Is Kotaku in danger of shutting down?

No he's not. He's even admitted hating Kotaku for some reason

Not sure why anybody would want them to close down. Just avoid their articles. Is that not hard for people?

That was after my post. There are quite a few posts expressing similar sentiments, with near identical responses of "but think of the jobs!"

I apologize for inadvertently picking the only one who actually was thinking about kotaku.

No seriously I'm interested in why

There must be some fallout from the Crecente years. Since Totilo took over and Schreier has done his thing posting articles on Kotaku along with posting on GAF, they've turned me around.

I would absolutely hate to see them go away.

To be fair, there's some people who were disappointed with how the Kotaku staff handled the Conde Nast scandal.

To go further, there was an editorial revolt when they took that article down.

Just thought I'd post Klepeks's response to the whole Conde Nast thing, if this is why people don't like Kotaku. Might make people see it differently. http://patrickklepek.tumblr.com/post/124358392419/the-gawker-staff-wrote-a-today-objecting-to-the

I’m torn on the post being taken down. If Gawker made a mistake, their shit should stink publicly and openly. Deleting it is a symbolic gesture that does nothing to take back what happened–the genie is out of the bottle, so to speak.

It shouldn’t be management’s call whether or not a post comes down, that should be determined by the editorial staff. That said, issuing a statement like this right now makes it look like the staff is defending the post being written.

As I hope has been made clear all day today, that is not my feeling–at all.

The post was a mistake. It will always be a mistake. It genuinely hurt people’s lives, and Gawker has to live with that. As a reporter for a sister site of Gawker, in a way, I have to live with that, too. Believe me, it brings me great distress.

I do not blame anyone for looking at the staff statement and going “is this the hill you want to die on?,” however.

The reason people hate Patrick Klepek is as simple as the fact people find him annoying.

He never really fit in with the Giant Bomb team. He had his views on video games and alot of people disagreed with him. He's also one of those guys who can get extremely in your face and annoying in his views.

Austin Walker on the other hand has alot of the same views but thinks before he speaks and is very opened mined. Hes also just a nicer guy and meshes better with the Giant Bomb crew.

Klepek made a good fit in Kotaku he could post his rare scoops and post his dumb articles also. http://kotaku.com/emily-who-is-the-worst-deserves-to-die-in-until-dawn-1728584963

I'm sure Klepek and some of the other talent will land on their feet and they will continue to post more articles good and shit.

TL:DR Klepek is annoying and in your face. Walker is intelligent and knows how to write an article.

The Main Reason Klepek is hated though is because during the Zoe Quinn stuff he strongly sided with her.

Walton is pissed at Klepek because he had contacted her in his recent article about the never-ending war on video game culture, and though their email correspondence, Walton definitively stated that she did not want to be a part of the story. Klepek ignored her and used her quotes in the article, and when Walton called him out on Twitter, Klepek said something to the effect of "NOPE ON RECORD THANX." Don't think it got much traction here when it first happened, probably because Scoops.

I've followed her for a year or so on Twitter, and she does incredible work for the Wayne Foundation, so I was quite disappointed to see her name get dragged into this horseshit.

Austin also has a goofy laugh. I love em.

Gawker definitely are reaping what they sowed here, but it's going to hurt plenty more people than just those responsible if they lose on appeal. As for the size of the settlement, it's absurd that Hogan is basically being compensated by the legal system for having been outed as a racist.

End of an era. I don't have much doubt that the better journalists on the site will land on their feet elsewhere. But whether that elsewhere is (or was) financially as stable as Gawker media, yeah.

I hate to be joking here but does this include pissing off a judge.
Again I hope everyone that wasnt involved in the shady side of gawker can get a job if their site gets sold/closed.

I found Patrick annoying on video as well. But bothering to actively hate on him... Is just weird. Always assumed those who did tweet and comment nasty shit on what he did, was some of those lonely people that felt he somehow disrupted the weird friendship they felt they had with GB staff.

That is some shitty journalism if it's the case. Declining to comment and then being quoted as saying something is false information.

This is possibly the most inaccurate post I've ever seen on GAF. Also, Walker is not nearly as talented a writer as Klepek.

Maybe their jobs weren't worth shit if they were in service of an organisation like Gawker. Would you rather Gawker go unpunished just so people can maintain their sources of income?

..You know people are going to say yes. The almighty "jobs!" card is used to justify industries that cause great harm to the planet, after all.

I enjoy going to Kotaku every day even if a lot of it is dumb and silly (though I like dumb and silly too). I hope Press Sneak Fuck lands on his feet okay.

Man, you nailed it. I'm a huge fan of GB and have met Jeff, Vinny and Patrick at the few PAXes I've been to, but the people who act like they have some sort of background knowlege about GB or act like they're friends with the staff are just weird.

This would make sense if people didn't also hate on Austin under the same auspices and to the same degree. Any mutual exclusion on perception between the two of them is all in your head.

This reminds me of the Ubisoft blacklisting, and it's that kind of mentality that would lead to the law deciding against you. Regarding his tweet that is.

Funny. Austin Walker and Patrick Klepek are and were my favorite members of the GB crew to the point where I cancelled my GB sub after Klepek left and only just resubbed after Austin joined.

I'm not going to pit them against each other. They're both great writers and neither are or were annoying.

That was when Kotaku got blacklisted by Ubisoft, right? Kotaku has been trying to become more independent from publishers, taking their own planes, arranging their own hotel rooms, and not allowing game companies to pay for their fees in general.

Most other sites just accept all this and barely independent from publishers.

Lets hope IMPO That sites absolute garbage

Edit

Before anyone says im heartless i do hope they all find other enployment if they do close down

GB fans hate anyone that comes off "booky" to them. Austin's gotten the same amount of shit and worse, in threads on here even.

One can agree with the justice that has been doled out without specifically celebrating the collateral damage.

Wow @ the replies of Patrick's tweet! Do people actively check in on Twitter accounts of people they hate to post shit? Where do people find the time to be so hateful? I just don't get it.

Even though I never liked Kotaku that much that doesn't mean you shouldn't wish bad luck on the people who work there and weren't even involved in the incident. Its never good for anyone to be unemployed :/

I'm sure people hate on Austin too but the guy is right. He's grown on me but Klepek just kind of has an abrasive personality. I think he's better off as a writer than working at a personality driven website like GB.

See: the cringefest Nolan North interview.

This is possibly the most inaccurate post I've ever seen on GAF. Also, Walker is not nearly as talented a writer as Klepek.

I think Walker is a better longform writer, but Klepek is a great investigator. He earned the name Scoops.

That said, this is so far off topic it may as well be the Leaving Las Vegas series of posts in this thread.

I'm sure people hate on Austin too but the guy is right. Klepek just kind of has an abrasive personality.

That was bad, but I think that's one of the reasons he left GBomg; he needed to do things out of his comfort zone. When it comes to actually investigating and getting to the bottom of things, then articulating his findings, he's one of the best in the business.

This is amazing news. Not necessarily Kotaku shutting down and people losing their jobs (that part really sucks and hope those people will be ok.)

But Gawker is smarmy as fuck so it's nice to see them get burned after all their bullshit.

This will be a fascinating appellate process, I forgot that Gawker won against Hogan in Federal Court and he managed to add them to his Florida case originally against the DJ. I'm curious how Hogan was able to overcome this matter already being decided (res judicata).

Fascinating.

They will get sold, hopefully its to a decent group and not another game trailers situation. It never good to loose competition.

I remember in the early days of gawker someone from another Gawker site 'jokingly' posted a goatse picture on kotaku.... They took it down and issued an apology, but it should give you an idea of the culture there.

That is some shitty journalism if it's the case. Declining to comment and then being quoted as saying something is false information.

It's he said she said though. He posted an article which talked about how Walton was involved in the social media campaign against a Nintendo employee, in which he used some email correspondence from her. (Here's the article http://kotaku.com/the-ugly-new-front-in-the-neverending-video-game-cultur-1762942381) She tweeted afterwards saying she hadn't agreed for him to use the quotes he did, and then he said they were totally on the record. There's no way of knowing who is telling the truth, but in this case I would side with the journalist rather then the person who was negatively portrayed in the article based on public shit she's done, not just on her quote. And just for the record, the guy you replied to has like 4 of his last comments shitting on Klepek/Kotaku, sometimes with blatant misinformation.

I found Patrick annoying on video as well. But bothering to actively hate on him... Is just weird. Always assumed those who did tweet and comment nasty shit on what he did, was some of those lonely people that felt he somehow disrupted the weird friendship they felt they had with GB staff.

I'll admit to not like his Media Personality but actively hating on someone on twitter is strange. I just wanted to point out why some people don't like him and why comparing him to Austin isn't right.

This is possibly the most inaccurate post I've ever seen on GAF. Also, Walker is not nearly as talented a writer as Klepek.

You can like Klepek, but just because Klepeks articles get more attention doesn't mean he is a better writer.

edit. Austin does get some hate but he will never get as much hate as Patrick Klepek

I actually like the Gawker Media sites besides the actual Gawker site which is slime.

Lifehacker's great. Kotaku does nice news reporting.

I like the writing from pretty much everyone at Kotaku except Fahey... hope they stick around. If not, I'm sure most of them will find work pretty soon.

Certain people in Gawker management seem like reprehensible individuals. For the gross shit they've said and done, and for said and done gross shit now potentially screwing up the lives of the people they employ(ed).

Gawker can start decomposing for all I care, but hopefully sites like Kotaku either get sold to a moderately decent company, or good people like Patrick Klepek get snapped up. Godspeed to them all.

Serious question, but will someone buy up another company that just lost a $115M lawsuit? I just watched The Big Short so my understanding of smart economics is all fucked up right now.

GB fans hate anyone that comes off "booky" to them. Austin's gotten the same amount of shit and worse, in threads on here even.

Fuck. Seriously? This makes me so sad to read. GB are blessed to have Walker, he's such a talented writer and intellectual.

Is it a majority of GB fans or a sizable group that doesn't like him? :(

Just sucks that the decisions of a few could hurt many employees, like those at Kotaku, who would never endorse the sleazy shit their parent company engaged in.

For what it's worth, Jason, I've enjoyed reading your work and feel you are a great asset to video game journalism.
