Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc PC |OT| It's getting Steamy in here...

Well sure, this is a given. If you prefer English dubs, don't let anyone tell you should still go with the Japanese voices. If you prefer Japanese, don't listen to the people who still insist you should play it in English.

Yep.

The only thing we should ever campaign for is the option of dual audio to begin with. Arguing choices of voice after the fact is just silly semantics and feelings, or worse where we outright insult people. :(

I agree with the whole arguing over which VA to play first. I like having dual audio for games because if I decide to play through the whole game in one language, I'll replay it the future with a different language. It adds replay value even though you already know what the outcome will be.

Do you guys think I'll like it if I hated 999? I mainly hated the characters, the true ending and the story, but I loved the axe ending and I liked the atmosphere/mystery.

I also love AA games.

it's like that, mixed with a bit of Battle Royale, a huge emphasis on mystery/intrigue and murder but also with KICK ASS TRIALS

and awesome music

and crazy off-kilter humour

Aside from being adventure/VN games with lots of twists and turns and a similar-ish premise, I don't think they're very comparable at all. Definitely give DR a try!

Despite the similarities in setup and overarching plot, they're very different beasts. Danganronpa is far more fast-paced than 999 and utilizes frantic toneshifts for its story over the more focused tone of 999.

If you love AA, I say give it a shot.

Are people aware of the fact that Monokuma's Japanese voice actress is Nobuyo Ōyama, the 80+ years old nice grandma who voiced Doraemon? She is also pretty much a national treasure in Japan. This little trivia is the referential joke with Monokuma because your everyday friendly mascot Doraemon is now this maniacal sadistic mascot. This joke can only be properly localized and kept in context if the voice actor of Mickey Mouse is voicing Monokuma. I died a little inside when I read how people's ears bleed when they hear Japanese Monokuma. Especially so when Nobuyo Oyama suffered from dementia just last year and Dangan Ronpa series is pretty much her final work and the work she basically came out of retirement for. I would prefer to play it in Japanese for that very reason out of respect. It's a preference though and I see no reason why we need to put down the other choice to justify our preference from both sides.

Maybe, I think it would depend on why you didn't like those things in 999 and why you like Phoenix Wright.

DanganRonpa has an atmosphere of bleakness to it but it often mixes in a lot of silly dialogue. I think most people liked the contrast but I thought it was a little too disruptive for its own good. The mystery was pretty well done and the story is much simpler than something like 999. The trial to trial moments focus on trying to figure out who committed the murder and expanding on individual characters while slowly pushing along the "why are we here?/Are we going to get out?" types of questions.

It's a genius ploy and I have the utmost respect for Oyama, but it doesn't change the fact that people didn't grow up with Doraemon and people don't like the voice and hampers the experience.

Pretty much. It's an amazing idea really, but I hadn't even heard of Doraemon before I played Danganronpa, so it doesn't really affect my experience one way or the other.

I've heard there's a big link with the JP VA of Monomi too, but that's probably best saved for the DR2 port thread...

I'm torn

999 annoyed me with it's so so so many non story related dialogues and conversations, but I'm interested in this -__-

Danganronpa does not go on long tangents like 999 does, but it can get a little redundant in trials unfortunately. That's more a problem with the entire genre though. DR is still among the best-paced visual novels of its length.

There's also the fact it's a linear, one-route game, so you don't have to replay stuff. There is a bad ending, which is really more of a glorified game over that takes you right back to the decision immediately afterwards.

danganronpa is paced well because it has more in common with adventure games than it does visual novels

If you find the Ace Attorney games to be the kind of entertainment you're looking for, then this would be the game for you.

It goes at a much faster pace than 999 plus there are more activities to do in the game than 999.

The good thing is that if you end up hating a Danganronpa character there's a high chance he may die.

Interesting... I like mystery stuff and heard good things about this game, so I'll definitely be giving it a try.

By the way, has the game's price tag been revealed yet? I'm kind of concerned about it since I've already bought The Witness a while ago, and am kind of wary about spending money on multiple full-price games in a single month.

30$, but 24$ on release due to 20% release discount.

Thanks for the input guys I'm intrigued, excited to try it!

Maybe, I think it would depend on why you didn't like those things in 999 and why you like Phoenix Wright.

The characters/story were pretty boring, shallow, uninteresting and lacked any sorts of development, they would also say random things at random times that doesn't suit The characters. The plot had many holes, the pseudoscience stuff was interesting, but the ending was like wtf, the wrong kind of wtf.

My problem with 999 ending wasn't the complexity, it was the amount of contradiction the game has with it self, it was so unsatisfying that I felt empty inside.

What I love about AA is that each character feels like someone I know, the mystery behind each case, slowly solving it as my friends and I slowly develop, AA3 ending felt very emotional, not to mention how satisfying it was to solve the case and see the criminals expressions.

I really disliked the spirit summoning parts it felt ridiculous summoning spirits in a court, and bringing the dead back to life really takes away from the value of someone dying, it's one of the many reasons why I think AA4 is the best in the series among being more dark with a much serious tone.

Forgot to mention that every filler case sucks, except the final case in AA1 and AA2

Favorite VNs:
AA4
PRvsPL
HD215
Ghost Trick
The Cat Lady (dunno if it counts as a p&c or a VN, but it's worth mentioning)

It sure is possible. I hated 999 too, but I really enjoyed DR1 and DR2.

That's encouraging, hopefully I'll enjoy it! :D
Sorry for long post :[

This is behind, like, 4 other games in my "gotta buy" queue, but I do want to check this out.

Is the game worth playing if I've already seen the show, and thus, know the twists?

Although you will miss the excitement of the main mysteries of the story, the anime is such a rush job that everything else will be novel for you. I'll say that if you liked it you will enjoy playing this.

Oh boy, if you thought the characters/story in 999 were boring and shallow, I honestly wouldn't even bother playing Danganronpa if I were you.

And 999 had plot holes? What? Characters would say too much 'random' stuff? Someone wasn't paying attention or simply didn't understand the story.

Man, for someone who hates Danganronpa, you sure do go into a lot of Danganronpa threads to shitpost the series, while fellating 999 dry.

Does this natively support resolutions over 1080p? I realize that the assets won't stand up to that kind of resolution.

S/he doesn't hate Danganronpa, s/he just likes ZE more, something that s/he seems really determined on letting everyone know.

When does this unlock anyway?

Call me crazy, but I wwould like to see a PS4 port just because I think it would be fun to see such a odd path from handheld game, to PC and then to console.
