Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 | The 'Verse Awakens

Never stop believing, Dae.

One day we'll bask in Pyro's sunshine together, comfortably soaking our battle-worn bodies in the gold-rimmed pool of your luxurious 890 Jump, sipping Tevarin brandy.

Never stop believing.

I know Squadron 42's launch is at least 18 months away, more likely 3 years away, but I'd like to put forward my candidature for making the OT.

I promise it'll be everything you dreamed of. I'll make Star Citizen great again.
These might or might not be election promises.

I can do it too. Since I don't have any free time do something remotely related to gaming and the game will never release anyway, it makes me feel like I'm still active without having to actually do something.
jk

Whoever ends up doing it, I imagine someone already has it reserved. Just putting it out there I'd be glad to help. I did the Elite Dangerous OT.

So I am in the process of making an account for the free week thing and it's asking me if I have a referral code and it will reward me with some credits if I do... Would it actually help any of you out if I used one of your codes? If so send me one. asap lol. I want to download this but don't want to miss out on some credits if they are helpful at all.

I did not launch SC since 2.0 is it easier to get in an instance of Port ollisar with a friend now or is it always full ?

In my experience it's only mildly easier to get into Olisar with friends. They still haven't really ironed out a friends system, but they have upped the player count and it more accurately tracks (but not entirely accurate) which of your friends are playing and how full their server is on the Universe select screen.

I thought about what would go into the OT, but then I realized how little we really know about S42. I mean, we do know a fair amount, but when compared to Star Citizen, S42 is a black box.

Indeed. It would be mostly speculation, but that's bound to change in the months leading up to the release. They were talking about sharing some cool S42 stuff in the latest RtV. That vault has gotta start leaking at some point. Honestly, it's mostly official S42 art I'd be missing, if I were to make the OT right now.

There has been one really large part that has been revealed.

Apparently the game has linear missions you take, but then you also are merely stationed aboard the ship in a system... and can do "far cry esque" open world stuff in a sandbox.

Pretty sure that is a design that has been mentioned by CIG and by press who went to F42 UK.

Yeah, that's my understanding of it as well.

If they get the mixture (and quality) right, I'd say it's pretty much the ideal solution for a modern story-driven space sim.

The possibilities of it, when you consider the addition of EVA / FPS ... Help.

Flying the Sabre more and I have to say I don't like it. I thought it felt fine previously but after more seat time it just feels sterile now. There is no personality to it's flight characteristics and it feels like it nearly is on rails. Maybe it's because I've been playing a lot of DCS lately but it the Sabre feels like it lacks nuance in it's behavior.

The Glaive (I know it is currently broken) on the other hand is a lot more alive. You can feel a more of the ship's personally when flying and there is more risk in maneuvering in tight spaces.

One of the level designers interviewed in the PC gamer Weekender, mentioned that it will be a mix of driven and well paced linear missions as well as more open ended setpiece moments.

It'll be interesting to see how well CIG fares in the design of the missions. We have nothing with which to judge their abilities on that front. Hopefully they nail it, because to a certain extent this will be child's play compared to the design that'll have to go into events in SC. It's a bit apples and oranges, but there's far more variables in play in SC.

The closest we have is the training mission, which when it launched at least (when it worked!), had some nice narrative elements and feel.

Well, it's not exactly CR's first rodeo when it comes to space ship shooters, so that has a high(er) probability of coming out good. It's when you factor in the whole FPS/EVA aspects that things get complicated. That's kind of uncharted territory.

Hi guys, to gain access to all the playable stuff so far all I have to buy is one of the $45 ships and the Squadron 42 pass? Arena Commander is now included with the ship, right?

Cool, no worries!

When you mentioned future SM modes--what does SM stand for?

EDIT: Nevermind, I believe it's this.

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/14981-Star-Marine-Status-Update

Yeah it is star marine. There are elements of the FPS movement and combat in the general alpha atm (which are a core part of the experience), yet Star Marine is the long planned sub-mode of pure FPS round-based combat with ranks and dedicated multiplayer maps ala Counter Strike / Rainbow 6. When that is coming out? No idea.

I would hazard ....probably around the time "The Next Great Star Marine" happens..

I want to upgrade my Aurora MR to an Aurora LN, per this guide's suggestion of the LN being the best value (it's a $10 upgrade).

Is upgrading as simple as going through the process in the upgrade menu and then having your ship turn into the upgraded one in-game?

Basically, yes. But by going through the upgrade menu you will get an upgrade item you buy that will be in your hangar section on the website which you have to apply first (through the hangar section on the website) for it to take effect ingame.

Hopefully it's something I don't want lol. Decided to bite the bullet with a Vive, so ship funds are squashed.

Nice, excited to hear how the Vive works!

I am curious if it will be the new pirate interceptor (Buccaneer) or the two person mining ship. Figured they would hold off on the Polaris until closer to Nov/Dec time frame.

There should be plenty of commentary on the Vive long before I get mine as I'm not scheduled to ship till May. At least that's what it used to say. Shipment month is blank now.

I was in no hurry to preorder and mulled over for quite some time on whether I wanted to get into this round of VR - and which headset to get if I did. There was no way I was getting both. In the end I decided to jump in the Vive camp because the room scale experiences interest me more than the sitting ones, and unlike the Rift I don't have to worry about USB 3 with my current computer. That and from a tech perspective I think the lighthouse based Vive is much more elegant than the camera based Rift. Far easier to place too. Being dumb boxes I can mount them anywhere with no regards to routing a cable back to the PC. The camera on the Rift would be much pickier on location and having two for room scale would make it a messy proposition.

Anyhow, I hope the concept sale is the Buccaneer. The Drake lineup is kind of lacking on the smaller end of things. A non multi-crew ship that has a combat abilities is just the sort of thing they need. As a bonus, I have no interest at all in that one so I wont feel any regret in ignoring it!

Wait, what's this. ?
It's been announced for awhile.
Drake Dragonfly: You don’t so much as climb into the Dragonfly as you do put it on around you. In short, it’s the closest thing to strapping an engine and a weapons mount to your spacesuit… or, as the advertising campaign claims, it’s the closest thing to riding the vacuum yourself. Occupying somewhere in the pantheon between a snub fighter and an Aurora, the Dragonfly is a speedy, maneuverable ultralight designed to be cheaply constructed in large numbers and to be readily customized by hobbyists. Dragonfly’s have become the favorite of a particular brand of enthusiast that frequently gather together to share their modifications, off-track race… and other less legitimate “hobbies.”

If it is this, it'll be another good LTI fodder ship as it should be on the cheap side.

As I prep for my VR arrival, it occured to me that we're going to need like...2018 GPUs to run this game in the manner we expect in VR aren't we.

So just about in time for the VR support to be added to the game. ;)

Seriously though, it's going to take a hefty rig to get SC to consistent 90+fps. Not just the GPU either; the CPU demand will be quite high.

This got me to thinking about the whole SC animations in VR bit and how the FPS aspects are at odds with best practices for VR. We've had this conversation a number of times now, but an idea just popped in my head that was inspired by the recent Steam VR news. What if when leaving the cockpit chair you're warped out of first person VR perspective to where you're watching a virtual screen of the game? Basically returning to monitor play without having to rip off the headset. This way you have the immersion of piloting the ship in full VR but can walk around / shoot / etc without the possibility of motion sickness.

That is pretty clever. I approve of this message.

My friend gave me his account today, said he doesn't have time to play it. Never played before but it looks gorgeous. Isn't this game getting a VR update eventually?
Edit: 2 posts above me is my answer. I'm dumb.

And people laughed. Little did they know ...
Brilliant idea.

I don't think the virtual cinema switch would be well received. They could just switch to a 3rd person view for the most troublesome animations.

The whole of FPS combat is going to be troublesome with VR, and you can't do that in 3rd person with any real effectiveness due to the limits the game imposes on the HUD.

Personally what I was laughing at was the idea of streaming Xb1 video instead of projecting the output of a game running on your VR capable PC.

You can keep the full immersion mode as an option for those people unaffected by it. Full time 3rd person isn't going to work.

Sure, you can keep it an option. Not like a tick box takes any effort to implement.

That said, I'm not sure how many people would really like it. The more comments I read from devs making VR games, the more I realize SC's FPS stuff is pretty much the antithesis of good VR. Movement via analog sticks. Jumping / crouching / going prone via buttons. Occluded view from helmets. Headbob and ragdoll physics being applied to the body. Hands that aren't your own showing up on the screen. Even if it doesn't make you sick, the combination of all of the above will kill any feeling of presence. If you're going to feel like a disconnected entity, what's the point?

Edit: Thinking further about the "virtual cinema" mode, it could optionally emulate what TrackIR does in the virtual environment for a halfway point between full immersion and static cinema.

Have you always been able to spawn any ship in Port Olisar or is that only available during the Free Fly week?

As per the transmission:
For the next week, we’ve enabled Free Fly access to all accounts… FOR EVERY CURRENTLY FLYABLE SHIP IN THE GAME OO-AH-AH-AH-AH!
Once it ends you'll be restricted to what you own - or what they're giving you as a loaner.
