But it gave Cap the push he needed to not trust shield anymore. Which is why he breaks away. And it showed that even the government needs to be in check, and now civil war, the government is pushing back.

Twitter is cesspool of people who tweeted glowing early reviews before the embargo lifted earlier this week.

I would say people who gave it glowing recommendations are not being 100% honest or critical with the film. OR Maybe THEY just love mindless-plotless-storyless action and don't care either way.

Well, actually it did transcend the genre in some very specific ways, largely due to its spy thriller elements. The Winter Soldier and The Dark Knight both took the superhero framework and transformed it from a genre into a canvas that allowed other genres to be layered onto it.

In fact, think First Class also belongs on that list. They married crime, spy and political thriller elements with the superhero genre in very interesting ways. And I don't even believe the traditional superhero story has gone stale yet, as long as the characters are compelling.

But I liked it none the less. I think it made sense and I didn't see it from that perspective. Look at what hydra was building in First avenger? To me that's why Cap freaked out on FURY.

He knows where it leads. ANd seeing those were like, " holly shit shield gone off the deep end in preventive warfare". Which hearkens back to his experience with hydra in FIrst avenger.

I agree that it's a superhero movie first and foremost but it's not unreasonable to call a superhero take on the spy thriller genre. It always feels like people push against the spy thriller label for Winter Soldier to take it down a peg. Conversely, it's not fair to call it a 70s political thriller either.

Those elements are so superficial though. It's like people comparing TDK to Heat just because there was a stylish heist scene. Same thing with Winter Soldier. Outside of some very superficial stylings, there is very little in common between Winter Soldier and some espionage films from the 1970s. They are great movies in their own right, but some of that stuff gets overblown seemingly by people who want them to be more than just comic book movies.
 
Just rewatched two episodes of Justice League animated, A Better World duo episodes. So goddamn good. Makes me wish they would just make live action versions of the show. :/

A small deviation from an established, successful framework is still a deviation. I'm not saying those movies completely revolutionized the medium, but I'm sure their critical and commercial success can be attributed to the how positively the risks they took were received by critics and audiences alike.

And the more incrementally experimental these blockbusters get, the more they inspire greater experimentation. Like how the Deadpool folks pointed to something like Guardians and said "Hey, that worked out great, so maybe we can go out on a limb with this one."

I just think that referring to the movie as a spy thriller really isn't reflective of the movie at all. A lot of the movie worked so well not because of the spy elements, but because of the grounded nature of it and the ideals that Captain America represents. Its still structurally a superhero movie, but the political implications take the front seat for about half of the film. It's probably the same reason Civil War will be such a hit because ideology will take the front seat for the first act or two of the movie; though I'm half expecting the movie to retread some of the stuff laid out in Winter Soldier.

Personal opinion? No.

If you're not hard-core convinced to see this already, or don't feel the need to see it in theaters for the full experience, I would say that it is not even worth that much. I would wait to rent it. That way you might get access to the extended cut which may improve it, but at the very least you could skip through it or turn it off if you don't like it.

Then again I was never wowed by anything they showed, but I was hopeful as I liked some aspects of MoS. The movie was an absolute trainwreck to me in plot, characters and actual editing. It just wasn't a fun experience to watch, so it's hard to recommend someone who is on the fence to see it now rather than wait.

Wonder Woman....she was boss though. Kinda more interested to see her solo movie than anything else the DCCU comes up with now.

We have our first empirical data on audience reception. Batman v Superman received a B Cinemascore.

For what it's worth, this is for the first night. First night for a franchise film like this is filled with the biggest fans all rushing to see it opening night. They're the ones most likely to give a movie a glowing score. B is lower than any Twilight or Transformers movie, for example.

Man of Steel got an A-
Batman Forever got an A-
Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 both got a B+
X-Men Origins: Wolverine got a B+
Daredevil and Elektra both got a B
Green Lantern got a B
CATWOMAN got a B

And since someone's going to ask, Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 got an A- and A, respectively.

Sure, I don't disagree with what you're saying, but the spy tropes are a significant element that lasts all the way to the third act. Its disingenuous to deny that they're a defining element of the film that differentiates it from other superhero films even if it descends into more typical superhero fare by its conclusion.

Anywho, it looks like BvS got a B cinemascore.

I like how the reactions on this film make it seem it started assaulting families or something. Can't wait to see how much of a mess it is but thankfully, I'm only in it for Bats and the action scenes. Everyone should have known by now because Snyder's been in a decline after Watchmen.

Is this better than Suckerpunch atleast?
 
Snyder should call up marvel and Sony and direct a spiderman movie. Make Peter Parker older angry and pissed off. He has several guns strapped on him so he can easily take out his enemies. Have Black cat show up and have exactly 14 lines in the 3 hour movie. Spiderman also teams up with Carnage because he is cool and kills people. There is citywide damage from the epic fights but those places didn't have people in them.

I would consider them both bad movies equally, but for completely different reasons.

I don't think you can compare the two at all really, but you especially can't compare them fairly until the directors cut of this film comes out and you can see if that changes anything. I'm doubting that it will completely though, the problems with this movie run deeper than just the story being chopped up.

It's completely useless to use as any sort of measuring stick. You're not going to be able to translate this into any numbers.

But it does serve as a fairly consistent "did the audience walk out feeling like they got what they went in for" gauge. People who paid to see BvS on opening night thought it was a B. That doesn't mean nothing. If nothing else, we at least know that people who scored the movie actually watched it, unlike user ratings on RT, MC, IMDb, etc.
