Gamergate convinced an anti-sex trafficking org to join crusade against NoA employee

Did Gamer Gate even bother to read her paper? I mean, like the first paragraph sums up how odd it is to go after her...

It's literally about how we shouldn't try and enforce our Western values on Japanese entertainment we deem worthy of being censored---she's on their side when it comes to censoring Japanese media!

This is what pisses me off the most about Gamer Gate, they don't fucking care how obvious they make it that they're hypocrites.

GG treated Jack Thompson like their best bro because he said some not nice things about Anita once. This isn't a movement that is anchored by logic.

While the Internet isn't exactly responsible for GG, many websites, such as Twitter, condone their existence by allowing them a space to voice their stupid shit and to continue harassing others.

Exactly. Websites such as Twitter.

Once more; the internet isn't the problem. Twitter being the fuckin' Wild West is the problem.

This is yet another file to add to the "Gamegate was always a hate mob" cabinet. If it's not yelling at Nintendo for censoring Fire Emblem without any understanding of how localization works (not saying you can't have problems with Fates' localizations because there are legitimate complaints to be had), it's inciting a hate mob to attempt character assassination and fire a woman because she said a thing.

In short, screw Notch.

To the latter point, I saw a tweet floating around where she talks about how she's advocated for lowering the age of consent. I can see how that could end up being used against her to make that argument.

edit: found it -- https://twitter.com/alisonrapp/status/663605234485235712

O.o

wat

I googled and found this quote of hers-

Well, those goobergate assholes really want a shitshow, but well, this is one of those things you don't touch with a 20 foot pole.

i don't know what gamergate quite is and i haven't been involved in that discussion. or the fire emblem discussion. i don't know who this woman is or know about any agenda against her. But if she is arguing in favor of lowering age of consent (which is where i imagine the pedo comments come from?) and laxer porn laws, and also arguing in favor of "depictions of sexualized minors", would Nintendo really want someone like that to represent their company?

Do I or have I grossly misinterpreted something from those tweets? i'm seriously asking, i'm honestly not in the know about gamergate and i don't have a pitchfork hunting anyone or anything.

Losers exist everywhere.

This is a bunch of lonely pests that exist anywhere. They are the problem not games.
Games absolutely were part of the equation, the constant terrible portrayals of women and lack of inclusiveness in the the industry that still continues in many ways, (look at many high profile Japanese games released this year and last year for instance), bred a large community of misogynists who go crazy when minorities and women want to be treated like actual people instead of stereotyped and idealized for the an intended 18-35 year old hetero white male audience, ofc not all gamers are like that, and at this point the number of them will most definitely get smaller because a lot o high profile developers finally got the memo but it's a fucking shame that there is such a large contingent of them that they have a movement that has been active for years dedicated to shit like this.

To be honest if someone said they sided with laxing child porn possession laws depicting manga characters in that offtopic thread 5-6 months ago about Japan banning it, hell would of dawned on them. Yet she states it there on page 48.

Man, imagine getting so rattled by not seeing underboob and shit in your videogames that you make a coordinated effort to get someone fired and unemployable. And then framing it as some sort of culture war.

Can you imagine having so little going on in your own life that you deem this a good way of spending your time and energy? Pathetic. I feel bad for Alison.

Also, isn't that non-profit tied to Kevin Smith in some way? I swear I've heard their name before. Is the Wayne Foundation owner that rash to threaten NOA on Twitter over this nonsense or is something else going on?

I admit: I'm confused.

Where did Gamergate convince Jamie Walton to go after Alison Rapp? Did this happen in private messaging where we won't be able to see it? Or does Jamie identify with Gamergate? I'm not defending those idiots, I'm just not seeing the connection here.

Considering that her thesis is available to read right on her LinkIn, I would imagine Nintendo is aware of it. But no, GGers think they found some dark secret of hers. They make me ill.

What makes this particularly tricky is that in academia--and I say this as someone who works in academia--people tend to make wacky, contentious arguments that they might not necessarily believe. I don't know if Rapp actually believes that the age of consent should be lowered, or that child pornography laws should be relaxed. But we're living in an age where people gleefully use tweets and other social media postings to get folks fired, so a tweet like that doesn't do her any favors.

She's talking about when she was doing gender studies stuff in academia prior to working for Nintendo.

To be honest if someone said they sided with laxing child porn possession laws depicting manga characters in that offtopic thread 5-6 months ago about Japan banning it, hell would of dawned on them. Yet she states it there on 48.

Someone posting on a messageboard is a completely different story to an academic putting in a thesis or paper into a peer-reviewed journal.

I think they just tweeted her a bunch of doctored evidence and articles claiming she was pro-pedophillia and she just believed them without doing her homework.

I just looked at this woman's thesis and it made me queasy as the father of two girls. No question she's a child porn apologist. I don't care about this Gamergate crap but it is weird to me that someone with those extreme views would be employed in such a public-facing position by Nintendo.

Motherfucker.

Hope she gets out of it okay. Was dragged into this rabbit hole last week after GG attacked my Twitter and I can't imagine dealing with that on a daily basis.

I don't buy it. If it wasn't games for this brand of losers it'd be movies or tv or "sjws" or any number of things.

This type of impotent right wing rage is going strong in places totally unrelated to gaming. Whilst issues around depictions obviously exist I don't buy the argument that this is purely a video game problem than a social one.

I don't understand what they are even after?

GG supporters should go outside, talk a walk, and think about what they are doing with their life, maybe have a social interaction.

But who'd defend the ethics in game journalism (tm) if they're gone? Who is going to look through archived tweets to find vague proof of "collusion"? They're simply doing god's work and we should thank them.

Joking aside, this seems nothing more than another GreasyGorillas "operation", trying to get people they don't like fired from their jobs with vague accusations.

Without the internet, Gamergate wouldn't have thrived.

Are you insane?

Shit heads were targeting womem, harassing them and indicting them of ridiculous things long before the internet.

Sometimes people drive drunk.
Sometimes people text message on their cell phones while driving.
Sometimes people are just shitty drivers because of they have shitty attitudes and think they own the road.

Want to indict highways? Want to tear them up?

Another thing they are freaking out about that has nothing to do with "ethics in game journalism".

And the outrage they have is so damn ironic considering how much they always complain about "outrage culture" and the evil "SJWs"

Considering that her thesis is available to read right on her LinkIn, I would imagine Nintendo is aware of it. But no, GGers think they found some dark secret of hers. They make me ill.

This is the funniest (read: absolutely not funny) thing. She's not hiding this shit, Nintendo certainly knows.

Reminds me of when Lindsey Ellis (Nostalgia Chick) was talking about constant internet harassment, and how people would bring up her abortion like it was something they dug up from her past. When in reality, she made a documentary about it and has never once tried to hide it

So to recap, GG is hurling accusations of pedophilia advocacy as a retaliatory strike against... NOA not including a slice of content in their game that encouraged the player to stroke the faces and tousle the hair of cooing young girls?

Jesus kickboxing Christ, the obliviousness to irony in the GG movement is astounding.

Jesus. What the fuck did she say that pissed off Gamergate so much?
Something along the lines of "I'm a woman, I work for [videogame company]," I'm sure. That absolute bitch.

I don't entirely disagree, however I don't feel she should lose her job over this.

They just released a game where adults and children can marry and have kids y'know.

I'm not racist but...

It ofc is a social problem, however, considering it's called gamergate, it can be inferred the majority of GG supporters were affected by gaming first and foremost. Especially considering that the movement was started for the sole purpose of harassing the hell of a developer who was a woman while hiding under the thinly veiled excuse of "ethics in games journalism." That's not saying that they weren't influenced by other similar stupid shit in other mediums.

They'd better get Episode 8 out pronto so the MRAs have something fictional to be outraged about again instead of harassing real women.

As mentioned above a lot of academic papers, particularly those focused on ethics make arguments that the writer may not actually hold. Thinking about these things, taking positions contrary to one's own and having views at 20 that would not be palatable to someone five years later is not unusual.

For those wondering about the Wayne Foundation - please see my posts on either page. It's a Kevin Smith thing discussed in one of his podcasts.

I honestly don't know either.

BUT...she's an educated, opinionated young person who is clearly passionate about the topic...and seemingly has yet to learn that once you put something on the internet...it never goes away.

You would think that a generation that has grown up in this kind of culture would actually know this...

Gamergate is insane...yes.

But you can also add Miss Rapp to the long list of people that really don't know how to manage their social media presence.

MTE. Nintendo has had enough problems with pedophiles and similar stuff in the past (remember Swapnote?)

I think they will shut this down real quick. I get it she's a feminist, it's cool and all but advocating for child porn is completely damn wrong, you can't go that far.

You write all sorts of shit in academia, they are the definition of scholarly hot takes.

I once wrote an argument in favor of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a moderate leader in Iran, like a year before he cancelled elections and attempted to become a despot. It was a devil's advocate position paper, essentially.

That's how I see it. I see it quite often, not the same subject matter though.

Yeah, I'm sure I'm missing something as this is absolutely mind-boggling to me.

Is it because she's just the easiest NoA target they could find, who happened to make a random statement they don't like?

Something along the lines of "I'm a woman, I work for [videogame company]," I'm sure. That absolute bitch.

Well...yes.

But it WOULD be interesting to learn at what point did she just happen to show up on Gamergate's radar?

They clearly have a bunch of foaming-at-the-mouth zealots scouring the internet for things to bite onto but...it's a big internet and there's lots of information on it. I'd like to know why all of a sudden she's on their shit list...aside from the fact that she is a she.

If it wasn't games it'd be something else. Reddit, mens rights, anti pc bullshit existed before gamergate. I put zero stock in what they choose to call it.

Look at Trump, who attracts the same brand of loser, is that because of videogames too?

FUCK GG but as someone who stepped the fuck away from academia recently, I have to say these kinds of arguments were super common due to heavy hitters in post-structuralism and shit having some pretty fucked up and out there views, going as far as campaigning against age of consent laws in France (basically: boundaries do not limit desire but cause it to spiral, i.e. shit that sounds good on paper but should not translate to real world consequences like offering less protection to minors). So, yeah, she actually sounds hella skeevy tbh.

The best class that I had as an undergraduate constantly put me in a position of taking ethical arguments that I disagreed with. There is no better way to think about complex issues than to be forced to truly consider the issue from the other perspective. Doing so helps you see flaws in your actual beliefs as well as strengths in opposing beliefs. At the end you'll typically still have the same views, but they'll be more informed and you won't fall back on the absolutism which leads people to think that those who disagree are just dumb/evil, etc...

But you can also add Miss Rapp to the long list of people that really don't know how to manage their social media presence.

I'm not so sure about that. She seems quite adept at leveraging the very real harassment she receives to her benefit.

I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt for now that she's not in favor of child porn.. As long as she isn't fired from NOA I think she comes out of this with a big win and a lot of gain

She has pointed out before that, when she's on NOA streams, people on twitter talk about her appearance, things of a sexual nature, and call her a dumb bitch. To the point where she actually tracked it and released the numbers. Gamer Gate decided they didn't like this pointed out and have made her the face of everything they dislike.
