Snyder gets lot of blame, but movies have so many people involved. The writers for example are getting a total pass while its all being put on Snyders shoulders? Every aspect he is not part of, including the design of a character is not his call to make, many of these things are decided by producers and execs in the project.

Actually in the case of BvS I think a lot of people's annoyances could probably be laid at WB or Snyder over someone like Terrio...Snyder was also quite involved in the designs of characters and did sketches and signed off on things iirc. Or at least his wife did but they work as a pair anyway. For BvS, Deborah Snyder said that things like the Knightmare sequence were only put in when they were mid-filming and SS and WW were being written or in pre-production etc and they thought it'd be cool to have these things that would pay off in Wonder Woman (the photograph) or Knightmare (Justice League).

It doesn't exactly sound that smart to me, but I post on NeoGAF, I don't make movies :P

Man of Steel's first Monday was less than $900k below Age of Ultron's first Monday. Man of Steel made another ~$150M after day 4. Age of Ultron made over $250M.

People getting their hopes up for good legs are going to see that kids being off school makes a big difference to the weekdays. Not so much to the weekends.

What's with the "fuck da critics" stuff around this movie? Is this like "librul media"? I don't remember another movie having this kind of effect to this degree.

It's just DC fanboys unable to handle that their faves could never reach the heights of Mahvel.

Perhaps a symptom of the 5 or 6 threads floating on page 1 of this forum over the weekend dedicated to shitting on the movie. I mean, there's less Xbox fans posting on gaming side as well. Nobody likes seeing their favorite things get shit on.

Good legs? No. The worst legs of any major blockbuster EVER!!!? Probably, not.

Nail on head.

You're looking at a big echo chamber of people trying to convince themselves that what they like/believe is good and right, and that everyone else is biased/dumb/doesn't get it.

Seems like the opposite to me, people having to make sure everyone knows how bad the movie is

Comparison to first movie, previous March record holder, and WB's highest grosser:

Man of Steel:
$128mil opening weekend
$12mil first Monday
$291mil final gross

Furious 7:
$147mil opening weekend
$14mil first Monday
$353mil final gross

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2:
$169mil opening weekend
$19mil first Monday
$383mil final gross

Batman v Superman:
$166mil opening weekend
$15mil first Monday
??? final gross

Or maybe it's just people talking to each other about the things they think, and there's no real ulterior motive behind it for the large number of participants, beyond the very basic sharing of opinion.

I find the level of people disbelieving in such a basic scenario might have the roots of that disbelief buried in their own weird motives regarding the possible effects of their speech.

This is a forum where people share their opinions and talk about things like movies, particularly in threads about those movies. The ulterior motive you are finding is, people wanting to share their opinion. It's okay to disagree with them.

It's just the suggestion that the critics are part of some elite group conspiring for this movie to fail is amusing to me

I loved the film, but I have to admit it's been a blast discussing it at length. Even when the stupid 'LOL, BUT WHY DOES BATMAN GO TO GOTHAM' posts start up again.

Considering Sucker Punch exists, I would understand if this conspiracy existed. I wouldn't agree with it, but I can understand! :)

I'm just saying that the comparison to other big comic films doesn't really hold given the fact that Monday was a holiday for a lot of schools, when all the first week of May openers are regular school day Mondays.

Look at Hunger Games in 2012. Its third weekend was Easter Weekend. Its Friday drop was about 15% softer than its Saturday and Sunday drop compared to the previous week. It's Easter Monday drop was 8% week-to-week. Tuesday and Wednesday were 38%.

BvS' Monday is likely inflated by at least 20%. The rest of the week will be moderately inflated since this week is still a popular spring break week. Next week's weekday drops will be very large. This Friday's drop will be very large. We will need to see how the film holds on Sat/Sun to start talking about legs.

There's been a weird fanboy tribalism and siege mentality around this film since it was announced (sometimes getting into outright persecution complex territory), to the extent that this very forum has had a series of threads in OTC that have functioned primarily as a refuge for Snyder/MoS fans from the less positive sentiments in the main OT. This is just the latest permutation of it: the notion that "the critics" aren't just people who get paid to write about movies they watch, but a hostile tribe out to destroy BvS.

Saying critics don't matter because a heavily marketed and easy to market blockbuster made a ton of money is like saying dentists don't matter because candy sales spike around halloween.

Haven't seen the film yet. But I could easily see myself falling into the camp of:

Movies are pretty subjective, critics may know the medium well enough to critique it structurally but in the end review aggregates are only decent indicators for whether you will enjoy said film or not.

I treat the scores of review aggregates as percentage chance that I will enjoy a film. The reviews themselves can give more insight. But I'm also a bit biased as I could like the film even if most of it is dogshit drivel as long as Batfleck is good and serves as a starting point for good future batman and or JL films.

Meh

Even if the majority of schools were out this week, consider that HP8's first Monday was in July when all kids were out of school. It had a fairly good hold from Sunday - Monday (-49%), but fell like a rock in its second weekend (-72%). Kids being in or out of school can make a big difference during the week, but probably has no significant effect on weekends. We still have to wait until this weekend to see how BvS is actually going to hold.

It's basically fine to say "I don't care what critics think, I enjoyed the film."

It is not okay to concoct elaborate conspiracy theories, accuse critics of "just not getting it", or to assume everyone who dislikes the film is a Marvel fanboy.

I know, right?

Not really fair to pit one Ant-Man against both Batman AND Superman. Can Batman and Superman bring in one Ant-Man's worth of Box Office each? Stay tuned!

(We'll pretend that Wonder Woman counted for two Falcons because, let's be honest, no one goes to the movies to see Falcon).

Yeah, and it's even worse when the likes of fuckin' Variety run articles painting this past weekend as some kind of massive blow to the relevance of film criticism.

Even setting aside the absurd notion that critics are Very Deeply Concerned with their ability to impact BO: it features two of the most popular and iconic characters in all of pop culture, it had a massive marketing budget behind it, and there's no blockbuster competition for another three weeks. What else were people going to see?

The stuff about critics getting paid off/having a bias/trying to sink the movie has been really...strange to behold. Especially since I'm willing to bet most critics don't think of themselves as word of God or anything like that, nor are they coming in with any preconceived desire to demolish a film.

Have you seen the OT threads for this movie in the last three years? Did you see the RT/Review threads? I can't exactly blame them.

Kids in my class are watching it on streaming sites, only two went and saw the movie in the cinema :/

They liked it though.

Are first weekend leaks of popular films still shakey cam/smartphone recordings that are too dark to see anything during night scenes, feature people getting up to go to the bathroom, and the filmer putting his camera in his lap when staff walks by (like they were 15 years ago)?

Not sure why people still bother with those. Wait 3 months for the home video release.

Classy. But yeah, I know people like that too. I judge less on the morality of doing it (they don't give an f) but more on how they can even tolerate such a shit quality viewing experience.

Variety is at least 7 years late to the party. Rotten Tomatoes was going full steam in 2009, and that didn't prevent Revenge of the Fallen from grossing $200M in 5 days (back when that was still a huge feat).

Not sure why this is surprising. Who doesn't want to see Devastator's testicles in IMAX?

Nope, people put up screeners and recordings taken from theater employees nowadays. The quality isn't always amazing but they're much better than the old bootlegs.

I would guess so.

Edit: nvm. I don't actually know.

And how would you know that exactly

I'm hoping now that home release is indeed about 3 months, even for successful blockbusters, more people will do just that. I think why many might still do it is the whole "watercooler" effect, in that people only want to talk about it when it first comes out.

Not me though. If I decide to not see it in theaters, I'll wait. Especially since I can watch the new releases at home in UHD with HDR.

I don't want this movie to fail. I think you may have misinterpreted my post. Or maybe I'm misunderstanding yours. I want this movie to crush the haters.
Ahh, I misinterpreted your gif. It's just weird people trying to keep some of the weakest Marvel movies like I3 or AoU as any sort of good standard for comic book movies lol.. If quality meant sales, we would see different CBM movies at the top in terms of sales.

I do expect Civil War to be the better film due to the Russos and sell more than this though, esp since Spidey is in.

There are some clips that got onto Instagram. The quality's...not so great (particularly the sound).

Well shit, now we have to have a 2 page discussion about how awesome Iron Man 3 is.

I'm kidding, let's not.

But seriously Iron Man 3 is awesome.
