Eurogamer: AC art used for Uncharted 4 trailer (Up: Naughty Dog responds)

I don't think you guys realize how easy it is to make a mistake like this.
Where the concept art likely came from was from early pre-production. With any project whether is a commercial, movie, video game you do loose story boards. These are almost always done to establish mood and basic flow of what your hoping to achieve. Its mostly a combination of concept art that is drawn and other stuff that is found. Its quickly edited to make it fit the idea of the shot your going for. Once thats done you scrap all the stuff you didn't make and start finalizing the vision with in house or bought assets. At this point the artist has a staggering amount of concept work finished and somehow along the lines made the mistake of not removing this piece it. They need some art over the wall its his job to know but he doesn't remember. Done

Yes he should have caught it and yes it still sucks but its much easier than you would ever imagine. We have sent out footage with branding still in the shot and had to do emergency overnight editing because someone just overlooked it.

very well said. I would imagine that any fellow artists watching this fiasco unfold were thinking "glad it wasn't me" instead of "those monsters how dare they"

If you walked out of a store, realized you forgot to pay for an item you were absent-mindedly holding, ran back in and paid for it, are you a thief?
Except they probably weren't absent-minded when stealing this image. They knew what they were doing.

Who gives a shit about some artwork. Ubisoft should considered how to make a non-glitchy Ass Ass Creed first and foremost and some good Ass Ass Creed game, not whining about some stolen artwork. They didn't done anything right in franchise since Ass Ass Creed 2.

What the hell.

Can someone explain how this thread got so big? I'm genuinely curious what more there is to discuss beyond the act and apology.

I still don't know if shandy706 was joking or not, lol.

If it was a joke, it was so deadpan, with (his?) name on the art and everything?

Never forget.

Ahahaha, wtf? Was going to ask what's that from till I saw the url in the quote. Omg.

The big question now is, will they keep the scene of Nate looking at the painting now? They would risk hundreds of people chuckling at it for 3 seconds

Can a level be redesigned this close to launch if it was based on stolen artwork? Or would it not matter?
I don't think that in-game scene looks all that similar to an artwork, beyond the superficial beach+cliff theme. I wouldn't think they need to redesign anything, or publicly do anything really beyond what they've already done at this point.

That said, how do you use someone's art by mistake? Ignorance and negligence aren't excuses for theft.
Google images has made it all too easy. Especially if you go into it with the state of mind in pre-production with "we need something like this, let's replace it with a real thing later". And later it gets forgotten. There is absolutely no way in hell anyone at their team involved in making this trailer could have known about this and willingly left it in the trailer, thinking that they'd get away with it. Everything gets discovered within seconds nowadays, and this was so prominently placed that it was impossible to miss. They must be kicking themselves over this as it was starting to become a bigger story than the trailer itself,

They said it was a mistake, fixed it and apologised lol.

What don't you get about the argument? I know they did, it was a stupid negligent mistake.

That being said saying "WHO CARES ITS A PAINTING ON A WALL ON A VIDEO GAME!" is quite literally= who cares if you steal?

Give me a break. I don't care what the object is, it doesn't change how important it is.

I said the same thing a bunch of pages back - would have been quick and easy to do, would have guaranteed no repercussions of any sort, and would have worked better cinematically to transition from 'photo' of next scene to 'live action' of next scene.

Then again maybe the picture is not meant to represent the exact same location we see in the game, just somewhere that looks somewhat similar.

Are you fucking kidding me? What *possible* gain could there be from deliberately thieving an image that there was *zero chance* of the internet missing?

This sort of thing happens all the time. It's happened to me, technically, though no one happened to catch it before I was able to fix it. You might not understand the general pipeline a video game development company goes through.

ND defence force is so strong.

Some of the responses in this thread are crazy
1) they blatantly stole artwork, they deserve to be taken to task and anyone bad mouthing ubi making it okay to steal from ubi need to have their fanboy goggles taken off
2) they admitted their huge mistake and apologized, there is no reason to continue on with a ND witchhunt

It's probably an important scene.

It's Nate ignoring Elena to look at the painting, much like the theme of the game seems to be giving up certain things to pursue an adventure.

So it's not like they can just cut it out. Hopefully they create a good image to put in the frame.

If i were Druckman, I would've been a lot more paranoid and cautious about checking over the art department after TLOU Boston Map debacle.

I addressed this in the follow up post. You're probably right but it still goes to show they need tighter QA.

Yeah definitely. We actually have a department that double checks every piece of art that we are using and we have to sign off of it. The reason for that is we had some licensed footage of the MET that we had bought and then two shots from the MET that we had as placeholders early in pre-production. We caught one of them but not the other. It was a huge problem and an expensive one so yeah as much as it can be a big inconvenience its definitely a necessary one.

He really should have just made sure to remove it early, because based on the way the final location looks the actual concept art probably looked extremely close to that AC4 sketch and would have been really difficult to distinguish from the rest.

Artists on games I've worked on have made this mistake, just not on released trailers.

Yeah it happens on almost every project we work on as well, thankfully someone usually catches it.

See these are the worst type of replies in here. STEALING IS WRONG. How can you not get that?
Do I need to even say that stealing is wrong? Who is disputing that? It just boggles the mind that this thread is 14 pages. Over a painting. On a wall. Temp art. Is this actually big news?

Ubi should launch the pirate island artwork of the year edition and make Bruce and Neil buy half the units as a penitence.

Wow...I thought this was some huge conspiracy story by skimming through, u guys need to get out more, laid or something.

Anyway, hopefully the artist get credited in the ending or something lol.

Is wrong.Yes.Agree.Now time to cancel the game or sky will close over us.

When the hell did I say that? I'm arguing for apologists who are saying this is no big deal just because they like ND and the games they make.

I don't think that in-game scene looks all that similar to an artwork, beyond the superficial beach+cliff theme.

Google images makes it INSANELY easy to filter out copyrighted images.

Or the state of being pressure to get a game released which unfortunately can lead to mistakes and oversights.

Can I just ask why if it was a placeholder, would they edit out the pirate?

I want you to cover your name and avatar and read your post.

See how douchey it seems?

lol

Nobody can make mistakes anymore. This is ridiculous. How is this thread still alive? They've apologized and resolved the issue. Move on with your lives people and play a potential GOTY candidate in 2 months.

You're quite literally saying, it's just a small item so who cares if it's stolen. You added temp art to this post btw.
