the only solution to that , is a political one, you really can't stop that kind of insurgency militarily, that problem already existed since the Spanish colonial times

Duterte's solution is Federalism, like the Bangsamoro proposal , they can have their own Muslim state

I have ordered "America's Boy: A Century of United States Colonialism in the Philippines " and should receive it between March 3-14. It's a hardcover and used, so it cost me £10, so I hope it's in an okay condition. I can't wait to read it, it's the one book I am most excited about currently. Especially with all of the Marcos talk in the media etc.

I'm not Pro or Anti the Marcos dynasty, as I have to educate myself more on the subject matter but I'm looking forward to reading that book. Hopefully my cousin won't start any heated discussions with me on my vacation, I'll just scruff it off. Right now, I am leaning towards anti-Marcos but I would also like to learn much more about the good things he did for our nation.

My family was close to the Marcoses back in the day, and it is actually true that Cory was somewhat vengeful (naturally, her husband was murdered) and put a stop to a number of Marcos-originated projects that could have benefited the country.
Check this out: http://www.update.ph/2016/02/many-p...-1986-that-could-have-helped-ph-bongbong/2800

Also, we owe Imelda for the heart center, CCP, folk arts, lung center, kidney center, and promoting the arts in the country. She is not an evil person.

I also have a quoted post here from my mom's friend on Facebook: "have a story straight from a witness. When ninoy was killed, marcos was secretly at the heart center...so sick. My sister in law was a doctor there. Marcos could barely sit up and his dept secretaries n commissioners thought he was dying. When he was informed of ninoy's death, and with all his dept heads in the room inc gen ver n imelda, he immediately stood up and poibting his finger to all of those in the room and saying repeatedly "WHO AMONG YOU HAD HIM KILLED?" And he started cursing in ilocano all those inside. He was so angry akala ng mga, doctors daw na aatakehin sya,sa puso. Thry had to calm him down. According to my sis in law, when marcos made his first tv appearance to comment on ninoy's death, he did it from the heart center on his bed, with pillows propping him up and angling cameras to make it appear that he was seating upright in malacanang with all the decor and props from his office in malacanang in the room at the heart center."

I can't comment on the others, because I am not really sure if I have the correct data on the others, but I'll comment on ABS-CBN ('cause I do freelance work there).

Cory didn't "give" ABS-CBN to the Lopezes. The Lopezes have always owned it through a merger (they owned the Chronicle Broacasting Network, which merged with the Alto Broadcasting System, which was once owned by a prior Philippine president, Quirino). When Martial Law started, Marcos' soldiers seized ABS-CBN and its properts. Gerry Lopez (then-president of ABS-CBN) was imprisoned, but managed to escape and find his way to the US. In the meantime, Marcos used whatever was left with ABS-CBN to broadcast several new channels: BBC-2 and MBS-4. He installed one of his cronies as head of the company.

During People Power, revolutionaries managed to storm the compound where ABS-CBN was located and to stop the Marcos-run channels from airing. The revolutionaries then used the station to air the ongoing revolution.

So yes, in effect, Cory did give ABS-CBN back to the Lopezes, but the Lopezes always owned it and it was just forcibly seized from them during Martial Law.

(Note: I work with a department currently retrieving lost tapes that were seized during Martial Law. Apparently when the soldiers took over ABS-CBN, most of its archives were burned. That's why we don't have tapes of shows dating back the People Power revolution. We've tried looking for people who may have recorded whole series and news reports during and before the Martial Law, to no avail. The oldest footage I managed to get hold of was a documentary about World War 2, which I think was made right after WW2.)

I am not sure about the debt, but while the amount may be higher now, you must also compare that to the current GDP, which is so much larger during Martial Law. You can see a graph here (Edit 2: LOL I thought this was a graph dating back to Martial Law all the way to the recent years. It's just from 2006 to 2014 lol my bad. See how I'm awful I am when it comes to math and economy?)

Admittedly, I am in no position to talk about debts and economies, 'cause I don't really understand all of it. So lol.

--EDIT: If you guys want, I can send you/scan you some of the readings I had from my Philippine History professor in college. Part of our discussion was Marcos' rise to power and why he was able to do so. It also tackled some of the spotty parts of the Martial Law announcement, and goes on to talk about the Martial Law. (Or I may be compressing several readings into one).

But didn't she spend a whole lot money on herself and put the Philippines in debt?

I literally beg you to share this. As a subject that is very close to me and my family, and the high interest it has, I would wholeheartedly appreciate it, if you can share this with us!

Owz, I gotta read about one person at a time. Guess I could do Marocs when it arrives in 2-3 weeks time, and do Corazon Aquino now. Does he/she have any connection to the Marcos dynasty or era?

Thanks for this. I am gonna add it to my wishlist for now, as I have a lot of books to read currently. I might download the sample sometime today.

But how do I know which books are fake and true in regards to Marcos? My cousins from Ilocos says, that all the books about Marcos are fake because they were made to hurt his dynasty. I don't know if I would like to believe that.

How much work do you want to put into this? I like The Philippines Reader because it is well researched. If you don't trust the writer or think the book is fake then you can read their end/foot notes and cross check their sources.

p.s. I'm pro democracy

No, it's not that I don't trust the books myself. I'll take a look at it in due time, thanks.

check sources, cross referencing etc. for example economic data is hard to argue when it's verified by outside sources like the UN etc

Now I understand why it's also a good idea to read about Corazon Aquino and her dynasty. It seems like they have up against each other for a very long time. I'm also gonna look into how the whole political system works, and if they have parties and such, seeing that they are a democracy.

I'm also starting to read my "Tagalog Basics" today. I have to do a big effort in learning the language.

Haven't been in the homeland for more than 25 years and I keep hearing about this Marcos revisionist history shit and how the Philippines was better off with him.

Anybody knows if FilipinoCupid is legit, or if it is just a ton of fake profiles messaging you, so that you will pay up for a membership, to be able to read your messages?

I got around 10 messages the first 5 minutes on the site. Seems shaky to me. A 1-month membership is $40 as well.

PS: I'm not looking for a date. Just checking out if there are some interesting people to be friends with, when I go to the Philippines next month. Love meeting new people.

[edit]
Wow, I don't think this site is for real. Got 16 messages, and some of them have the exact same headings from independent profiles. It's a scam to get people to pay up I think. I am actually pretty sure. So much scam on my Internet this last week.

It's a scam. There are real ones, but they are not legal.

Where will you be at?

Marcos was a dictator and people were abused and stripped of their rights. But the only postive thing that happened was corruption was centralized into one person. All of the current infrastructures in the Philippines was built on the Marcos era. All the tax payer money right now is distributed through out different levels of government, so in return there's no money for the people. The current infrastructure in the Philippines is crumbling. Even internet is so bad and slow right now.

Hi fellow countrymen.
I am currently creating an RPG game that is on Kickstarter right now.
Basically, it's an RPG game where you play as the monster instead of the heroes.
More details can be found in the kickstarter page.
Please support if you like the premise. :)
Of course you should support based on your interest, not solely because it is made by a Filipino. :P

Getting that many messages already? 100% sign of a scam.

Yeah, I dropped FilipinoCupid quickly.

Janine Tugonon (if anybody knows her, 2nd runner up of Miss Universe), just told me Pia Wurtzbach will be in the Philippines next month. I will die on the spot, if I get to see her.

Dude just get tinder or go to a club. You'll get better results there. And yes Pia's hot lol.

I dislike Tinder. But yeah, I already have plans which clubs I'm gonna pay a visit next month. It's funny how Charmane Star also now texted me back, telling me she will be in the Philippines soon. Hopefully by April-May. And Allan K told me to call him when I arrive in Manila.

I'm just wary, because I don't know how safe one is in a city like Angeles City at night?

In my experience, it's pretty safe if you're with someone. The only danger is if you are alone you might get held up or get your wallet picked, especially if you use public transportation. Just be mindful of your stuff. But people are generally friendly there.

Great advice.

Keep small change in your pocket as people will beg you for money. Mothers and little kids mostly.
Never take your wallet out.

Lots of Marcos talk here. Might as well contribute

I just came back from there. Not one problem at all.

Just kindly say no and shake your head when people try to sell you shit non stop.
Especially on Walking Street.

Great advice! I don't think I have ever been around Angeles City. I wonder who I can bring with me though. Almost everybody I know have gone abroad. Maybe my cousin wanna join. I heard about something called Dollhouse, a disco club kind of thing, and it seems to be very popular? Have never been there myself.

It's probably too much to ask, but can you translate the comic panel into English? I'm sorry, I only just started learning Tagalog. :(

I'm gonna read all of those links. It's nice to also get another perspective on the whole Marcos regime. Hopefully I receive my book either today or early next week.

Don't forget Marcos also banned Video games, Voltes V and other similarly-themed animes.

Revenge of the Voltes V generation

Made a rough translation
Marcos: I want buildings in the Reclamation Area
Imelda: I want a bridge connecting Samar to Leyte

General Fabian: Sir, the 50,000 projects that you wanted are all done. Are we going to use the citizens taxes to pay for the costs?
Marcos: no... that tax money will go to my pocket.

General Fabian: What?? how are we going to pay for all of this?
Marcos: We will borrow money and the citizens descendants will pay for them (installment).

General Fabian: Sir..what about those people who thinks and will criticize us?
Marcos: Brand them as Communists and the rest is up to you.

Dumbass motherfuckers: The best president ever "clap clap clap"

Thank you for the translation po!

I have also ordered some more books to learn Tagalog. I'm starting to get the grasp of some very basic stuff and how words are used compared to English. Very excited about it.

I'm also being set up for the Binibining Pilipinas 2016 coronation night, so I should be reserved for that already. Hopefully I get to flex my newfound photography skills there. Pia Wurtzbach will be there as well.

Hopefully, all of my plans actually turn out good for next month. I'm preparing like crazy.

Ugh, about 2 weeks ago I booked three promo seats for Singapore. Now, Cebu Pacific has a "Piso fare" promo.

I also can't book a new flight because of the traffic on the website.

I really wish I have enough (twice) income so I won't rely on these stupid ass promos.

I see Poe Grace has been cleared to run for presidency. What were she charged of again?

Kim Ross, has been disqualified from Binibining Pilipinas as well.

Poe's time of residency in the Philippines, and the rule that natural-born Filipino citizens are allowed to run (Poe is adopted).

And congrats to me, I was able to book a flight to Palawan this September!

Which was the best cinema in Manila again? Somebody suggested one earlier in the thread.

I don't know the best, but cinemas at Ayala Malls (Glorrieta, Gateway) are good.

Just curious if anyone has watched it yet, an interesting look at Abortion in the Philippines and how sex is still a somewhat taboo topic among the general public.

I personally am all for Pro-choice and Sex Education in the Philippines, considering the social stigma around pre-marital sex.

I'm not really comfortable with Abortion, even when done legally. Not saying that I'm 100% against it.

Sex education is a must.

I like cinema 1 and 2 at Greenbelt 3 cinemas in Makati. The majority of SM cinemas I have been to have been terrible.
I also frequent Century City mall cinemas and Rockwell cinemas, both in Makati.

Thanks guys. I might watch Civil War in Manila after all. But remember somebody mentioning one specific cinema which is the best and don't have the audience sitting with phones.

Only 1 month till I'm there in the Philippines! :)

It's been about six years, but I went to see The Dark Knight at Greenbelt 3, and it was pretty nice. Reserved seating, comfortable seats, with a more premium equipment setup (I forgot how they advertised this), but as far as I can tell, the equipment used is what's normally used by big theatre chains here in North America. Mind you, things may have changed since.

What I actually really liked about it was how small the theatre is. When I was back in the Philippines at the time, I saw The Dark Knight in the afternoon in the middle of July. I believe everyone was at school, since the school year runs through the summer, so the theatre ended up only having about 10 people overall, and I was seated at dead centre.

I'd recommend this one, Madridista.

And you can do some shopping afterwards. It's a pretty nice plaza, though I don't remember much about the stores except the high end clothing store (the name escapes me, the place was weird as hell).
