Adult Swim & Production IG Partnering for FLCL seasons 2 & 3

Legitimately one of the worst ideas I've ever heard.

FLCL was an incredibly personal, meaningful and artistically sound work that existed in isolation.

Creating a sequel.(two sequels!) by an entirely new team just completely misses the boat. The story is done. It resolved perfectly. So creating some sequels just to cash in is a disastrous idea.

And I have no faith that whatever hack team Production IG comes up with for this will have even an ounce of the creativity that Tsurumaki and the staff behind FLCL did.

Want to celebrate FLCL? Create something new and original, something that has personal meaning to you. Don't just dress yourself up in the skin of an old property.

Really iffy about this. For one thing, a big part of the appeal was in the animation, and there's no way it's going to look the same. Secondly, the original ended at a good place, but there is the counterargument that one could just ignore this if it turns out badly. Thirdly, the music! There's definitely a large chance they won't be able to match the old soundtrack. I'm also worried that the craziness will be toned down and it will be too slow, like most made-for-Westerners anime.

I am completely torn. It's perfect, really perfect as-is. But...more could probably still be pretty good, right?

And more from the Pillows...

What the fuck?!!! Worried, but still Adult Swim is so awesome. Can they fund a better Berserk adaptation too >_>

Really hope they get the old dub crew back together for this. The FLCL dub is one of the all time greats.

"Relationship?! How do you meeeeaaaaan?!"

New season of FLCL

Adult Swim, it's time. You know what must be done.

I mean Adult Swim already paid to make Season 2. Considering it didn't do gangbusters, I assume they don't want to pay for a 3rd season.

For as much as I'd ADORE a third season of Big O (and a nice bluray set of the first two) how 'bout some more IGPX? Just throwing that out there. Show was fun, Haley Joel's available.

EDIT: Whoa, just realized the Pillows implications. Wonder if they'd do new music for this...

Nothing has ever topped the original show for me. These episodes probably won't, either.

But if we get some new Sadamoto artwork out of this, it's a net plus.

I think part of the appeal is that no, you can't really equate FLCL to anything else.

I'm not sure if that's a sincere question or if it's a joke since FLCL cannot be equated to anything else.

FLCL is, like, 50 different shows, movies, music and mangas got merged together. It's insane but in all the right ways.

Oh I didn't mean in terms of the content itself, I meant in terms of how crazy this is.

Like, Sony producing the next Zelda game or something.

Not in terms of tone but this is sorta like Twin Peaks season 3, but probably without David Lynch and if Twin Peaks didn't shit the bed, dying a slow unworthy death as season 2.

You're better off just watching FLCL to understand. It's only six, ~24min episodes and I think Funimation streams it on their site.

If I had to compare it to something, it'd be a new Metal Gear game with no involvement from Kojima. So maybe it will turn out alright, but it definitely won't have the same personal touch.

I hear you, but other than the studio name do we know anything of the creative staff? How do we know Enokido and/or Tsurumaki aren't involved in some way?

Crap, now that I've read the posts here, if its not made by the same team, then why even bother? Also it is true that the original wrapped it up nicely...

Crap, now I'm worried.

As someone who bought every FLCL DVD and Blu-ray that came out and lists it as #1 on my Anime of All Time list

GOD NO WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS

Oh, that.

Well, I wouldn't say it's anything like that. It's just an anime that a lot of people would consider their favorite so it's pretty cool that after 15 years more episodes are being made. I guess the fact that Adult Swim are the ones who are financing it adds a bit more craziness to the whole thing.

So this is what all those FLCL sequel rumors were about.

I'm excited because FLCL was amazing but I'm also wary for the same reason.

It might be a good idea to tap Trigger to animate some of this for that post-Gainax style.

A) Why is the animation a concern? Even if they get none of the original team back, there aren't a shortage of good animators in Japan. Just give them enough money and, especially, time and they will do good work. There's almost no way this doesn't end up looking like sex on screen.

B) As far as I know, The Pillows is still an active band. Even if they aren't/can't record live/new music, its not like they don't have a deep backlog to pull from. Granted, we have to actually hear they are back before we can say anything but its not like they can't reasonably match the music

C)The last point is potentially a concern but I feel they would have to strongly misunderstand what people liked about the original. Its more likely in my opinion that they turn up the crazy TOO HIGH and the show becomes a mess/acid trip/etc.

For those of us who have no idea what this is, can you equate it to something else?

There's not much else to compare it to. It's a world in which the inhabitants kind of brush off ridiculous things happening around them (including the apocalypse). When I was introduced to it the guy described it as 'six 25 minute music videos for The Pillows.' It's a story about a boy growing up. Everything else is a madcap extension of his awkward transition to adolescence and the anomie that comes from having zero reliable adult role models.

I hear you, but other than the studio name do we know anything of the creative staff? How do we know Enokido and/or Tsurumaki aren't involved in some way?

Well, I assume Tsurumaki will be too busy with Evangelion to work on this. Enokido could work on it, I suppose, but there's no real indication of that. (And I dont have much faith in 2016 Enokido to write a quality script given most of his recent output)

I just wouldn't go into it thinking it'll be like FLCL. Now whether it actually shits on the original remains to be seen. If it gets an American director and writer, then I'm out.

Now I'm curious at how much money Adult Swim threw at Production I.G. to help make this happen. That would be telling on how good it will look. As for story? There is like one way they could make this a worthwhile follow-up and a million ways to fuck it to hell and back. God I hope this doesn't turn into a clusterfuck by the end.

It would be awesome if it did end up being nearly as good as the original, but that seems like an impossibility at this point.

idk how I feel about this. I love FLCL, one of the best anime I ever seen. I loooooove Ninamori. However, I accepted that the series shouldn't go any further. I wouldn't want any filler on this show.

So kind of indifferent for the moment but excited.

If The Pillows won't do it then they should force Beck to learn Japanese. Since I was a kid I've always felt Beck's music would fit perfectly with FLCL.

They've recorded around 11-12 albums since Runner's High, plenty of material to work with (not even including b-sides or side projects, Sawao stays busy)

FLCL is one my favorite things in the universe, but....I don't know that I want more. Can it be as good as the original or are we just chasing the dragon?

Man I don't know how to feel.

I can't think of anything that needs a sequel less than FLCL. I can't imagine what it could do that wouldn't lessen the impact of the original.

FLCL is a coming of age story in a small city with an amazing soundtrack and aliens. It had really cool animation and was just really crazy at the time.

Not sure why people have to treat it like some impenetrable monolith.
