PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

How is people that already own a PS4 okay with this? Basically an half-gen upgrade for full price, and no news about a trade-in option. I hope this doesn't become a trend, I'd rather have a new full gen after 5 years than an half-assed one after half the time.

I really hope this won't be confirmed.

Don't upgrade. What's the big deal. You don't know if they are dropping get support, which they won't do, so who cares.

Did you buy an XBOX One elite console with SSD and elite controller? That was about the same price bump with less value then what's offered here.

If I can run the division dailies without lag with 20 guys on the screen, I'm gonna upgrade. If you don't want to, then don't. Who cares.

Sounds like a substantial upgrade. Hopefully Microsoft is ready with their upgraded hardware. I'd love to sell my XB1 for an upgraded one and then maybe buy an old Ps4 some time in 2017 if NX doesn't grab my attention.

This confuses me about the 'move to PC' people. So buying a new card for $300 is ok after 3 years but spending the same(ish) on a mid gen refresh is not?

This would honestly hurt a lot less if Sony didn't charge for online as well.

So essentially you'll be having a PC that's at the top of the line if you choose to spend $300 every 3 years

vs

PS4 that you have to pay $50 a year for online and then $300 again after 3 years to upgrade to a new model.

The end result is PC being far cheaper proposition especially with how devs are all porting to PC nowadays.

If I have to play even more lower res and lower framerate games or games with feature loss...That considerable sacrifices line is scary

Hyrule Warriors Legends came out recently and is unplayable on regular 3DS. If shit like this happens to the ps4 at a larger scale...

Regret all the money they'll make for having a 4k device this holiday that is associated with the PS4 name?

Totally.

I suspect Sega was dreaming about all the money that they were gonna make from 32X too. And Microsoft no doubt thought they had this new console gen sown up because they had Kinect and TV and always online. And Nintendo had the biggest console of the gen with the Wii - how could the Wii U fail? They even kept the name the same!

No that should be Kaz's face instead of Mattrick and the people in the boat should have the Gaf logo as their face.

I don't know how anyone can agree with the sacrifices part.

One thing is getting the standard 1080p30fps game and then ps4k getting whatever they want, I would be ok with this because ps4k is not fucking with me and my purchase.

But sacrifices sound like I'm going to start getting gimped games ala shadow of mordor oldgen and that's ridiculous. If that happens I'm so fucking done.

of course its gonna happen

sony can say all they want how games will be designed to run on both
but lets be real. every single developer is going to make the game look/run its best on the new console because thats the one that will be shown off and advertised

I cannot imagine that Sony will let games be developed so that they are not playable on PS4. PS4 will be 1080p/30 medium settings and PS4K 1080p/30 high settings for example. They would be very stupid to let 40 million PS4 users rot with unoptimized versions of the games.

I'm down for console power increments every two years. Last gen was fucking shit. And the new consoles are showing their age already (and before anyonr gets defensive im sorry but struggling to hold 30fps with little to no aliasing in most games already is not what I expected)

You do if you want the best possible graphical output. I would say that most core gamers fall into this category.

Well, if you want the best possible graphical output, you'd be upgrading your graphics card every few years as well for 300~500 dollars, depending. I know the precedent is different but still, not all PC gamers upgrade to stay in the "best" category. If graphics is the dragon someone is chasing, they'll be spending a console's worth of money on a graphics card or console model, if this PS4K stuff is for real. Either way, ideally there is room and support for a "middle" so to speak.

Sounds sweet, I'm in.

I do hope some devs will go the extra mile and patch their old games to enhance performance on the new hardware.

Yes, I'm looking at you, CDPR. Make The Witcher 3 even better on PS4K pls

This confuses me about the 'move to PC' people. So buying a new card for $300 is ok after 3 years but spending the same(ish) on a mid gen refresh is not?

1. I'd rather upgrade components than whole consoles. The latter is wasteful and not environmentally friendly.

2. With PCs you can stick with older hardware longer as games have user adjustable settings. With consoles your left at the mercy of developers to make games run well on the older versions of the console. Granted, that probably won't be an issue unless the user base for the 4k gets larger than the user base for the base model.

In general, I just don't like the approach. It gets consoles closer to PCs without the benefits of PCs (open marketplace equals lower prices for digital games, easier to upgrade individual components, free online play etc.).

Because realistically, nothing will change.

Sony isn't going to drop 40 million active consoles anytime soon, neither are developers.

The thing is not drop.
The thing is focus.
If all games are made for PS4 with "bonus" on PS4K then "ok" ( I still dont agree with this but it would not be that bad)
But we are reading about sacrifices wich means games developed for PS4K and capped for PS4!

Who would have thought that console wars would actually be a civil war?

It won't work. This is not like an expansion pack in the N64 days: we are talking having to buy a new console altogether. You can't patch 4K. So this will divide the players even moreso than PS + already does with paid multiplayer.

This is not the future I want. Games are already super costly and now you're telling me that I'll need a new PS4 to get the real(TM) experience? There's just no way this doesn't backfire. It's a ticking time bomb really.

So let me get this straight: if I want a PS4 for PSVR, it will cost me $1000+ CAD. lulz. Why wouldn't I buy a PC for that kind of money?

Sony would be so stupid to release a major $500 product this Fall (PSVR) and tell consumers that to really take advantage of it they need to rebuy the PS4 at $400. Not happy about this.

This is some PC gaming bullshit, which is why I stopped for the most part PC gaming.

SIGH

Goddamit Sony.

I really give no fucks about VR or 4K so I'll upgrade once a game releases that performs like hot shit on the PS4.

This confuses me about the 'move to PC' people. So buying a new card for $300 is ok after 3 years but spending the same(ish) on a mid gen refresh is not?

Having to do a similar upgrade for a console eliminates the only advantage console has. PC has Steam Sales, entire genres not truly available on console, moust + keyboard controls, etc.

With a Console though if you buy it early on you know you are getting at least 5 years (lately, more like 6 or 7) of games, and you also know that your experience won't be lesser than anyone else who owns that console.

Maybe not any more.

This makes me so excited to see what GTA VI will look like.

As someone who really cares about graphics and resolution but will never be a PC gamer, this new paradigm is perfect for me. Can't wait.

Also, it's fun to think of which games might be retrospective patches to unlock the framerate etc. My mind's drawing a blank at the moment.
Uncharted 4. ND seems to always rerelease or patch their games with new platform features(Trophies, last of us remastered etc)

I wont buy one since my PC will still be way stronger than it and if the plans are the same for next gen then I wont buy a ps5 at launch either. I'll just wait for the upgraded one to come out.

I don't see the issue, as long as its a certification requirement that all games for PS4k also be tested and released on PS4.
