Playing a game you wouldn't normally play just for the sole reason of racking up trophies or achievements is stupid.
Is that controversial?

I hate achievements so much that if a game is on a Nintendo platform and one of the others I'll buy it on Nintendo even if it runs worse.
Once a game has achievements I feel so fucking compelled to get them that it can really ruin the experience. Playing Shantae, Runner 2 and Shovel Knight over the last week without them was super liberating.
im going through them right now but the mega max x soundtracks are sooooooooooooooooooooooo average, like holy shit
i cannot find a single track i would listen to again

The intro level tracks for both X and Zero from MMX4 are fucking hype.
I don't really like stories where everything interesting in the setting has already happened, and you're just running around doing cleanup. Bloodborne's lore is good, but the narrative is a snoozefest. And yeah I've seen all the videos.
One of the best game stories was exactly like that, namely Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. I find it intriguing to learn about the events and secrets that lead to a world in ruin. Bloodborne's story is partly unveiled in the item descriptions, and all the little details scattered around. You have to put it all together from the tidbits you're being given. I highly doubt you got it all from videos. Hell, I've played the game through three times, and I still learn new things about it. That's the beauty of it.
Soul Reaver is one game of a long series and is effective because it demonstrates the after-effects of actions that you the player experience as Kain beforehand. Then, at the end and going forward into SR2 and Defiance, there's a ton of plot movement, new problems and characters introduced, etc. I'm not against stories set in ruined worlds. I'm against stories where few interesting things actually happen in the timeline of the game with the expectation that what came before was interesting enough. To some it can be. To me, it never is.
No, I probably don't understand everything in Bloodborne and don't claim to. I just wanted to pre-empt any dumb claims that I didn't like the narrative because I didn't read into the lore, which I did.
Soul Reaver was effective even if you hadn't played Blood Omen, like I hadn't. I had no idea of its background, other than what the opening cinematic and the booklet (miss those) told me, and it didn't affect the experience negatively. I was also talking about Soul Reaver in particular, not the sequels which never reached the same heights, and despite of the "To be continued..." ending it stands well alone. The same can be said about Bloodborne, even paralleling the abrupt ending.
There isn't much happening in SR either, when Raziel returns to Nosgoth. Most of it has already occurred, while he tries to uncover the events of the past. Kain's (and Moebius') machinations mirror those of Micolash and the other key figures in Bloodborne, the same goes for the different factions that changed and deformed during the course of time. In both of them, you come across characters, that were once revered, but have turned into something unspeakable and despicable.
I respect your opinion and understand where you're coming from, but I don't find Soul Reaver interesting by itself. Well, in some ways I do, such as the excellent dialogue and monologuing from Raziel. But if Blood Omen and the SR sequels didn't exist, I'd view SR as a case of an interesting premise that failed to fulfill the majority of its potential. There are even central plot points, such as Raziel gaining the Soul Reaver, that don't make any sense whatsoever until the sequels, and ditto for Kain's actions.
Unsurprisingly given our discussion, I happen to think Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance have superior stories.![]()
The Hylden are...yeah. Let's just say Hennig did the best she could with them in Defiance after the BO2 team introduced them.
I agree with this. Also, I'd love a Starfox Adventures sequel.I am eternally angry at starfox fans, as a huge starfox fan myself, for not letting the series evolve past starfox 64.
Starfox adventures was pretty good and introduced a new character to the starfox team.
Starfox assault was pretty great with great designs and continued the story.
Starfox command had its ups and downs but was non-canon anyways.
I was awaiting the next starfox with baited breath wondering where they were gonna go next.
And.....they are remaking starfox SNES.....AGAIN
A-FUCKING-GAIN
Because all starfox "fans" could muster for like 15 years was that they wanted starfox 64....again.
Metal Gear Rising is much more fun to watch than to play.
I think it's alright to want a franchise to "die."

These words you don't see juxtaposed very often.Teenage drama nonsense that is just so pretentious
God I hate the word "pretentious" so much. Even worse I'm starting to see people using it a lot IRL.
Life is Strange is a very hypocritical and pretentious game. It's also a borefest halfway through ep3, I had to struggle to finish the game because of how boring it was.
As for the "feelz" so many loves to harp on about, I think it's stupid to even have any warm feelings towards this game. Teenage drama nonsense that is just so pretentious that I can't stand.
Probably the most mediocre game I've played in 2015.

I will probably get into problems for this, but I have to say it:
Bloodborne looks like shit.
Amen. The graphics have zero depth to them.
Such drops show a 60fps target was always a stretch for a game running with this level of detail - the world filled as it is with a staggering density of objects. Every new area is cluttered with points of interest, from coffins twisted in chains, looming gargoyles, derelict wagons and crooked iron fences. It's a richly bleak sprawl set on cobblestones, tightly wound, and yet its vistas broad enough to show your small place in the city.
This high level of geometry is unlike anything we've seen from the studio before.
Fallout 4 being the deserved GOTY of 2015.
But then again, everyone loves it besides GAF
Absolutely. The sentiment is of course a situational thing, rather than just something I'd slap on anything I don't like or that feels like it's having problems. It's very situational for me, depending on if the newer games do the series justice, or if they feel stagnant.
For example, I feel like Sonic should just die because Sega clearly doesn't know how to make a good Sonic game anymore, and the series has peaked.
However, I don't want a series like Halo to die because there's no other shooter like it on consoles, and because Halo 5's gameplay is amazing, and serves as a good base to build upon. It feels almost like a reboot with better mechanics. What I'm trying to say is, the series can definitely go up from here.
Shocking. The non-enthusiast masses outside of GAF loved a game that was designed for them.Fallout 4 being the deserved GOTY of 2015.
But then again, everyone loves it besides GAF
Unsurprisingly a game that's aimed at stupid "casual" masses is loved by the same stupid "casual" masses.
Dragons Dogma is a very mediocre game. Combat is competent but not much, and everything else is just shit.
I thought Fallout 4 was as shitty as you, but I really think you're stretching the definition of casual here.
DmC is more enjoyable than DMC. As a matter of fact, I freaking love DmC. Half Life 2 is not as good as Halo or Metroid Prime, Metal Gear Solid's story is atrocious and a complete mess (I don't know why this is controversial) and Japanese games outside of Final Fantasy Platinum Games and Nintendo are for the most part too weird and not in a good way.
I hate minecraft
I like SFV.

And of course, look at the film industry today. We've got reboots and sequels of old movies just pouring over the fences. There's no reason that a series can't "die" and come back later in a decade once somebody has an actual fresh idea for it. I'd love to see Sonic canned for a decade. Revisit it in a decade or two maybe and see if there's anything worthwhile.
I don't like Wii motion controls for FPS games. It's why I prefer playing Metroid Prime on Gamecube over the Wii versions.
