The Most Dangerous Yes Man
3.0 + 1.0 will be what 3.0 was supposed to be (the stuff shown in the 2.0 credits) and 1.0 will just ascend the whole thing into absolute greatness.

Just finished watching it. I actually really liked it. I was completely immersed in the new world created and had fun making speculations in my head. The climax was too fucking much though. It was impossible to follow what the fuck was going on.

What does it mean for Kaworu to be the first Angel? How was he demoted? Why I'd an Angel working with SEELE?

What the fuck even is Gendo's plan? SEELE wants Human Instrumentality but what the fuck does he want? Why did he need Kaworu dead?

What the fuck is an Adam's Vessel? A surviving Adam?

What in the FUCK is a Lilin? Is that just a human? Why do they suddenly use the word Lilin?

How did Lilith wake up? I'm guessing the Twelfth Angel came down and started fucking shit up but what caused Lilith to awaken? Was it the Third Impact? Why did Unit 6 fuse with Lilith and stab itself?

Overall I really enjoyed it. But goddammit do they need to stop throwing all these nonsensical terms around. I did ove the whole idea of
humanity becoming these failed divine beings under Unit 1's image.
It felt good catching that. Also, Kaworu is still awesome.

I think 4.0 could be amazing, but only if it's basically the length of a movie and a half - maybe even two. One part to cover the other characters, and the other to rebuild Shinji from nothing via his dynamics with other characters, and give him something realistic to live for.

But that's up to how Anno's feeling about himself, I suppose.

Beings born from Lilith. Kaworu uses this word because he's an Angel and therefore born from Adam - but as to why Asuka suddenly uses it, that's not something that's been answered and something I'm really curious about!

2.22 and the 3.33
beast mode
scene imply that
Asuka may now be part-Angel after being contaminated by Bardiel in Unit-03.

Finally got my copy today. That might be the best movie I've seen since Fury Road. Still hate Shinji, though. Felt like we missed something pretty major between the NEXT TIME from 2.22 and 3.33. Like the whole "descending to central dogma" bit.

Yeah we only missed the most important event of the whole series, the end of the world. It's similar to skipping End of Evangelion.

I love the imagery and overall atmosphere of 3.33 too much to not like it. The bizarre, psychological, cosmichorror-ish bits of Eva were always the reason I enjoyed the show so much despite its flaws, and this movie recaptures that even if in a much messier and rushed way. Maybe it's because as far as Eva is concerned I've always placed the "feeling" of it over the cohesiveness of its plot or whatever. Shame we won't ever get any stream-of-consciousness sequences like the second half of EoE or Asuka's mindrape in these rebuilds though, always liked those bits and there's nothing quite like it in any other show I'm aware of.

I totally get why people have issues with 3.33 and it definetely has its fair share of problems, but I still really liked the overall product.

So has anyone watched it with both subtitles and has a preference?

The unsubstantiated rumor is that part of the holdup was that Khara was unhappy with the original sub/dub, and made them so another under closer supervision. That's a process that usually doesn't turn out well, but I'm curious if this is an exception.

Finally got it for myself and I liked it more than I expected to.

That said I am quite frustrated with the handling of character progression. The entire first half of the film (as well as many complaints people seem to have) is built specifically to get Shinji to a point similar to where he was before he met Kaworu in the show. Why was that? To build their relationship up so the Kaworu's death would lead Shinji to the same place he was at the start of EoE. From this, I feel that the many compliments of this film being "different" are pretty exagerated because in a lot of important ways I don't find that to be true.

But in relation to that I must say that the Shinji/Kaworu stuff was my favourite part of the movie. I liked their relationship even more than the show tbh. Just really good stuff. The animation and music is fantastic, as to be expected. Also the English dub is really good, probably the best Eva has ever been in English, which is kinda sad that it comes with the lesser of the three movies.

The final movie can certainly still improve on the Rebuild series overall, but I feel like it has to be epic in length to get every single thing wrapped up. With that in mind, the main thing I kind of hope for is just a happyish ending that can close the book on the franchise for the time being.

I enjoyed 3.33 but I def had to read a little afterwards to understand everything. I would like to rewatch it now , I felt the entire middle of the movie was a little slow though. Still not a disaster liek most people make it out to be, for me at least. A long wait for the last one i am sure.

Honestly, I probably spoiled myself on that too deeply to really BE disappointed when watching it. It's already left me more questions than answers, so at this point it'd be just seeing everything unfurl properly.

Watched it ages ago (feels like 1000 years), but preferred 2.0. 3.0 felt like a big "WHAT?" the whole way through - but I think that's because the time skip aspect crapped out the plot progresion for me. It really felt like a "damn, should have just started the Rebuild movies from here" moment. A lot of really boring moments I didn't care for later on in the film too. After the end of 2.0 it felt like "oh yeah things are getting amazing" but then 3.0 started and it felt like a huge step back. 2.22 will remain the only blu-ray of the 3 released that I'll have purchased.

Forgot to say I would have preferred a 28 year old Asuka then just keeping everyone seemingly the same age. Fuyutsuki is the only one who seemed to have aged and he looks like a tired old guy.

The throw-away explanations for why Asuka looked the same while ignoring how no one else had aged felt dumb.

It's the Ryu/Chun-Li effect. Changing iconic designs is hard, so they had to bullshit up an excuse.

Having watched and re watched the original series, films and read the manga, and having thoroughly enjoyed 1.11 and 2.22. I found 3.33 to be a little jarring at first. As a narrative it is markedly different to the first two entries in the rebuild and I would imagine that a not inconsiderable number of viewers may find it to be a little much to absorb at first.

That said, having re-watched it and had time to consider some of the motifs and images; it seems to sit a bit better with me, certainly not the disaster some people have suggested, its just a bit.....different.

Overall though, it is an interesting addition to the series and i look forward to what 3.0+1.0 will bring even if i am a decrepit old man by the time it finally gets released with a Khara approved English language revision.....

4.0 needs to really, really go full insane. As insane as to make EoE feel like fan fiction.

C'mon Anno... you still have that darkness deep inside you. Let it flow.

That trope of that ending wouldn't be considered acceptable in even a non-canon spinoff doujin light novel.

Even if Anno passes away from dairy hypershock due to his weird diet, having no ending would be better than if 4.0 ended anything like that.

I'm willing to bet a kawoshin avatar that that's exactly what will happen.

I thought the point of these films was to make Evangelion non-insane/non-depressing/non-apocalyptic everyone dies

It began that way, and then pulled a 180º for 3.0.
I fully expect 4.0 to go total EOE apocalypse-gasm. What will be interesting to see, though, is if the film does a Chrono Cross and start explaining the weird hints at the TV series towards the end. (Despite some being a translation error irc)

Like Shinji, during the 'instrumentality', suddenly gets deja vu.

Wow, this thread is still active? Awesome! I just watched the movie for the fist time last night 3.33... but it's not really the 3rd movie that I want to discuss at this point...

Once I finally watched it, I jumped online and started watching reaction/review/impression videos... then quickly became aware of the "Continuation theory"... and now my mind has been blown wide open! I don't know where movie 3 fits into the formula... movie 4 may close the gap for us. But I now find a new respect and interest in the remake films. Even though I watched all 3 within the last week, I now want to watch them AGAIN and look for all these signs myself... and try to understand other things a bit better...

Finally! :) I'm going to try to hold off until 4.0 to watch both... but doubt I'll manage.

ouch! Being the 2nd post in the thread, this made me lol while also cry a little inside.

I heard this movie was supposed to suck and be bad...but I really enjoyed it. Interesting in seeing why people hate it so.

spoilers abound

At first , I was like....hey explain it to the kid before treating him like shit but by the end of it , I understood why. Not that I hate Shinji but dude is a career fuck up. Glad to see at least the cold treatment was deserved and they did it while still making you understand Shinji in a sense. He wanted to make things right but in pure Shinji fashion he fucked it up worse. Many things arent clear at all but IMO thats par for the course. Interested in seeing how they end this

I actually posted here back in 2013 about planning on watching the film and being not as excited due to all the reactions I saw.

I ended up not watching it.

I just watched it this weekend since my roommate got the blu-ray.

I loved it. It's Evangelion. I don't know what everyone was expecting. I'm kicking myself for waiting so long, haha.

Yup seemed fine to me, unless I'm not grasping the core of the movie.

So to be clear, I'm watching the series for the first time now but finished the three movies beforehand. I wanted to go in giving a fair shot to 3.33 after reading all the comments, and about halfway through I realize it didn't deserve it. What a strange path to take for the films after the first two were phenomenal and relatively straightforward. Anime is something I struggle getting into but I really enjoyed the first two and then the third reminded me so much why I struggle.

Series is good so far though, even if I'm just through what 1.11 retold.

So I just recently marathoned all three films, first viewing. I've been a big fan of the original series forever. Watched it in high school many years ago, rewatched it again at 29. I thought it really held up, the dialogue feels very mature. The show is dripping with subtext. So many anime programs spell it out for you over and over again, with characters literally repeating the words of other characters or explaining the on-screen action as it happens. It makes most anime unwatchable for me. Eva does this, too, but the conversations between characters feel like some old French art-house film.

IMO, Eva's world and mysteries were always just window-dressing. Things to move the plot and draw in the viewer. The show was always about the characters and exploring social dysfunction, arrested develooment and various syndrome and psychological concepts. The philisophical aspects were interesting but not as important.

The movies double-down on the exterior world and action and toss out so much meaningful character development and introspection. The stuff happening in the world of Eva is "cool" and "weird" but it's not really "good." It's pretty much non-sense.

After a week of mulling it over, I feel that the movies are definitely inferior. It adds nothing meaningful while pairing down what was. The animation is beautiful, but most characters get reduced to two-dimensional shadows of themselves. Even some of the more interesting events and world-building aspects of the original series were altered or removed in favor of thing that weren't really better. Some of the most shocking events and reveals are just completely absent or just flopped out there with no impact.

Sorry, folks. I'm sure 4.0 will be fun to watch but I don't think it's going to make up for what has been lost.

Had 3.0/3.33 been what the preview at the end of 2.22 was... They would have been better.
2.22 was a decent movie but I wouldn't say it was better than most of the series.

3.33 looked promising, but I guess it wasn't enough to stop 15 years of nothing. So overall, Rebuild it would have been meh.

Rewatched the majority of 1.11, 2.22, and 3.33 over the weekend, picking up on some extra stuff I had forgotten about or glossed over. Reading up on the events of 3.33 on the wiki and where things were at the end of the film helped pick up a bunch of stuff. Sadly, watching all three reminded me how much of a wait we will still have until 3.0+1.0 comes out, if it does at all.

Had 3.0/3.33 been what the preview at the end of 2.22 was... They would have been better.

I went into 3.33 thinking that it would cover what was included in the preview, which disappointed me that instead we time skipped so far ahead with little to no explanation of what happened in the time between. Even with Kaworu's explanation, it left alot of holes in why things are the way they are now. Even then, the rebuild of that would have probably not been as good as 2.22, the best of the Rebuild series. And that still has a wealth of problems as the best of the Rebuild films.
