gives certain types on fanboys a little more or less ammunition depending on the stance but if you don't give a shit about furiously debating the merits of console x vs console y or pc vs console you'll see this is a great situation for everyone.

I have a decent rig (albeit not hooked up to my tv) and an xb1, im hoping this is the beginning of more cross buy/cross save initiatives. I can't be angry by this, Microsoft is giving me the choice to play how I went to play where I want to play and for no extra cost to me at all. It's fucking brilliant .

Anybody expecting Microsoft to pay say a 30 % royalty to Valve to put a game on steam is living in cloud fairy land.

Next people will eb saying MS would share the 30 % with Sony and release games on PSN.

Really funny.

I don't know how much you know about trying to create memes, I'm an expert

It is good. Soon I can ditch xbox and since a few ps4 games are coming to pc too, I can finally ditch these underpowered pieces of junk.

MS owns Xbox
MS owns Windows

MS makes money from Xbox game purchases
MS makes money from Windows 10 store game purchases

MS knows there are console only gamers
MS knows there are PC only gamers
MS knows there is an overlap of console and PC gamers

MS wants to maximize money
MS releases software on platforms to maximize money (Office on iOS and Android)

Neogaf users who think this is bad are dumb. Plain and simple.

No it doesn't. PC gamers will buy a PC, Console games will buy a console. And a small niche buys everything.

Again, most people who bought an Xbox One did so because they prefer consoles. Nothing has changed for them and Microsoft knows this.
"This doesn't affect most people who bought XBox One" doesn't really equate to "releasing exclusive games on PC is great for Xbox One owners".

I mean, I just disagree. If you think the long-term health of your console isn't affected by the loss of exclusives (i.e. a major incentive to buy that platform) then I don't know what to say.

It's not going to impact sales to that degree, though. The hardcore PC folks, or PC/PS4 owners, weren't buying XB1, anyway. Now, MS can engage those customers, while still having console exclusives to compete with PlayStation for the console market.

What changed for you?

That's right. Nothing.

I had a system that I bought to play exclusive games (is the only reason I have to buy any console). If you tell me there is not going to be more exclusives, I paid for nothing (well, for Halo 5 and KI, which are definitely not something 350$ worthy).

So yes, I would say it's quite a significant change.

I don't want to make it sound like a big deal, but I feel is disingenuous to say that a Xbox One user shouldn't feel affected by this.

But we as gamers should want gaming to be as inaccessible as possible in order for us to justify the convoluted bullshit that lead us to buying multiple video game boxes that all have essentially the exact same hardware in them.

Remember how much better movies were when you needed a DVD player, HD-DVD player and a Blu-Ray player in order to watch every movie that came out? Imagine if gaming suffered the same loss of exclusives and people just played what they wanted. It would be madness!

In general the amount of PC gamers buying AAA console games isn't tremendous, but they are notably profitable due to it being a digital marketplace.

They can also help keep up player populations if you have a crossplatform multiplayer title.

While you are losing a few console buyers, for the most part the core console audience is deciding between a PS4 and an XB1. If you can grab more titles or spend more money due to having a PC version, it's tends to be a net win overall. Just look at the amount of titles Sony has acquired as "console exclusives" by being open about this.

I can see your point from the aspect of people who MAY purchase an xbox one in the future, but if you already own one, you are not really affected. A game you wanted is still coming and you get to play it. If you had a PC to play it and chose to buy the one, then you made your choice.

I agree on the point that if sales tank they will stop making games for the one, but I think we are past that, at least for this gen. It will continue to get the AssCreeds, Fallouts, Battlefields, COD, etc, at least for the remainder of this Gen. As far as getting smaller projects, I think that die was cast during the first reveal. I already see a trend of things like the Witness, or Firewatch not on Xbox one and things like Rocket League coming WAY after the fact. The initial launch did more to damage the Xbox brand and cause devs to focus on PS4 than this move will ever do in my opinion.
