HOLY SHIT! Christian Whitehead's Sonic The Hedgehog Is On The Big Screen Via tvOS!!!!

This has been playable on Amazon Fire TV for ages. With an XBOX 360 controller, and 1080p even. So are Sonic 2 and Sonic CD. I guess this is cool if you're more into Apple's ecosystem though.

tvOS is a unix-based OS which is a blood relative to iOS which itself stated off as a fork of OS X. It is what runs the Apple TV 4th gen, and it is relatively easy to recompile iOS apps to tvOS apps.

Ohh okay. Apple stuff. But wasn't it already available on iOS? What's the big deal? Can't you just hook up your iPhone or iPad to your TV and play with a wireless controller via Bluetooth? This just seems like a slightly easier way to do that.

Though mobile players and cables have been an option, every android stick version is just the regular android game on a tom and sadly on iOS, there is no way to get the game on a tv without either lag or compression artifacts. This is the first release of this game made specifically for a monitor or tv.

In other words, it' been kinda not as easy as it should have been to play this optimally on a tv in the first place, so that is why this release is significant in that regard.

you're over selling this. It's the exact same interface that shows up if you hook up an iphone to a tv and use a mfi controller. The interface to these games already don't show mobile references if they detect you're using a controller. When you play the android version on a nexus or shield, you don't get mobile references.
Not really. It's designed for tvOS which allows it to be played on an Apple TV with App Store natively. It's a nice option.

Mm no, tvOS is not the same thing as iOS. There are differences in the UI and developer guidelines (such as overscan mitigation) to specifically account for TV viewing via the Apple TV.

Now this game might be 95% the same as the iOS version, but it won't be the same as plugging in your iOS device to a TV.

Exactly! The overscan mitigation (5 percent safe area rule) is a big one when it comes to the differences between iOS and HDMI cable vs tvOS releases.

The differences between tvOS and iOS are about as dramatic as the differences between AndroidTV and Android - which is to say they are trivial at best. This is the iOS game, running on your TV. It's not any different.

Grab your Hori Commander people, the game we've been wanting to play off of mobile is FINALLY ON THE BIG SCREEN!

Downloading now. Remember, if you have the iOS version, you get the tvOS version free! Will record footage, here's hoping 2 is next!

So now iOS users can finally experience what Android users have had for years?

Congrats on finally making it to the party. ;)

finally i can play sonic the hedgehog on my television
this is something that was not possible before

But this is the new, wide screen version with a built from the ground up engine

this is like only the third time it's been possible to play that on a TV!

This is just brutal.

I have a whole wack of Sonic 1 releases including this on Android but I'd still rather just play it on Genesis. 4:3 is totally fine and it just really feels right to play with that oversized 3 button Genesis controller.

...SEGA acknowledged the ports post-Nintendo exclusivity deal. Steam version soon, maybe? I hope so, anyways. It'd be absurd for them not to. I'd hope for a Sonic 3 remake as well, but maybe that's asking for too much.

HUELEN sure gets overexcited about a lot of things. I remember when he/she said Horizon Chase was the best game ever made.
I mean c'mon, it's a decent enough racer, but it's not the second coming of Christ.

This is great news! .......But that still doesn't apply to the PS4/X1/Wii U/PC gamers :l.

Still, nice hearing this news and hope people are happy over this :). Thank you for sharing this with us all OP! Hopeful this leads to PS4/X1/Wii U/PC ports coming this year to celebrate the anniversary.

Can someone fill me in on what this is about?
Michael Jackson worked on Sonic 3's OST but was uncredited.

A Sonic 3K remake would require relicensing the rights of those iconic Sonic 3 songs.

The songs remain intact in emulated rereleases, but a remake would most likely require another license since it is technically new software legally.

The emulated versions probably have grandfathered rights.

This is all speculation since the contract is confidential.

With Sony buying Michael Jackson's estate, is there a greater possibility of them letting Sega use the original music for any ports and remasters of S3&K? Sony and Sega are on good terms, at least video games-wise.

Also, what is a tvOS? Never heard of it before this thread. I'm still waiting for a console remaster of Sonic 1 & 2.

I don't think so. There seems to be more people than just MJ involved in this mess (remember than his sound engineers composed for the game too, see Ice Cap).

Presumably in honour of this thread, the Sonic twitter has chosen to dedicate its St. Patrick's Day tribute to HUELEN:

I played this on a tv in 1991. I cannot believe technology has advanced so much that i can now play it on my tv.

If they were working for MJ, the rights could still be solely his.

Just because you contribute to a project doesn't mean you own the rights. They could've been hired hands.

I'm not refuting the possibility, but creative input and ownership rights are two different things.

Ok all this Sonic 3 on mobile talk - if it came down to it, could we really not just get a version that replaced the Jackson tracks? Just sub in music from the PC version or 3D Blast or something. It would hardly be ideal but I can't imagine Sega is holding the game up for any other reason. I'd take it over nothing.

To be honest, I've been playing these ports on my PC using Genymotion and a generic Android hardware profile. I'm not actually pirating the games, as I am downloading the versions that I purchased through the Google Play store.
