Microsoft announces Xbox Live cross-network (PSN and other networks) play

I wouldn't be as certain. There's less benefit for them than there is for Nintendo and Microsoft.

In the meanwhile I have learned that Sony - and Nintendo - already allow cross-platform gaming, and such titles already exist, although there are not well known, as far as I can see.

So, what really happend is that MS was the last horse crossing the finishing line. Just to put certain "win win" arguments into perspective here.

While it's definitely cool to see this possibly happening, this definitely benefits Xbox more than PS4. Eliminates the need for someone buying a console that his or her friends all have to play with them online, which in most cases will be PS4 as far as sales are concerned.

Not that I'm for people being forced to buy a specific console, that person should buy whatever console her or she is more comfortable with, but I still feel that Xbox has much more to gain from this and may slightly impact PS4 sales. But you won't know until it happens.

I personally am looking forward to this as this greatly expands the multiplayer community.

here's an old post from scathezombie, presumably a developer who worked on a game that would have implemented cross-console play, who has already posted in this thread already, that is more recent of sony's "stance" on console cross play

Plus, the publisher didn't want to piss off Microsoft by having cross-platform play be a feature of only PC and PS3.

It seems that the only reason we may start to have cross-network MP games this gen are due Publishers not caring about pissing of MS, now that their console is not the dominant one.

I'm not sure how any company benefits more than the other in this case. A few games get bigger player pools. Das it.

Nintendo benefits the most, and we all know it. They have always had lackluster online presence. Having XBO and PC and PS4 gamers appearing in NX means those on the fence won't hesitate to jump on it, knowing that the number of players online will not be miniscule.

Of course, we have yet to hear from Nintendo and NX, and its online stance.

The biggest benefit would be that games that are recently announced as PS4/PC exclusive with crossplay will probably get XBO release as well.

One game that comes to mind is Paragon.
How do you figure? If a game is PS4/PC exclusive it's staying exclusive. This policy is only changing the fact that XB1 users couldn't crossplay.

Edit: Warthunder is the only game I can think of that stayed exclusive because of XB1'S anti crossplay policy.

You honestly think MS is changing this long term policy for purely altruistic reasons, because they love us and want us to be happy?

Fine, good for you. But this isn't "a great idea to evolve console gaming", it's just coming round to what everyone else has been doing for years.

So I ask myself, what changed? And until we get the details of their "open invitation" I'm going to assume that there is strategic advantage for MS in what they are doing, and so Sony would be smart to check it out properly before jumping in feet first.

Do honestly think MS is the Big Bad Wolf that always does stuff for their own evil plan fulfillment reasons? Of course it is a business, but it is not 100% about that. The actual product and people benefiting from it are part of that business decision.

So yeah. I truly hope you have the exact same attitude for anyone making an announcement like this because most of the time it sounds like if it's MS doing it then these type of reaction will come out no matter how good for all of us this is...hence you fine print jab because of course SOny can do no wrong and if they say it is ok then it will be accepted, but if Seny refuses then Ms did something wrong....FFS

For games that will allow cross platform play, you'll probably have to create a new username. Think FFXIV or SFV.

Most likely it'll just display both names, and knowing server side that one user is in a different system. Think Rocket League.

How do you figure? If a game is PS4/PC exclusive it's staying exclusive. This policy is only changing the fact that XB1 users couldn't crossplay.

I'm guessing, purely. I don't think any game is forever exclusive unless the publisher is first party. From developer perspective, it doesn't make sense to split the userbase for games that they want crossplatform play. Paragon seems like one of the games where it'll benefit Epic to have one unified fanbase/system. Microsoft not allowing crossplay could be one reason why it's not releasing in their console.

It's good pr but means nothing unless Sony or Nintendo agree. Then with PC users in the mix there is also the concern of people using things like cheat engine.

I love how they say "for it to work, sony needs to let it happen..."

like... sony hasnt already said this about XBL? lol.

its great though if it means i dont have to buy another PS4 and XB1 for my wife if we can just cross play with the 2 we have.

Yea....forget this being a benefit to XBO...this could be a huge benefit to Nintendo. Big time.

Not quite sure how that makes sense, or I just don't get what you're trying to say.

I wouldn't see how this would affect PS4 sales, exclusives are still exclusive, and best performance will still be on PC/PS4. If anything it would affect Xbox's sales, as people with a PS4 and PC can enjoy exclusives for both consoles going forward, and play with those communities online.

This is the best post of all time. OF ALL TIME.

Soon come the utopia!

It's good pr but means nothing unless Sony or Nintendo agree. Then with PC users in the mix there is also the concern of people using things like cheat engine.

PC online games are fine, no need to worry about any rampart cheating. Even if it does become a problem you can still choose not to play with PC players.

Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players.

Nintendo benefits the most, and we all know it. They have always had lackluster online presence. Having XBO and PC and PS4 gamers appearing in NX means those on the fence won't hesitate to jump on it, knowing that the number of players online will not be miniscule.

I can't see a lot of people jumping on the NX instead of sticking with what they and their friends have tbh

It's nice to see that they've finally opened up to this. Sadly I doubt we will see many games have XBL and PSN cross. Rocket League seems like something Sony would allow, but everything else just seems like it would be up in the air.

While I am not completely disagreeing, how does this benefit MSFT unless there was a financial catch?

Because people are going to PSN because it's the only way to play with their friends & if Microsoft want to move over to Xbox Live on Windows 10 as they bring console like games out for Windows 10 devices they need to eliminate that foothold.

I can't see a lot of people jumping on the NX instead of sticking with what they and their friends have tbh

No, but it could give those that left Nintendo's platform or made it an 2nd, afterthought console a reason to go back, make it main again.

I didn't realize that the definition of "huge" and "big" changed in the past few years

lol It did for today.

This is a fucking post right here.

0 chance Sony allows this

Many XBO online games are ghost towns outside of America. Why would Sony throw away this advantage?

This is where I see it getting sticky.

MSFT had dented Sony's marketshare last gen, got brazen and put up the walled garden, getting their asses handed to them this gen, now they want to bring their wall down and pretend to hand Sony a ball in which Sony has always been doing all along? Something is not adding up fully, other than MSFT wanting back some of the pie they lost.

Need more info.

And quite sad that gamers, even on here, think they innovated something, and Sony/Nintendo were behind the times in this regard.

Because people are going to PSN because it's the only way to play with their friends & if Microsoft want to move over to Xbox Live on Windows 10 as they bring console like games out for Windows 10 devices they need to eliminate that foothold.

That is actually the most understandable/logical reason I seen posted yet.

This sounds awful.

One of the reasons I detest playing MP on the PC is because I am always at a significant disadvantage - I use the 360 pad.

Now it seems like the only good reason to play consoles is dead in the water.

I hope this doesn't shoot off.

XBL vs PSN? Sure.

XBL vs PC? Fuck no.

I think this will benefit Sony more than MS in terms of console sales. A lot of people who have an Xbox only have it because it's where their friends are, if you could play with your Xbox friends on your PS4 then some people would just buy the PS4 as it's the better console in terms of hardware.

they already allow it

don't know how many times it has to be posted, Sony and Nintendo were literally never the problem here.

Do people think that the Sony supporting it once or twice in the past means that all future opportunities were automatically going to happen?

There's board room, "sure were going to allow it" and actual, on the street level, hey we're going to allow it and it'll start with Rocket League on Steam.

The next couple months are going to be interesting for sure.

There will be an option to only match with Xbox One players. I would assume down the line that'll evolve to only match with console players.

MS is the king of PR. Sadly, many of their fans are delusional and live inside a walled garden, so this is something new to them.

Sorry, like for example people buying the PS4 purely because their friends have one so they can play with them. I just seemed to go a bit overboard there with the explaining sorry for the muddled mess before.
