I was wrong about the party: Final Fantasy X

Ive gone on record saying how I thought this and X-2 were hot trash. But, im currently playing XHD on PS4, and I have to say, I was wrong. My initial bad reaction was from playing these games at a very young age. Part in due to confusion over the systems, which im learning now are no where near as confusing as I remember them being, especially the sphere grid, which I now think is actually a really intuitive way to level up. Tidus isn't nearly as grating as I remember him being either. Narrarator tidus though, is far in a way better than in game tidus, with his near constant whining. The story is really interesting as well. I had forgotten most of it but going back in as an adult im finding it really intriguing. The characters, even though some of the english va is hit or miss, are all mostly very engaging. Its awesome to see wakka's inner struggle as the game progresses on. Anyway, the long short of it is that my basis for this game was incorrect and I can totally see why people love it so much! We will see how X-2 holds up for me, but right now, im eating crow on behalf of my 10 year old self.

Edit: I still hate blitzball

But, but, but I heard that modern gamers do not enjoy games with turn-based battle systems.
WTF, OP you can't like this!

(It's a great game. Enjoy!)

FFX's story is surprisingly grim.

A large chunk of the characters throughout the game are
unsent dead people
.

Constant whining? I don't remember him whining much, the only time I remember him whining was in the flash back scenes where he says he hates his dad. And it's completely justified since Jecht was an asshole towards him when he was a kid.

The game is great and is easily my favorite FF game. I loved the story, cast of characters(except for Kimarhi since he's so forgettable), and the battle system. I do like to pretend X-2 never existed though, oh and yeah the Blitzball sucks.

None of the mainline Final Fantasy games are hot trash. All of them have at least one redeeming aspect.

Yeah the voice acting can be rough. Another criticism that can be lobbied at X is how linear it is. Probably not a big deal on a first playthrough but on replays getting through those first few hours watching the same old cutscenes with the same old gameplay gets really old really fast. Luckily X-2, XII, and onwards let you skip cutscenes and had more gameplay freedom.

Anyone have any explanations as to why they didn't put in a skip cutscene option for X HD?

Is it a technical reason?

It's a good thing you've finally seen the light. It's better late than never.

Final Fantasy X is still an all-time great.

I was great at Blitzball, haha. Plus, you get some great items from it.

I played when I was 16, and I played again at 26. It's still terrible, but I'm glad you got enjoyment out of it, opinions and all that.

I have such weird feelings about X. Like, I hate probably half the cast, I hate blitzball, the story is kinda meh for me... But hey, it's fun. Best combat of the whole damn franchise as far as I'm concerned.

10 was always great OP, anyone who says otherwise is wrong. 10-2 was always hot garbage outside of the battle system. That's also true

Good for you man. I said this in the other topic where lots of people were trashing the game. Today its still one of the best RPG's ever made. The story, music and the world all fit together very well.

It's a fantastic game. I do hate Blitzball though.

One quick question. How far in until you get the level spheres? Im about 7 hours in and havent come across one yet to unlock level 2 spheres. Also hopefully the gameplay will get me through X-2

Final Fantasy X's turn for the worst ambush sort of scene was dark as f. It was probably my first heavy feeling of dread for characters in a game and this was like 13 years ago.

FFX's voice acting is probably one of the worst parts of the game. If that was redone, I think the game would be better received.

A little confused as to which scene you might be referring to.Is this right after Seymour first fight ?

Well, it feels like everything in the game is about death straight from the get go. I mean, not a handful of hours into the game and you're already
attending a funeral ceremony!

Of all the FF games this is probably the best to revisit as an adult because there's a lot under the surface that doesn't quite bubble up until you have a more discerning eye.

The game starts with a city's destruction, so yeah...

And the female protagonist is basically Charon.

The reason FFX is so grim compared to previous FFs is because the project started out as an original concept, titled "Seventeen: Angelic Impact X Devil's Shock" and unrelated to the FF series. It was conceived by Yusuke Naora, the art director.

When the project became FFX they toned down the heavy Moebius influence and integrated Sakaguchi's Gaia philosophy in the world setting, but the story is still very different than anything they did before in the series.

What woooah as a huge FFX I've never seen this before and it looks amazing.

this was 13 yrs ago so i may be remembering it whack but they are talking to a council and its getting clear over the course of the scene that the ally council are anything but

WHOA! Didn't know that.

X is one of the best jRPGs of all time. X-2 too. Incredible games. But X resonates more with me. Utterly beautiful experience. I love them both dearly.

I absolutely love the story in this game. The constant dread of Sin is all-permeating. Blitzball was really creative, too. Not to mention that the story went in some really unexpected directions.
Jecht is Sin. The time travel lead-up was a red herring, and Dream Zanarkand is a totally different place than Zanarkand. Yuna is going to die. Tidus isn't real. Auron has been dead for ten years. Yevon is a sham. Sin is humanity's fault (saw this one coming, but the execution was what made it shine)
So many "oh shit" moments that still resonated with me when I played the HD version again years later.

X-2 has a great thematic setup with recovering from the threat of Sin, and does tell some intriguing stories.
Shuyin being the OG Tidus was awesome.
Too bad the J-pop nonsense was garbage and the story was mostly vapid and pointless. Great battle system wasted on a bad game.

I still love the gameplay. So good.

For some reason, I never knew this, and that's awesome.

Wow. If that is an early Yuna design, I really like it. More than what they ended up with. I'd love an art book of FF X if there are any good ones.

Thats really interesting! Explains why its such a stylistic departure for the series.

Switching party members at will during battle should be standard.

I agree 100 percent. Just tonight Yuna basically saved my entire party with a summon when I tagged her in.

Auron
Jyscal
Seymour (~mid-game)
Mika
Belgemine
Yunalesca
Maechen
Ginnem
Yu Yevon

Eh. You barely interact with most of these and it's still a pretty small amount relative to the whole.

Cool concept though. I don't recall any of them being obvious.

My favorite is how people like to use that scene with Tidus and Yuna laughing as proof the game has shit voice acting seemingly missing how the whole thing is supposed to be them forcing themselves to laugh despite the dire situation they're in.

I love FFX, it is fantastic.

I honestly love every single ff game. X definitely has some of the best story beats of the series and the return to a pure turn based combat system was a bold move that payed off. It's brilliant.
That laughing scene is still pretty bad. Yes, we know it's Supposed to be forced laughter. It's still bad as is the voice acting in general.
