I'm 20 and hope to move out later in the year.
I've lived on my own since college. Did live with my grandparents for a few months after getting a job but I don't count that since it was a transition.
Don't get me wrong, wouldn't change that but not dropping 800 a month on rent would be damn appealing.
I'm 24 and still live with my parents. Both of them have bad backs, so I pull my weight by doing the heavy lifting around the house. When I'm done with school I don't see myself leaving unless I need to relocate, why bother when I'm not interested in dating and get along great with my folks?
The rush to move out only makes sense if you can't stand your parents or just want to jump into the dating scene.
problem is, if you wanted to do something about it, realistically you'd be throwing your own kid out on the streets. If I were a parent, I am not sure how I would feel if my kid/s still lived at home into their late 20s/30s.

I was expecting a couple of grand when you were asked if you had anything saved, but damn, son. How do you have $12K and not have your own place? You could easily move out on half of that.I've saved up a little. About 12,000ish. I don't exactly have a plan per se. I guess, get another job maybe?

Nothing like nearing 30 and the idea of owning a home still a pipedream due to CA housing prices.
I'll rent my grave too I guess.
I graduate in june, and I hope to make about 50-60k a year. I still don't see how I can afford a house in Ca. My parents home is pretty small and the appraised value is at about 500,000. Sometimes I worry that i'll never be able to afford a house of my own.
I'd love to have 12K right now. As it is, I barely make enough each month to pay the rent. I mean, I do pay it, and I have enough left to buy food/pay bills, but not enough to afford luxuries, etc. 12K, though, even 6K - man, you can get a nice flat, do it up, and pay bills and buy groceries for a couple of months.12k is nothing, at his age he should have saved up 100k+ living with his parents like this.

Yeah, but see, you can do all of that without having to wear pants.pretty normal for this generation
ofc you have to deal with the shaming by previous generations that had everything easier
who could buy a house on their 9-5 and didnt go to college
yeah I love working some shitty dead end job with people I hate
then coming home to an empty apartment with no loved ones
then making my own dinner in silence, maybe with the tv on to fake human interaction
going to bed early so I can do it all over again the next day, day after day
id just put a bullet in my brain and save some time
man this hurts me particularly right now. I moved to the Bay Area from Atlanta, GA last year. I went from a $1100 mortgage payment to a $3300 rent payment =x fucking a

God damn. There's no way that the salary increase that you're getting is worth that rent increase. There's lots of other cities to live in you know....
Right, there's nothing wrong with a situation like that. I think the stigma comes from the idea that the person is leeching off their parents. You are not in that situation, but I know some people who are.American culture will have you believe this is looked down upon, to move out at 18 or ASAP. But, really there is nothing wrong with living at home in your 30s. I'm 26, still live at home, and probably will for a while. The reason my family and I live a comfortable life is because we all support each other financially. I was on my own for a few years when I was away at school. I had to drop out and come home because my family was struggling financially. Fuck pride or feeling like it's wrong to live at home past 18, I flushed those feelings down the drain and came home. Now, couldn't be happier. Since moving in with my parents I've helped my family go from living in a different run down apartment every year to now having a mortgage on our very own home. To see them not struggling anymore to get by and see them happy makes me happier than anything.
Now, I still live with them in this new house. We all split rent and bills. I'm saving tons of money and probably won't leave them for years. I don't see anything wrong with sticking together as family.
My questions for people who live at home are always:
1. Do you pay rent/utilities?
2. Do your parents make you meals everyday? Or do you cook sometimes for yourself/them?
3. Do you always do your own laundry?
A lot of people go to hotels, or their cars 😂To those that don't move out... how do you date? Are you bringing partners back to your place?

I'd consider moving out early and being on my own two feet one of the most important things I ever did and it made me the person I am today. Self-sufficient, independent, responsible and best of all, completely free.
BTW, I moved out at 18 and I have an amazing relationship with my parents.
Honestly, if you truly like the situation you're in and are afraid of change, you've got no reason to go pack your bags. But my god, I wouldn't trade with any of you for all the money in the world and i'm probably lying if I told you I don't pity you a little bit. I can't even really properly explain in just text what truly living on my own did for me. For me, that's where my life really started.

I'm never moving out. Paying rent is a scam and loans too.
You don't pay rent to your parents? How about contributing to bills? I can understand living with parents if you have some skin in the game, but I'm not quite sure why some parents don't at least ask for something for bills and expenses.
