Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

As long as the same game can be played on a regular ps4 in1080p I don't really care.
It's not that I'm upgrading to a 4k television set anytime soon.

Exclusives may be the last big difference between consoles and the pc market.
As long as consoles continue to have exclusive games, people will have the incentive to buy them.

What the hell is wrong with you??? lol, stop panicking

If this is true, the minimum requirements for each game will still be the current Ps4 specs
I bought and play a ps4 because I wanted my games to look and play as best as they could in the console space. For example, when red dead 3 comes out, I don't want to play it at 1080p/30fps with drops when I could be playing it at 60fps. Idk, the fact that I'll know people playing a "ps4.5" will be getting a better experience than me rubs me the wrong way. Because the whole idea of a console was you would just buy the box and be done for 6/7years. But I guess that's not true anymore

Bullshit. This gen seems like it hasn´t even kicked off yet, with that year and a half filled with HD versions of old games. Way to fuck with early adopters.

Zero chance that this runs AAA games at 4k unless it costs over $1000. I'd imagine both consoles will be looking to get performance around GTX 970 level.

Geez, some people need to calm down.

Iterative hardware is going on in every other part of the tech industry. Why should game consoles be any different?

Because it's the appeal of consoles for a lot of people.

If consoles go the PC route you may aswell get a PC where you switch the GPU (because CPU last A LOT nowadays) for the same or less price than the PS4 revision and get A LOT more of graphical power.

Get used to it, because its going to be the new normal.

Glad it is too, maybe there won't be 6-8 year cycles, I think updated hardware every 4 years or so is good. PS4 will be 3 years old soon and this alleged upgrade probably won't be out until late this year at the absolute earliest but I'm banking on 2017, which will put it close to the 4 year mark. I don't think that's unreasonable and people have the choice as to what they spend their money on if they don't feel like it's worth it.

Not sure why everything is drama especially when we have so few details.

Am I the only one who thinks 4k is shit?
I think games look much better when you use all the hardware power to make the graphics as fancy as possible in 1080p, instead of putting out 4k but having to tone down the fanciness in order to achieve it.

I also think its a dumb move by Sony to split their hardware base. There is really no need for Sony to do that.

If this is true, Hubris Sony is back. Hubris for expecting console gamers will be happy to buy an iterative console a year or two after buying a PS4.

If this comes out next year, it will be 4 years since the console release. Very reasonable IMO, and far better than 10-year cycles

The question genuinely becomes why would you purchase a console every few years as opposed to purchasing a gaming PC that'll arguably last a good while longer.

It's an all in one package and much more user friendly to set up for consumers.

It's also cheaper.

For PC, you still either need to get it prebuilt, buy extra controllers and such. Or you can go the parts route, which let's face it, it is not attractive to most gamers.

Nah, just nah if this is true. I'm not gonna pay another few hundred bucks so soon just so I am able to play a not lesser version of a game . This generation is still so young. Hope this is false

What's the point? It's selling like crazy. A more powerful ps4 would provide what exactly for Sony? People buy consoles because they are affordable.

Consoles aren't smartphones. While smartphones are now an essential tool consoles are ultimately frivolous toys aimed at a niche. Crap like this will destroy that niche.

Sorry, but a smartphone is not essential. Plenty of people out there are perfectly fine with a cheap flip phone.

Although I don't have a great feel for these sorts of things, I feel like 4k would have to be significantly stronger than a current PS4, what would make that not a PS5 then? How do you sell a console that can support 4k at even 30 fps for ~400 dollars (legitimate question, not being coy)?

You need a GPU that's in the enthusiast price range (~$400-$650, R9 Nano, Fury X, 980ti...) for a contemporary 4k, 30fps experience.

This sounds all a bit overambitious for a console.

Sony's bout to piss off holiday PS4 buyers from at least 2 years ago.

Shit, they're pissing me off because now I don't even know if it's worth buying a PS4 or just wait for this supposed revamp?

Either way they friggin ported every single game I own on PS3 to PS4

The most exciting thing about this isn't 4k games or better VR, it's that it means we might get a new OS and therefore folders. I'd pay $400 for a new PS4 with folders. God knows we're never getting them on the original.

Are people seriously thinking a PS4.5 could do 4K gaming?
I have a 980ti and most AAA-games wont run in 4K at a good framerate.

And what's the point of having 4K resolution if most people are going to watch it in 1080p, I would take 1080p and stable 60fps over a higher resolution. I would by a PS4.5 that enforces a 1080p/60fps standard for games.

This is what I was thinking. My 970 already has problems with some games at 1080p and some PS4 games like JC3 already can't hit a steady 30FPS. I think it's more for the checklist PR than anything else.

I don't think this is a bad move. It will get their hardcore fans to shell even more money on their products while the casual consumers will be fine with the basic model as long as all games are supported.

So it's "Hubris Sony" for a rumor about a move that would be following after the example of what Microsoft and Nintendo have already planned/done?

Gotcha.

If it was just a PS4 that was capable of running the exact same games but at 4K instead, I could see that happening tbh. No difference in assets etc, just the exact same games, running at 4K or 1080p depending on the hardware... sure I guess?

If you don't realize that both Xbox and Playstation are no longer pieces of hardware, but instead platforms, you haven't been paying attention.

This is a good move if true, and I'm very excited to hear more about it.

now they can port them all again to 4k and charge you full price for the definitive experience!

So if you can sell your current PS4 and buy the upgraded one it will probably be cheaper than the launch price. I hope retailers like Gamestop and BestBuy offer great trade in deals for individuals that are short on cash and can't afford to buy the newest version before trading in their old console.

I wonder how the upgrade would work when it is a APU? Surely it would be daft to upgrade the GPU part to say 970 levels and leave the RAM and CPU the same?

At that point it is a new console, though.

Yeah this will certainly split the userbase and that's not a good thing. I would just wait for the PS5 or whatever at that point..

If this is where console gaming is headed, there won't be any reason to not get a PC instead.

Apart from exclusives. Other than that, I agree completely.

If this is the road they go down then why would people buy their console if they'll just release a better version later on? This could hurt console sales in the long run, and this is coming from a guy who has never owned a gaming PC.

YES YES YES! Thank god it is not a MS only dividing issue anymore.

It is no longer about console wars, but the future of how consoles will be handled.

Personally I agree since one of the main complaints for most this gen has been performance and this is in part with the outdated hardware and how stupid slow the console game industry is evolving vs others. So upgrades for the hardware every 2/3 years similar to how older console gens lasted would be great for all. That way I feel consoles could get closer to PC in terms of performance and gaming in general benefits from this. It feels like the disconnect we used to have with console.arcade quality that eventually went away.

Now this is what I feel and I am happy that Sony is discussing this as well as MS. What I fear is the apathy and anger of gamers. I feel hey would rage at incremental upgrades, they wil rage and still complain about bad performance if that makes any sense. I've always been of the opinion that many gamers are just cheap. They love gaming but do not want to support it so they complain about high prices and just don't support. It is the only thing that make me fears this development.

Normal consumer though...they are used to this with phones so I do not see this as a bad thing for them.

I really like the ideas that are coming out this year for console gaming. Incremental upgrades, full cross-play, more yearly events to announce new stuff/tech/upgrades not only games for E3 or new console unveiling. I am liking to where we are headed, but please please please let the community follow along and evolve with it. Don't crap on this,, it is good for all.
