Sunset Overdrive is woefully misunderstood

Honestly the game bored me to absolute tears, there were moments where I was having fun, but 80 percent of the time it was just boring shooting with boring gameplay. I was so excited for the game before release, really disappointed it how I felt about it. Ended up finishing it, but I had to force myself to do so.

The over the top edginess, constant grinding, and basically the movement in the game in general pushed me away from it. I tried, gave it around a hour but it just wasn't really that fun to me. I will say it looks nice sometimes though, and all the vibrant colors are pretty but the gameplay mechanics just didn't click with me at all. Glad I got it for cheap otherwise I would have been really disappointed.

Refreshing doesn't make it a great game. Despite the off beat humor I don't believe anyone is necessarily missing out on playing the game itself. It was entertaining yet forgettable and didn't hold my attention too long.

It's the early Saint's Row/Crackdown of this gen. Mid-tier, solid open world game.

Crackdown was great tho, not mid-tier whatsoever. In fact, it's one of the few open world games I love. Platforming and a refreshing aiming system tied to great feeling gunplay (with some of the best explosions) made for a much more memorable game based on gameplay alone. The freedom to tackle missions in whatever order. Take down gangs from different angles in a non-linear fashion, which goes against GTA or other copycat's mission structures that are predicated on linear cinematic storytelling. Also, it performed really well which is a rarity for such a high-octane open world game.

If Sunset Overdrive really is to the level of quality of Crackdown, I should buy an Xbox One for this game sight unseen.

It takes a while for the controls to click, but the core gameplay's great. Traversal's really fun and that's the great strength of Sunset. It feels great to run around and grind/bounce/wall-run/air-dash on everything and chain it together.

I agree that the air dash should be unlocked earlier, but I was disappointed that there were only three traversal upgrades that unlocked. I was also expecting a whole other wave of crazy amps that never came.

I think the story's amusing at times, but it's not laugh out loud funny or anything. I think they could have made something which made a little more sense and meant more while still parodying the genre. Most of Mel Brooks' work does this for one example.

The challenges are good, but the story missions generally weren't anything special or memorable outside of a few things. I think that's something that could be improved.

I thought the finale was okay, but what plot there is doesn't pay off at all.
I would have liked to beat up some Fizz Co execs or something but you're just literally fighting the FizzCo HQ that turned into a robot. There's really no villain at all.
The smartphones do fill in some backstory but don't remedy that.

I wish it would get ported to the PC, so it could make some money and get a sequel.

Damn.
It's just a colorfully random aesthetic on top of stuff we've seen and played before.
I honestly haven't played a game that has these types of traversal mechanics or, at the very least, fits them all together in a cohesive package. You can say it's a bit Jet Set, but it's far more complicated and allows for more movement than that series ever did (and why not? JS is awesome but it wasn't designed for that and is a much, much older game).

Infamous? Sure, in that it puts a lot of enemies on screen and you have a range of movement and AOE attacks to get them. Still, Infamous does not offer the type movement mechanics that Sunset does (wall-running, grab-able edges).

Its funny how most of the people who say they don't like it/couldn't handle the humour have so obviously not even played the game lol... It doesn't take itself seriously at all and that is one of the best parts.. I think the marketing must have seriously soured people on this.. Misrepresented it even. I honestly thought i'd hate the "humour" but tbh its just flat out fun and i haven't even noticed it in a bad way at all.. More people should give it a go.

I didn't like it too much when I first got my Xbox One. But after getting the Elite controller I gave it another go and now I'm having a blast. The paddles really help when things get really hectic, which is pretty much all the time.

It's a fun game but people make it out to be this game that if you don't play it you're MISSING THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO GAMING. Its really not THAT good, just a nice fun colorful game.

The dragon fight too

Incredible

The Train, Dragon, Fizzie balloon boss and the ending boss were easily the best missions, there should have been more missions like that instead of a lot of them being go to this place and kill stuff them come back.

I thought it was a fun game, nothing amazing, but a fun, colorful, insomniac title. Game did not do well on xbox, not two ways about it, I'm one of microsofts staunchest defenders, and I think it would have done better as a multiplatform title. I dont know if there is anything keeping it off of PS4, but not putting out at least a pc port would be doing this game a huge disservice.

Hello and Welcome to Sunset TV.

I would play Sunset Overdrive every week just so I could tune into Sunset TV. Brandon did a great job as community manager/presenter/writer.

The 2 episode, Death of Sunset TV, are great but it was kinda sad knowing that the giant TV ingame wouldn't be updating with anything new anymore.

RIP in peace Sunset TV.

It's just a shame if you pick up the game now you will miss that entire interactive element.

I bought my xbox one because of this game. Easily one of my favorites in a long time. Such a great much of gameplay and it just gets better as the game goes on.

I freaking LOVED Sunset Overdrive. I thought I was going to find the humor grating but I actually enjoyed it. The LARPers were hilarious. The Dragon boss was incredible. Really, all the bosses were amazing.

It's been pretty cheap lately so people who haven't purchased it, should if they have an Xbox One.

I think they made one huge game design mistake, being on the ground is not really a viable option. The constant grinding/bouncing/shooting mechanic makes the game hard to get into (took me over an hour to start feel comfortable with the controls) and limits choice for different play styles. I honestly stopped playing it around 2 hours in because of it, and I think this is the reason that it hasn't sold well. That said, I am thinking about giving it another shot sooner or later, as I love the world and colors.

I thought it was a fun game, but not a great fit for the Xbox One crowd.

Huh?

Elaborate.

He makes a great point and I will elaborate what I think he/she meant by this.

Xbox crowd (here in the states) is without a doubt the shooter crowd, the gaming demographic that loves their racing, shooting, football, basketball games.

Last gen you can count on X360 to be the vanguard for MP shooters and games of that ilk.

When you think PlayStation you think of all of the above and in addition to that you think of zany, artsy and "different" types of games that totally go against convention and what is tried and true.

Parappa the Rapper on PS1, Frequency on PS2, Rain, Echochrome, The Puppeteer etc are games that most publishers would never greenlight because they don't appeal to the mass market.

Sunset Overdrive is just one such a game and the typical Xbox crowd usually don't buy these types of games. They know what they like and they stick to it

Granted this new IP launched in November of 2014 and couldn't duke it out with the established juggernauts that come out around the holidays. The CoDs and MCCs, Far Crys and Ass Creeds that came out.

I played all mainline Ratchet games so I think I would enjoy this game, not enough to make me buy an Xbox One though, if it remains exclusive I doubt I'll ever play it (unless the xbox one gets an exclusive Project Zero or someother favorite series of mine).

It is a wonderful game, one of my favorites of the generation still. I know it ultimately underperformed but I hope that there is enough good will with the name to make a sequel a possibility.

Brandon left Insomniac too :(

Did you unlock the air dash?

I expect this is how a lot of people responded to the game. OP needs to remember that most people have a terrible sense of humor. Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men are two of the most popular and beloved shows of the last decade in America.
what the fuck is this

It wasn't awful like Knack was, but it wasn't amazing by any stretch of the imagination. It was a decent open world action game. Sort of the in the same vein as Gravity Rush, and with a sense of humor that's pretty niche.

People who don't own an Xbox One didn't miss out on much. However if you own an Xbox One, I would suggest to try it out if you're on a drought phase.

Best wishes.

I thought it was a great game and would love to see the series continue. It'd be great to see a cross-platform XB1/PC release and a change to the coop. I love how the coop was presented, but I'd love to be able to play the entire campaign coop with a buddy or my wife as opposed to the wave-based one. Weapons/Humor/Art were pretty spot on. I'm not a huge Punk music fan, but I thought it was well implemented and fit the tone very well. I played the first expansion too, but haven't touched it since then.

Brandon left Insomniac too :(

Yeah I was confused the other day when I randomly clicked on a Inside Gaming video on YouTube and seen him there. Looked into it and seen he left Insomniac to work with them.

OT fantastic game. I loved the traversal and it was just a lot of fun to play. It was game that didn't take itself seriously and was there to make sure you had fun. Customization was great too. I really hope we can get a sequel sometime in the future. MS and Insomniac please.

Fargarths storyline is absolutely the highest point in the game. And that's pretty tough to top considering it followed another great story arc with the Bushido storyline.

Absolutely the best Xbox One game, best open world game out right now.

And..Chaos Squad Awesomeness while wrecking havoc on OD. Especially the overcharge cooker night defense with 6+ players is awesome.

It never should have been a console exclusive, that's what killed it, unfortunately. I'm sure the studio did fine with whatever the deal was with Microsoft, but the IP was sacrificed for it. There was never going to be enough Xbox One owners at the time of release to make it successful.

I think it would get a better reception if it simply was ported to PC for like, 30 bucks or something. Sometimes a PC port can be huge for a game.

Outstanding game in every respect. A bright and zany world, great art style and character customization, incredibly fun mechanics. Too bad its humor seems not to have clicked with a lot of people. It's unfortunate how trash like Sandler movies can be successful while a great game like Sunset Overdrive underperforms. (Different audiences maybe, but still.) The LARPers alone show that the writers knew what they were doing.

I might have, but i honestly don't remember, was a long time ago now.

I was feeling the same until I unlocked air dash and then it clicked a bit better, you could grind, jump and air dash in mid air so you cover more ground quicker.

Problem is you don't unlock it until Act 2 mission 2 which is 14 missions into the main game. It really should have been an unlock sooner.

My problem isn't that I couldn't get around fast, it's the fact that you always have to be above ground one way or another, or the mobs will kill you real fast.
