I just hope if Naota is involved, he's completely over her with a wife and kid or something. I don't know if I could handle him being Amarao MK II.

YOOOOOOO HOLY SHIT. I gotta rewatch the original!

Anyone else watch FLCL right before hitting puberty? Resonated with me perfectly when I was 12.

Fuck yes!

I always hoped they would revisit this show. Seemed way too short, even it it added to it's production value and overall appeal.

Don't know how they could pull it off but count me in, even if it's not as good, what is there to lose? It always felt like an obscure cult classic gem so I'm not sure while people are treating it like it's untouchable and sacred.

I somehow doubt it is a direct continuation, but more of a story within the same world possibly with some of the same characters. Would be cool to see Naota and other characters a little older to see where they ended up.

Yes, and when she said
"you're just a kid" and ripped his heart out/left him, it cut deeeeeep. If they ruin that by having him become a bitter Amarao-esque victim of hers and not someone that got over her and moved on... I will be pissed.

I didn't know Kill La Kill had the same animation director as FLCL.

I've only seen one episode of KLK to see what all the fuss was about but I did get a similar wacky vibe to the animation as FLCL.

He better not show even a single hair of a cameo. All new characters, maybe Haruka and that's it.

Considering they're talking about getting the original VA back I assume the old cast will return in some form, but thing they can do is go for a Girl Meets World approach where the new lead is the daughter of Naota and Ninamori.

I'm so conflicted about this...

I've always wanted more FLCL because I love it... but at the same time I feel like it was perfect and should be left alone.

I'm excitedly scared.

Just rebought the whole series on Bluray on Black Friday, I'll have to rewatch it again.

One of the few actual anime purchases I've ever made and man, this series was a bit of an expensive pain just to get a handful of episodes on DVD. I feel for anyone who was into anime as a hobby back then that didn't live in Japan. Things seem to have only gotten better and I remember before the internet it was even worse, but with how big people are into anime in the US and elsewhere overseas, it's gotta be tough to be a fan.

6 episodes split into 3 DVDs...Jesus Christ.

When Production I.G. bought Gainax's share of the FLCL rights, they stated they were looking into doing some kind of remake/continuation of it. So this isn't out of nowhere.

All right, fair enough. This didn't spread much, based on my twitter feed when the news dropped anyway ("WHAAAAAAAT???" times a million)

I mean we've heard that AS wanted to fund a sequel, and there were rumblings IG wanted to continue it, but considering nothing ever came about most people just assumed it would never actually happen kinda like Shenmue 3 or a Samurai Jack finale/movie/final season had rumblings for years that never materialized.

The Jack news was surprising for me because a) the rumour for years was always a movie and b) Tartakovsky seemed like he'd moved on to paying work. The dream appeared dead and then suddenly, boom.

Lots of feelings now.

FLCL is probably my personal favorite show of all time. What first drew me in was the incredible animation and music, and the overall sense of chaos which left me utterly bewildered with each episode. But, unlike most shows, I watched it again... and again... and I'd always pick up new things. And seeing it more, the show's storytelling, and its development of all the different, complex, unique characters within, captured my imagination. It's more than Gainax's proving ground for digital animation techniques: it's something close to the most successful anime at being uniquely anime, constantly shifting styles with the whims of each animator, but all for the purpose of demonstrating just how confusing navigating adolescence can be.

So while my fanboy heart is thrilled by the possibilities (and if they're doing a sequel, the path they're taking with the plot is probably the only workable one), my rational self doesn't really want this. It came out of such a fertile creative environment (there's nothing quite like the Gainax of that era) that you can't really recreate by just throwing some Western dollars at Production IG. Even if Tsurumaki were back in the director's chair, I can't imagine him making something equal to his original work.

One thing I'll say is that I think branching out from anime for their creative staff is probably a good idea. Not necessarily with Katsuyuki Motohiro, but I've done some basic searches for Hideto Iwai, and he's actually a fascinating individual. There are a number of English-translated interviews with him back when he was an up-and-coming playwright and actor heading his own theater company producing frank, quasi-autobiographical plays based on modern life and social dysfunction. Will what he writes be anything like Enokido's symbolism-fueled madness? Probably not, but if he's given enough room, I'm sure it'll be something different and interesting.

Realistically, that's all I can hope for. It's not going to be the original, but I hope they stay true to its spirit. I hope they give their animators the time and freedom to create vibrant, fun animation, I hope they stick with a rock soundtrack by a great Japanese band (even if it isn't the Pillows, though I expect it will be), and I hope they tell whatever story they're telling through image and movement, not through a stiff tangle of words. It may be a longshot for them to turn this into something great, but at least they're taking a swing at it.

I think it's awesome and also a bit weird that Western sources are the ones starting to get into anime and seem to be producing some interesting new IPs and sequels to older shows.

When are we getting Cowboy Bebop Season 2?

AS helped to fund Big O season 2 back in the day, and are currently funding a new season of Samurai Jack for Toonami. I guess you can say it's becoming a trend.

Toonami also premiered Space Dandy before it hit Japan and promoted the hell out of it, but I'm not sure if they were actually involved in the creation of the show.

Oh, and since I haven't posted in this thread yet: HOLY SHIT! No way it can completely live up to the original OVA, but I'm willing to give it a shot, especially since it seems like some of the people you'd want to be involved (creator, character designer, cast) are on board and it seems like the project is coming from a genuine desire from the creators. Super cool for Adult Swim/Toonami to make this possible! And hey, if it turns out bad, it's not like it'll go back in time and ruin the original series or anything. Man, what a weird, out of left field announcement!

FLCL's ending pretty much cemented that Naota was going to grow up like a well adjusted person. I could see him Amarao-esque, as in a position of power at Department of Interstellar Immigration or even the Space Patrol Brotherhood, but not with the same hangups

Yeah, during the America anime boom (late 90's-early 00's) things were not fun. I remember dropping $20 each on DBZ VHS releases that only had 3 episodes on it, but sometimes you'd get lucky and they'd release one with 4! I remember wanting to buy the Trigun DVD boxset in a Media Play back in the day. 26 episodes... $120...

I hear Japan still has ridiculous prices on anime DVDs that only contain 3 episodes, so if anything we're lucky.

Last thing I thought could ever happen. No way it'll live up to the first but doesn't stop me from being hyped.

It's weird that I was around Naota's age when I first saw the show, with Haruko positioned as the older woman. And now I'm older than her! Jesus. What a weird feeling, I don't think I like it :lol

I could only see this working if there was essentially a triangle of Naota, Haruko and Hidomi. Basically similar to the Naota, Haruko and Amuro one, but instead of Naota being bitter and resentful and jealous he's basically trying to protect her from Haruko and she'd actually see him as a threat and a nuisance instead of just a minor annoyance

Someday I should get around seeing FLCL lol. Looks like the anime is on Funimation and it only 6 episodes currently, so why not.

Shoot I've never heard of this show but if it can get this kind of reaction from you guys I should really get on it.

The show's great, rewarding multiple viewings with bits that are easily missed with the frenetic cutting and tomfoolery interrupting some fairly existential crises among the principal cast.

I'm starting to kind of come around on this, or to the idea of it existing, at least.

Initial reaction was definitely "nope nope nope" to the idea of a direct sequel, largely because I think the show was perfect as a one-and-done, and also because the show directly affected my life more than pretty much any other piece of media has (it hit right in that early high school sweet spot for me) and I'm irrationally protective of it as a result.

But the more I think about it... maybe the new crew has something that they want to say with these characters. Maybe it'll be great! And more than anything else, even if doing a direct sequel lessens the original a bit, maybe there will be some other sad 14-year-old out there who'll see it and feel the same way I felt when I first saw the original.

And that sounds pretty fucking rad.
