True. More competent management would have taken one look at MoS' reception and concluded that Snyder was exactly the wrong person to launch a DCCU.

I think this THR article from last year on WB's managerial approach to universe-building deserves another read:

Reading this was frightening. Why were there 5 writers for Wonder Woman, some of them going nameless. This sounds like asking people to eat pizza made by 5 blindfolded chefs.
Warners hired five writers not to work together but to compete

The writer of Pan is writing Wonder Woman?

Burn it down. I don't want to see German Aristocrats chanting the opening lines to A Nirvana song.

In regards to the box office, WB must be slightly nervous. Yeah, they broke a record, but the opened 15 Million above Deadpool, which regardless of the idiot parents was an R rated film. Deadpool also was starring a relatively unknown hero compared to Batman and Superman. The Monday number is great for what it is, but the weekend should be telling to see how it unfolds.

The script to Pan really wasn't the issue with Pan

In fact, the script is what got it made. It was on the black list of best unpublished screenplays.

It's only after the script was bought that it got shit up. From what I understand, all the nonsense with Jackman singing Teen Spirit isn't on the page.

But that was a good movie directed by a man that would eventually win an Academy Award. Were those five writers hired to compete against each other too?

My point is five writers isn't inherently a bad thing.

Also that Patty Jenkins left Thor 2 because of creative differences. So she doesn't strike me as someone who'd stay on a project unless her vision was the primary one. In which case, the amount of writers is moot.

Whaaaaatttttt?

Don't worry I got your point. I just checked to see who Patty Jenkins was and she's the director of Monster...WW could actually be good then.

Patty Jenkins doesn't have enough directing credits to her name to judge much.

The director of Green Lantern also directed Goldeneye and Casino Royale.

And Mask of Zorro!!

And Legend of Zorro...

We'll see how Patty Jenkins does, but I'll admit Maclaren had me more excited. Not merely for running WW, it'd have been her debut in big films.

Patty Jenkins passes the most important test for a comic book movie director: she worked on Arrested Development. Therefore, Wonder Woman will be good. QED.

Did you know Paul Feig also directed episodes of AD? the more you know.

Jenkins leaving Thor 2 implies she might have a good eye for bad projects, which that movie very much was. That gives me a glimmer of hope.

On the positive side of things, Batman v Superman made $31M overseas yesterday, bringing the WW total to $468M.

My guess is that it will head into this weekend with $575-600M.

Yeah that's not bad. The Monday of 15M was better then Avengers Ultron's Monday of 13M.

Zootopia's Monday is the most impressive thing I've seen in a while. When was the last time the fourth Monday was the biggest yet for any movie?

Not counting platform releases, maybe Frozen? Its fourth Monday was Dec 22nd, and its fifth Monday was Dec 29th. Both of those were its biggest Mondays to date.

Great numbers yesterday. So after the weekend it should be at $700something?

$575M + 65% drops WW for the weekend would be $735M

EDIT: Actually, that first number included early OS openings and the Thursday previews (which were $44M OS and close to $28M Dom)

Cynical: $575M + 65% drops WW would be $710M

Optimistic: $600M + 55% drops WW would be $770M

James Wan's track record is pretty bad. They have a big chance of sinking Aquaman forever, dude is not getting a second chance like Green Lantern (which will always make WB crave that Star Wars money).

???

Furious 7 1.5B

The Conjuring 318M on a 20M budget

Saw 103M on a 1.2M budget.

Insidious 2 161M on a 5M budget.

Insidious 97M on a 1.5M budget

His track record is very strong. Big budget, low budget, he makes movies people want to see.

Critically I mean. The Conjuring is his only good movie I've seen (everything but Furious 7)

So besides Civil War, BvS, Finding Dory, and MAYBE Zootopia (depending on late legs and Japan), what are the other films that have a decent shot at $1B this year?

EDIT: Add Rogue One to the list

Independence Day: Resurgence

That has a great chance to hit a 1B.

I think it's gonna have those JW feels...
What am I a fucking meme lol!!! I expect it to be at least fun, good? No. Fun? Yes. Now if it's either nor and just a drag to shit there and watch it then yeah, fine. I'll meme on.

Considering how much China has grown since 2012... possibly Ice Age? Maybe not? Idk.

Shoot didn't realize that. Still, those were over the lucrative Christmas holidays. Not nearly as odd as Zootopia's date, which like only half the schools were off on.
