Entering the theater now. Here we go...

Why does March do worse than May to July at the box office? March has holidays too. School isn't even out yet in May either.

Not to mention many school districts give students off the week before Easter. There are others that do the Thursday and Friday before and the Monday after, which is what it was like for me growing up. I think sometime in the past decade my county changed it to the first option I mentioned.

I really feel sorry for Affleck. His whole motivation for doing this thing was that Daredevil sucked.

Well luckily apparently he's good in the role and this is his toll on the road to making his own Batman film and I'm positive Affleck can rock that shit. Excited to see what he does with it.

I'd say a teeny-tiny bit of his motivation was the undoubtedly huge check WB wrote him. Credit to the guy, he put in the work and did a wonderful job. In JL he may be Daniel Craig in Spectre levels of tired; I imagine this is all demoralizing. If he gets a chance to do a solo Batman film, with control on the problem, it can be something special.

Remember just a few days ago when people were saying that they wished Warner would've lifted the embargo because the early response was so positive?

Summer box office isn't like summer box office, either. You're saying this less than a month after an R-Rated Deadpool movie made 130mil in its opening weekend, less than a few months after a new Star Wars movie made 250 mil in its opening weekend in December, less than a year after both Avengers 2 just barely missed 200mil in its opening weekend, and Jurassic World just cleared it.

The idea that anyone at WB is going to be pleased with a Batman v Superman that only makes about 15mil more than Man of Steel's opening weekend is a silly one. They're gonna be fuckin upset.

We live in a world where a late December release made $235mil.

They're gonna make some pretty solid money.

I feel bad for Affleck too because I like him as a person, actor, and director. But let's not pretend he isn't an adult capable of making his own choices and living with consequences.

He signed on to this movie for a good chunk of money and must have known more or less where this thing was headed, even if there were rewrites. It's not like he was kept in the dark until the last second only to find himself locked in a basement forced to act out Snyder's fantasies

You're talking out of your ass.

Only one film in history has managed to get above 150m in March OW. This isn't like summer box office.

BVS numbers close to 130m and above would be good.

$130m OW for a film that needs $800m worldwide (so I've heard) to break even isn't good. Especially if WoM is bad and it doesn't have good legs. I doubt WB will be too happy if this is between Alice in Wonderland and Hunger Games.

Besides, your comparison isn't that good. The previous OW record for December before Star Wars was The Hobbit which opened at $84m. But if TFA opened at around $90m Disney would not have been happy and the meltdowns here would be astronomical.

Now. I think it may be just a weak house like Bobby said, but it definitely feels strange.
We live in a world where most people still don't know movies premiere early on Thursday nights. I just got out of a 6pm showing and it was fairly packed, but by no means sold out.

As for how I liked the film... I liked it. A lot.

I didn't like Man of Steel for reference. Will post more thoughts when I get home.

That's definitely strange. I worked at a cinema for a couple of years and a half-packed auditorium on opening week would be unheard of. People do love to come late but not that late and not that many people.

Entertainment is less the goal than the byproduct
In “Batman v Superman,” the newspapers are full of controversy about the heroes, whom the fickle public alternately turns on and embraces.
The rest of the population — or the digitally created simulacra thereof — is required only to die en masse, to cower in terror, and to watch in wide-eyed, worshipful gratitude.

woooo

I have a feeling he considered the tradeoff worth it to get his movie and secretly hoped things would change for the better in production.

I'm in the Lincoln Square IMAX theatre in NYC for the 9:45 showing. Normally this theatre is packed for films like this, but there was no waiting on line at all.

If Man of Steel is any indication, I'm gonna be suffering a migraine after the film due to the all the loud destruction porn explosions.

It happens. Depends on the location and time. When I saw Force Awakens on the release date there must have been around 20 people at the screening. But it was a smaller cinema in North London at around the midday.

Bringing Terrio on board showed how much faith he had in Snyder and co. He just wants to make a good superhero movie, and if he takes Batman solo I'm sure he will.

But that last sentence feels on point. I can just imagine him walking around the set in his Batman suit trying desperately to believe the film would be any good.

It isn't your fault, Ben.

From what I'v heard, the sound design is REALLY bad.

Well, I've seen it. I didn't hate it, I didn't think it was awful or anything. I might have liked it more than Man of Steel. But I think there's a lot of blown opportunities and I'm pretty sure it gave me a mild headache.

Off to the spoiler thread!

well this is surprising.

I think some people have a very skewed perception of how well the legs for this will be. It'll be very lucky to make more than 2.5 times its OW for a domestic total. So if (and fyi, I do believe it'll be a significantly higher figure) the weekend number is 130, it's not making it to $350M. And that would be an incredibly disappointing figure for the domestic gross.

Actually reading more into some reviews and seeing that the editing is a mess is really putting me off. Editing is something I really like in movies (in fact I want to do it on a level higher than student films) so whenever I see really bad editing it just makes my head hurt.

Why is everyone just assuming Ben is upset over the film? Dude has been a wreck since the divorce. :/

And he probably wanted to be able to celebrate a well made film. But instead of that he's left with his thoughts:

"I don't want to let my kids see this"
"This is the second time. Is it me?"
"This is just the first of six films ... Jesus"
"I have an Academy Award ... what the fuck am I doing?"

Thanks, Zack.

Why does March do worse than May to July at the box office? March has holidays too. School isn't even out yet in May either.

The summer season used to start Memorial Day weekend. Summer weekdays (when kids are off school, and films have much larger Mon-Thurs grosses) would start 3-4 weeks later, and films made their money over much longer periods of time.

Spider-man popularized the first weekend of May start of summer when it shattered the opening weekend in 2002. I am pretty sure that Spider-man was only released that weekend to avoid Star Wars (plus the Mummy Returns did well in that slot the previous year). Prior to 2001, the first weekend of May was largely a dumping ground for smaller stuff like April is/was.

Hollywood execs are extremely slow to try new things when it comes to $100M+ films. Since trading summer weekdays for beating the Summer movie crunch seemed to be working out well for early May, we started seeing some experimentation with larger releases in March 10-15 years ago. Animated films have done well in that slot for some time due to March Break, but 300 was the first big live action success in March. That was later cemented by Alice in Wonderland and The Hunger Games, but studios still seem pretty hesitant to release more than 1-2 big films in March outside of the yearly animated flick.

All of that said, Bobby is right to point out the last 2-3 years as proof that summer release slots aren't as important as they were previously. I am confident that the very recent push into February and April will continue to pay off, and a decade from now, you will be getting huge blockbusters pretty much year round (instead of in summer and maybe late fall).
