PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Wow. If this is true, I expect some severe backlash.

But as soon as people see God of War 4 footage they will forget everything and throw money at it.

I've heard Phil talk vaguely about upgrades, but has there been anything about an XB1.5?

There's been plenty of talk about the PS4k. Maybe I missed the rumors around an XB1.5.

An this is Sony's biggest fuck up. They are losing the messaging game in a spectacular way because they follow some inflexible PR plan. It will be even more stupid when they come out with a "the devs want it" line after their tagline has been #4theplayers for 3 years.

After thinking about it for a second, this has to be an elaborate (and oddly timed) April fools day joke, right?

Sony is launching a $400 VR set in the Fall, they can't really expect people to want to dish out bucks for that if an updated PS4 is about to be out.

So they're releasing a $400 headset and a $400-500 box within a short timespan and expect people to be totally cool with that.

This makes me feel really bad about games in general. MS is already planning similar bullshit and Nintendo seems to continue to have no interest in pursuing a similar market. Ugh.

Watch games being a ridiculous unoptimized mess. If developers struggle to release a game for one closed platform running decently, imagine having to optimise it for 2 different configurations. PSpoor owners am cry.

Well while it's somewhat frustrating news because I bought my PS4 like three months ago, if E3 comes and Sony tells us that they're making all future PlayStation platforms backwards compatible with PS4, there's actually no problem at all. I can get to play these games with fancier looks when I get a PS5.

Don't know what's the logic with the "I'm done with consoles" posts.

Relax, PS4K is only 2x faster so it will run at 15fps on PS4.

Wouldn't this thing be like 2 years away from launching?? Assuming its only at the point that dev kits are in some hands, and they don't have the hardware finalized?

Maybe they are waiting for the others to say something before picking a CPU, lime the did with the ram

You don't need to replace your entire PC every 3 years.

That's only because long generational consoles were holding it back. Now that they will be pushing ultra settings, PC users are going to have to adapt or be beaten by consoles like how early xbox 360 was the most powerful on market around 2005.

Basically incremental updates in consoles will mean that PC users must upgrade earlier to catch up or fear losing their graphical advantage. This move is going to have massive consequences for both PC and console players.

Record sales and profits = dropping the ball.

Yes, some games will probably do that.

That said I expect a lot to just make even better graphics and/or framerates at 1080p because that's what the vast majority of their customers will be running the games at anyway.

Could you see a situation where there as many native 4K games on the PS4K as there were 1080p games on the PS3?

A GPU twice as powerful is really enough to have games running both at 4K and better performance than the PS4? I find it very unlikely.

Unless these games that take advantage of the hardware will actually be 1080p.

This sound like the worst of all options.

Fragmenting the PS4 base, and pretty much required for PSVR. I called that last part, but the first part seems to stupid be thought a good idea.

Short Sony, we got a great thing going, how can we fuck it up.

CPU option speculation:

* Jaguar - clocked the same as standard PS4.
* Jaguar - clocked faster than standard PS4
* Puma - already designed with faster clock than Jaguar
* Zen - new CPU arch. but still x86, would not break compatibility(?)

Someone please explain to me exactly how this will "kill Playstation and Sony"?

Are you all that daft? I fail to see how it will. Do you guys think everyone will:

A) Sell their PS4 and move to Xbox (who are also doing the same thing).

B) Move to PC where it's even more expensive to upgrade.

C) Give up their favourite hobby.

Come on man, what's wrong with you all? You'll all just eventually buy it anyway so why moan about it now? It's happening and the way I see it is, either accept the situation or give up gaming all together.

How is PC more expensive to upgrade though?

You do if you want the best possible graphical output. I would say that most core gamers fall into this category.
And that's who they'll target first. When the costs come down a bit they'll target the usual crowd.
How is PC more expensive to upgrade though?
How isn't it? Have you seen the AAA games recommended specs from last year and this year's games? (I know you will have) Unless you want to play the latest games at 20fps with low to medium settings your forced to upgrade your GPU and CPU and it's looking increasingly like RAM will be the next thing that's forced to upgrade.

At the point both Sony and Microsoft should both drop the name numbering and just go with Playstation and XBOX and release updates every 2 or 3 years. Nintendo should follow as well.

This makes me so excited to see what GTA VI will look like.

As someone who really cares about graphics and resolution but will never be a PC gamer, this new paradigm is perfect for me. Can't wait.

Also, it's fun to think of which games might be retrospective patches to unlock the framerate etc. My mind's drawing a blank at the moment.

Considering some devs don't know how to optimise for shit on the current PS4 this makes me worried about the even crappier ports once the PS4K optimised games will come out...

They'll be making the games for the established base on the PS4 and XB1. Whatever they can do with the extra power will be just that - extra. A boost to FPS or resolution, or texture quality or anisotropic filtering etc. We're already getting games that are heavily downgraded from the trailers we see running off high-end PCs. This just allows some of us to catch up a bit.

Checking Deep Down's wiki page led to a quote with Ono that's still in development from Feb 2015 (google translate):

http://www.4gamer.net/games/289/G028968/20150203066/

I thought it was dead as well.

Here's my translation:

Gematsu said:
“Deep Down will take a little more time to finish,” Ono said. “There seems to be rumors that development has come to a stop, but those aren’t true.”

Ono continued, “It might be a while ahead, but we hope to show you something truly different from what was shown previously. In fact, since we announced it, the framework behind it has grown much larger to the point that what we had before may well have been a dud.”

The Capcom producer expressed his concerns with not launching with the game’s necessary parts, which ultimately led to its delay.

“Since maintaining an online game service is a long-term challenge, if you don’t properly create necessary parts of it in time for the launch, players won’t stick around long even if it’s interesting,” Ono said. “We eventually came to have concerns that Deep Down wouldn’t initially establish itself well with consumers, so we decided to put aside more time so we could perfect it.”

why is this not PS5? this jump is crazy and to get to it, owners basically have to say farewell to their whole cash sum paid on PS4.

Its actually more than ok. Its the best thing to happen to this industry.

Say goodbye to holding onto old ass technology for 6 or more years.

Such a great move for this industry

Get a PC if you want a PC. Longing for a PC with restricted access (PSN only) is crazy.

$500 without a trade in program?

Sony can't really think that's going to have wide market appeal outside of the more avid gamer demographic, can they? Let's hope MS isn't going the same way if this is true.

Did Sony officially announce PS4k and date? Everything is speculation until its announce similar to the 4GB vs 8GB Ram fiasco up to PS4 launch.

This is a huge mistake. I can't contemplate why they would think this a smart move. This makes me want to cancel my PSVR, as it seems I would need to buy a new system for the best out of it.

Im looking at my amazon pre-order and contemplating this... might as well let someone else have my pre-order

Look at this thread. People here are okay with it, and can't wait to let Sony drain their bank accounts with new incremental consoles every 3 years.
