Batman v. Superman RT Thread: like standing ovations in rain

There's about 30 seconds of dialogue from The Vision at the end of AoU that has more to say about what it means to be Superman than the entirety of Man of Steel, or from the sounds of it, BvS.

Age of Ultron was an underwhelming anticlimax by virtue of it coming on the heels of the universally lauded Winter Soldier, but it was a story driven by real personalities with real motivations and not just a disjointed array of plot machinations.

This scene always reminds me of how they really shouldn't have committed to giving Ultron a moving face.

This is one of my all time favorite MCU scenes. So fucking good.

This is basically an extended cut of "they will join you in the sun." It's been done. The tone is different.

Best part is "a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts." That's a solid line. Probably the best thing in the entire film.

This photo makes more sense now. I used to hate how people would point to this pic as evidence that BvS might suck, but goddamn I keep coming back to it.

Look at Gal. She's having fun and wants to lean back into the Suicide Squad who are also having fun. Everyone else is like "goddamn I wish I had as much fun as they did."

Its going to be weird for the DC fans to get hype over a fun light hearted Suicide Squad movie

The audience I watched it with didn't laugh, cheer or really react once through the film. Credits rolled and people got up and left in silence. The whole movie is a giant, joyless mess.

My exact same thoughts, right down to theatre reaction. I've never seen an opening night crowd for a movie this big that dead.

Fuckin' ouch. A huge part of the fun of openings for these blockbusters is audience engagement. Force Awakens was a blast to see in theatres, and a big part of it (alongside the film being legitimately good of course) was the sheer joy of the audience throughout (hell, it was still the same two months later). Same thing with Deadpool. I couldn't imagine seeing a blockbuster with a dead audience. Even fairly bad ones tend to have at least some audience engagement. A collective chuckle here or there.

What the fuck is going on here that people think Iron Man 3 was

a. a bad film
or
b. better than 2?

I get it, opinions and all, but some of this shit is warped.

Come on, even if you dislike Iron Man 3 there's no way it's worse than Iron Man 2, that movie is a complete all-around mess that's only saved from being the worst in the series by the mere existence of Thor movies.

Even more damning is there was actually a lot of hooting and cheering when the movie started, so that particular crowd was definitely open to expressing their feelings. The film just sucked it all from them.

Moving mouth, specifically. Wild animated eyes with a stationary mouth would have made him look super psycho. Sad they didn't do that.

Basically there are about half a dozen better directions they could have taken Ultron's facial design that didn't include robo-teeth

My theater cheered when Diana showed up to fight.

Probably the one part worth cheering for.

Also made me pretty happy considering how many film executives thought giving her a movie was impossible.

I felt pretty lame since I was the only dude who got pumped when she showed up with the soundtrack kicking in.

I really hope her movie nails it, it's waaaaaaaaaaay past due for a WW film already.

And Film Execs. are dumb. >_> I am convinced after this.

This was posted on my facebook:

I don't know how anyone could seriously call MoS a gamechanger but you do you, facebook guy. I bet he wouldn't be talking about how you can't trust Rotten Tomatoes if the consensus went the other way though.

Facebook guy is the hero WB needs.

I think I'm okay with this movie. For whatever reason.

Maybe it was just the hyperbolic reviews that got my expectations so low, but I left the theater thinking "Whatever, that was serviceable."

I just got back. Um.

This is how I feel as well.

So, a few weeks ago I went to see Gods of Egypt, because while it looked astoundingly awful, I thought it would head into so bad it's, well, if not good then at least entertaining territory. And that it was - my daughter and I had a hoot at it.

These are the ways Gods of Egypt was a better film than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice:

  • It had a semi-coherent narrative through line
  • Characters were allowed to feel a range of emotions, most notably, joy
  • Characters were allowed to look like they were having fun
  • It knew not to take itself too seriously
  • It had better romantic tension between the main couple. Mind you, the romance was awful.
  • The action was shot and edited in a way that you could tell what was going on, and where characters were in relation to one another.
  • The bad guy had clear motivation and goals
Gods of Egypt was the worst big budget movie I'd ever seen at the time, but it was entertaining in spite of itself, or perhaps because of itself. It's now the second worst.

More than anything, BvS: DoJ is utterly joyless. Everything progresses with funereal solemness, even when it's being silly. Everything is just so heavy handed. There's an early shot of Lex Luthor walking down a hallway from behind. It's brightly lit (which is rare), shot from a low angle, in slow motion, his lab coat flowing majestically behind him while loud, deep pounding music portends something Significant happening, though the film has had no time to build up to anything at this point. Nothing about that moment warranted the music, the slow motion, the elevation of a character walking somewhere to a major event. I burst out laughing at this scene - it was just so randomly awful. But it was one of the only times the film was so bad it was actually funny. For the most part, it's simply bad. And that's how most of the movie goes. I squirmed a lot.

Gal Gadot is the only actor allowed to look like she was enjoying herself, a bit, and her character is allowed to elevate her scenes simply with how she carries herself. She's got a deft touch, especially when Wonder Woman is doing her thing. She's the best thing about the movie, IMO. Affleck was good as Batman, and his rage and motivation was really the heart of the film. I'd love to see a stand alone Batman film with him, though with a different director. (Though of course, his Bruce Wayne was not allowed a smidgen of fun. At least Bale looked like he was enjoying himself.)

Two hours in, just when the movie has gotten its first lift of narrative momentum and we're heading into the climax, everything is literally put on hold to run a series of commercials for the future Justice League movie. Just right smack in the middle of things. At least Marvel knew to put their most overt hooks after the credits! It totally kills the forward momentum the movie had going.

The audience I watched it with didn't laugh, cheer or really react once through the film. Credits rolled and people got up and left in silence. The whole movie is a giant, joyless mess.

Jesus, I can't take any more, I'm going to bed forever

You would have been right at home in my theater. It seemed mostly men too if the line for the bathroom after was any indication.

People here seem to be really stuck on joy being an essential part of the moviegoing experience.

You'd all probably call Faith the worst Cure album.

It's an important human emotion, which none of the humans (and non-humans) in the film are allowed to express. Or even basic happiness. Or mirth. Or anything that would let them have fun. That makes them much harder to relate to, it limits what the actors have to work with and it cuts back on the range of emotions we feel through the film. The emotional highs in this movie are Wonder Woman showing up, and the ending credits.

Yeah no. That "join you in the sun" is a random stupid line that is not supported by anything in the film. Vision's words are reflection of how he sees humanity has behaved so far and the potential he sees in them to do good. There's a tone of hope and trust placed by Vision in his words based on his experience. The sun line, OTOH, was a lot of hot air spoken by an alien who seems to think that humanity are lower beings who'd follow their God.

I mean WTF?! Talk about baseless comparison.

I don't think I'll ever be able to watch that interview with Affleck. It's hard enough to just look at those gifs. I legit feel bad for the dude. He just looks so defeated. I kind of want to hug him. :(

They know what's up.

It's one of the few moments in the movie where you really feel that triumph and heroism kicking in. It's great.
If this is a serious question, then yes it is. Better then Thor 2, Iron Man 2 and 3. On par with Captain America the First Avenger and Thor 1 in my opinion.

Naw breh.

If BVS is "serviceable" than the MCU are academy winners.

And we all know that couldn't be farther from the truth.

So should I go see this movie anyway? The infamous Trailer #2 planted little seeds of dislike for this movie in me, which critics have since confirmed, are justified.

I'm trying to come up with a list:

For:

1. I get material for bashing this movie for weeks to come
2. I get material for bashing this movie for weeks to come
3. Wonder Woman is apparently great.
4. Finally, a Batman that can fight.
5. Batman being awesome.
6. Explosions, explosions, explosions!

Against:

1. Apparently there's even more senseless destruction compared to MoS and I reached my limit by the Zod fight. Apparently at least MoS was coherent (I was okay with MoS).
2. I have a high tolerance for mediocre movies but apparently this one takes the cake.
3. I might lose a few brain cells after watching this.

From all the shit I've given it I do have to admit, that Wonder Woman theme was fucking great.

It actually felt completely out of place because it was so heroic.

MCU has some pretty bad movies, like the one's I mentioned. Found more joy out of 1 scene in BvS then all of those movies combined.

Yeah, I can't watch it either. He put his all into the film and is excellent and should be proud of it. But he doesn't look like he's enjoying any of it due to the reception the rest of the film is getting.

One of the best surprises in the movie, imagine the reaction if Wonder Woman was not featured in the trailer nor you even knew she was to be in the movie..... movie fans would have lost the plot!!!!

"Is she with you" is my most listened to track from the deluxe edition soundtrack.

This picture actually infuriates me:

Thor 2 isn't even a fucking movie. It was a video of actors showing up and reading excuses for why they should be there. They knew that's what it was when they were making it, and it shows in the final product.

There's gotta be something out there you dislike more than Thor 2. lol

We shouldn't feel bad about Affleck. He's not stupid, I bet he knew this movie had some problems and yet Batman is what people liked more in the movie.
